THE VALUE OF A SONG
I have always used songs in my Italian classes, but it hasn't been easy to find a song with a rich literarycontent and a melody that could appeal to most students. Many times I would find a song with a terrific, catchymelody but the words would be inappropriate to usein the classroom. Fortunately, I have discovered a verytalented Italian singer-composer whose songs I have usedquite successfully in my Italian classes. The song thatI have chosen for today's presentation is one that practicallyall of my students have enjoyed learning:
LA VITA MIA, by Amedeo Minghi
It has been my most successful one, and it has generatedmany rewarding and enriching learning activities.

Tr,

Cosa vola e it tempo volta it viso e poi
sembra gii Natale cosa vola
e adesso it camino a acceso.
e it tempo apre it mantello getta via i quademi e ci porta al mare
e it tempo lo soffia in alto e poi
quasi brucio nel sole e in me
Asdugala
questa e Ia mia prima lacrima d'amore
e it tempo toma indietro e mi da Ia mano sento it suo profumo
le caldarroste Ia pioggia era Ottobre era gia it primo amore
(videospettatori radioascohator)
to si e l'hai fatto con tutto it cuore

QUALCOSA DI LEI by AMEDEO MINCHI(Something of hers)

Siamo distratti noi.
QUALCOSA DI LEI(Something of hers)
Something of hersThere is something of hers, which she forgotand left behind, now it's mine,I don't believe she will returnto take it back,I don't think so.The magazines. a list of thingsto do and undobecause on it is written"better to forget",I believe referring to me.The little bottle of a certainperfume that is fading just like me,on which is written"Nuvole su di te",and it smells like a rose, but is no longer a rose. When she left, she left behind the eyeliner,a little bit,of lipstick,a broken watch anda handkerchief,I believe that deep downthey are signs of her spite, signs that say "you areno longer needed".
Then there is more:a little box with talcum powder, lily of the valley inebriating andwhite, which it is a thorn in my sidethat says "this is what you are, dust and nothing more".
Other things of hers:in a book, there is a leaf,
Translatedby Elizabeth Garcia
and a thought of farewell in a notethat says to me "you were my love",and then there is still more, the petticoat of the color of dawn, cottonballs, the hard candies that tastelike raspberries,a piece of transparent plasticsaved for when it rains...I hope it will not rainotherwise she will get wet...There is a little teddy bearmade of cloth, before it was sweetand now it despises me,there is a bit of silencebut the beat of my heart haunts, meit pounds for hours and hoursreflections of my sad love.
With all these images she says"you can't keep me any more".Oh, in short...The world is alone...And she didn't rememberthat I was left behind. We are all so forgetful.

THE ISLAND
translated by Jesse Mathen
I remember different roads from hereI remember voices that are no longer hereour youth was passing by quickly.Other youngsters were running awayand often never returned. And as a boy I cradled the ideathat liberty only meant going away, yet, they were flowers and thoughts born hereI could not destroy them, kill them in an istant like this. But my life is not an island, there is also need of me,I would liketo have libertyalso here. And liberty is not just an idea,I look with amazement at thosewho claim that it's already mine.I think of the youths that have left. And the whole world is a factory, and the men that talk cannot confound, nor conceal our freedom.
