Psalm 103

Bless the LORD, O my soul, and all that is within me, bless his holy name. Bless the LORD, O my soul, and do not forget all his benefits— Who forgives all your iniquity, who heals all your diseases, Who redeems your life from the pit, who crowns you with steadfast love and mercy, Who satisfies you with good as long as you live, so that your youth is renewed like the eagle’s. Bless the LORD, O my soul, and all that is within me, bless his holy name.

AUSTRIAN HYMN

Glorious Things of Thee Are Spoken

God of all glory, on this first day you began creation, bringing light out of darkness. On this first day you began your new creation, raising Jesus Christ out of the darkness of death. On this Lord’s day, grant that we, the people you create by water and the Spirit, may be joined with all your works in praising you for your great glory. Through Jesus Christ, in union with the Holy Spirit, we praise you now and forever. Amen.

Apostles’ Creed

I believe in God, the Father almighty, creator of heaven and earth. I believe in Jesus Christ, God’s only Son, our Lord, who was conceived by the Holy Spirit, born of the virgin Mary, suffered under Pontius Pilate, was crucified, died, and was buried. He descended to the dead. On the third day, he rose again. He ascended into heaven, he is seated at the right hand of the Father. and he will come to judge the living and the dead. I believe in the Holy Spirit, the holy catholic church, the communion of saints, the forgiveness of sins, the resurrection of the body, and the life everlasting. Amen.

Sunday, September 8, 9:00 AM Everyone is invited to the congregational kick-off to bounce back into church fall activities. Join us on the front lawn for an ice cream truck, baked goods, bounce house, face painting and tattoos. Children will meet their Sunday School teachers and briefly visit their classroom before 10:15 AM worship service.

Sundays, beginning September 8, 9:00 AM, Fireside Room This fall we are shining the spotlight on some of our congrega-tion’s mission partners. We will feature guest speakers from thir-teen different organizations and ministries that Central supports with our mission giving and our volunteer service. Our guests will share stories and videos, engage us in conversation, inspire us, and let us know how we can get even more involved. It’s a great opportunity to learn how we are together making a big difference in Des Moines and around the world, addressing issues of hunger, poverty, homelessness, mental health, education, immigration, and interfaith relationships. Next month’s schedule: September 8 U.S. Committee for Refugees and Immigrants Laura Thako September 15 AMOS (A Mid-Iowa Organizing Strategy) Paul Turner September 22 Everybody Wins! Iowa Karen Ligas & Amber Juffer September 29 Des Moines Area Religious Council Sarah Trone Garriott

Wednesdays, 7:30 PM, Room 208 Hear Ye! Hear Ye! Chancel Choir rehearsals are now underway. We would love to welcome new members. We have added several people to the group and hope that additional singers will join us. Hope to see you this fall.

Rehearsals begin Thursday, September 12, 8:45–9:45 AM Can you read music? Have you ever wanted to ring out your joy for God? Here are three benefits you’ll gain from participating in the Morgen Bells:

1. Belonging to a warm fellowship which meets weekly; 2. Making beautiful handbell music with others; 3. Enhancing Central’s worship experience.

Newcomers are welcome. The addition of seven new bells will need more hands to ring them. Questions? Call Director Sue Hudson at 515-278-1966, to learn how you can help ring out in song!

Saturday, September 7, 8:00 AM to 4:00 PM 15 volunteers from Central are needed to help with a home build in Des Moines, working alongside a partner family. Assistance is also needed with preparing and serving lunch. No experience nec-essary. To volunteer, contact Todd Mattison at 515-201-0474 or [email protected].

Begins Wednesday, September 11, 6:30 PM, 39th Street Lobby Knitters are beginning their new year of yarning. Gather in the 39th Street Lobby and meet every other Wednesday through May 2020. Bring your knit-packs, which would include your favorite utensils, and knitters will have a blessing of the needles in anticipation of the pro-jects they will be called upon to provide. If you need a project, remem-ber, there is a fine selection of yarn, bundled together to make one adult shawl per bag. If you need a ride to knitting, please contact Sandy Dahl, at 515-306-0779.

Training: Tuesday, September 10, 6:00 PM, Fellowship Hall We are in need of caring adults to serve as mentors for our church’s Tuesday evening Power Read program this fall. No special skills are needed… just a kind heart and a desire to make a differ-ence in the life of a child. To volunteer as a mentor, please go to the website everybodywinsiowa.org and click on the “Volunteer” tab at the top. You will then be contacted for a background check. After that, you will be all set for a brief training on September 10. The program begins the following week, on September 17, at 5:30 PM. We also need volunteers to help in other ways: prepar-ing meals, leading recreation, and supervising older students who are doing homework. To volunteer in one of these ways, or for more information, please contact Jean Hamilton, at [email protected] or 515-282-2638.

Friday & Saturday, December 6 & 7 Central Presbyterian Church members who would like to have a vendor booth at the 2019 Holiday Market, should apply now. To register as a vendor, go to: https://dmcpc.org/holiday-market/, use the easy online form or download and print a form to com-plete and send in with your payment by September 1, to hold your spot. If you’d like to get involved this year in the Holiday Market planning or experience, please contact Connie Boesen at [email protected] or 515-240-7929. The Holiday Market is free and open to the public.
