On the OSSLT, you will be given a series of Multiple Choice Questions that have to do with a reading selection and grammatically correct sentences.

Reading selections can come in one of two ways:

1. Actual written text (information text, dialogue, news report, narrative)

2. Graphic text (map, diagram, charts, pictures)

• On the next several slides, you will see different examples of the types of multiple choice questions that appear on the sample online OSSLT.

• (I’m sure you already visited it this weekend, but just in case you didn’t, there’s still some time to visit the sample online OSSLT…)

• Be sure to take note of the important highlighted points that can help you when answering your multiple choice questions on the test.

This Section A: Reading has a series of multiple choice questions based on the same reading, so read through carefully. One thing to really consider and use are the tools that are provided for you. Let’s review those.

2Select the strikethrough tool to help eliminate wrong answers.

Don’t forget to select the right answer before you move on to the next question. Click on the right answer.

Strikethrough any wrong answers and a red squiggly strikethrough appears.

1Use the highlighter tool to help you with your reading to make note of important information.

Note the paragraph # you need to focus on and then find it in the reading.

Highlight the section in the reading that you need to answer your question.

This is what happens when you hide the incorrect ones. Now you just have to focus on the remaining ones to choose which answer is best.

Select the Answer Masking tool to help mask/hide the incorrect answers.

This tool has now blacked out other paragraphs while you’re reading so you can focus on finding the answer in paragraph 4.

Select the Line Reader tool to black out areas you do not need to focus on while reading.

Grammar Multiple Choice Questions – A Recap

These are the questions you may be asked when it comes to grammar:

a) Which sentence does not belong in the following paragraph?

b) Choose the option that best combines all the information in the following sentences.

c) Choose the sentence that is written correctly.

d) How should the sentence below be revised to make it correct?

e) Choose the best closing sentence for the following paragraph.

f) What revision is needed to improve the organization of this paragraph?

g) Which sentence is written correctly?

Graphic Texts

Don’t underestimate the graphic text reading selection!

Graphic texts present ideas and information using graphic features such as diagrams, photos, drawings, sketches, timetables, patterns, maps, charts, or tables.

The following two slides show you an example of a graphic text you will be required to read through and examine before you answer the multiple choice questions that follow.

Graphic texts need to be carefully examined before answer questions.

a) Read all titles, headings, captions.

b) Read labels and figure out how they’re connected to the graphic.

c) Follow all arrows and lines.

Graphic texts will have multiple choice questions to follow, so be sure to examine the graphic carefully!

Final Words

1) Get a good night’s rest on Wednesday night.

2) Ensure you know what time you are writing and what room you are writing in. Check the list in your

homeroom class. Lists will also be posted outside of the Learning Commons and the Cafeteria on

Wednesday.

3) Go to the bathroom and get a drink BEFORE you enter the room.

4) Read through all questions carefully.

5) If you are unsure of an answer, skip to the next question. When you “Review” at the end, make sure

to go back to any questions that were left unanswered.

6) Relax! Take deep breaths! Be calm!
