Sharing The Tradition ‘Those whose sins you forgive,
they are forgiven. Those whose sins you shall retain,
they are retained.’ Jesus’ disci-ples are to continue the work
of reconciling all people to God. His power to forgive sins
is conferred on the Church. Through baptism, God’s for-
giveness becomes available to us, but human beings do not lose their tendency to sin just because they are baptised.
The sacrament of Reconcilia-tion is there to assist the faith-ful to acknowledge human sin-
fulness and seek the for-giveness and reconciliation of
God.
Did You Know In Aramaic, the language spo-
ken by Jesus, the name of Thomas means ‘twin’.

PARISH NOTICES
First Spiritual Exercises From Monday 23 April to Saturday 19 May Fr Cathal Doherty will lead a re-treat in our parish. Fr Cathal is an Irish Jesuit who teaches in California. The retreat is a way of developing our rela-tionship with God. This is an excellent form of retreat for busy people, since it links prayer with our experiences and helps us to recognise the presence of the Lord in a variety of happenings. Your prayer is done alone, at home or in some quiet place, at a time conven-ient to you. Brochures in the foyer.
Project Compassion Thank you to everyone who has
contributed to Project Compassion this year. It is a Lenten project of
sharing our concern and money for poorer peoples in our world.

Dear Friends
This week we celebrate Divine Mercy Sunday, or Second
Sunday of Easter. Pope John Paul II initiated this celebration
of Divine Mercy in light of Christ’s Resurrection. It is as if
Jesus appeals to each of us: “Fear not”, I died on the Cross,
but I am alive for evermore! “I am the first and the Last, and
the living One!”.
In the celebration of Easter we recognise the work of God,
whose “mercy endures for ever”. Jesus shows to the disciples
his hands and his side which bears the marks of the Passion. He breathed
on them and said, “those whose sins you forgive are forgiven”. We recognise
the gift of God’s forgiveness given to the church.
St Faustina Kowalska saw coming from his heart which overflows with love
for humanity two rays of light. “The two rays”, according to what Jesus told
her, “represent the blood and the water” (Dairy, 132). The gift of God’s mercy
is given to us in the sacraments of Baptism, the Eucharist and Reconciliation.
One of the prayers of Divine Mercy is: ‘Eternal Father, I offer You the Body and
Blood, Soul and Divinity of Your dearly beloved Son, Our Lord Jesus Christ, in
atonement for our sins and those of the whole world.’
It might be a good to spend some time in prayer asking for God’s mercy for
our world, and for a greater trust in his Love.
God bless, Fr John Herd
