Pastor’s Corner
My Dear Friends,
I hope your summer is going well.
I’m using this time to work on
editing books of homilies and
journals.
Norberto Bautista has returned to
his seminary in Miami to begin
his 2nd year of a 9-year course of study to become a priest. We
loved having him here for the summer, and we look forward to his
next visit. Norberto is studying to become a Piarist Father. The
Piarists, founded by St. Joseph Calasanz, specialize in working
with poor youth. Currently that Order has missions in 32 nations.
David Miller of our parish is getting ready to enter St. John XXIII
National Seminary in Weston, MA in August. David will be
studying for the Diocese of Raleigh. Council 1074 of the Knights
of Columbus is hosting a farewell reception for David after the 11
a.m. Mass on Sunday, August 3rd. Everyone is invited to drop by
to wish David a fond farewell.
We are looking for some new Camillus Ministers to bring Holy
Communion to the sick. One branch of this ministry serves
Catholic patients at NHRMC and Lower Cape Fear Hospice, while
the other branch serves 16 nursing homes and private homes. If
you are interested in exploring this exciting and very rewarding
ministry, please call the parish office.
In the past month, St. Mary campus was buzzing with filming of
the movie “The Longest Ride” and the television series “Sleepy
Hollow.” Now, a new television series called “Secrets and Lies”
will be filming at the Basilica Shrine of St. Mary. This new series
has been picked up by ABC. At least one of the people working on
this series worked on “Sister Act.” He said our church is much
prettier than the one they used in San Francisco!
Please remember that the St. Mary-Tileston Social Outreach
Ministry will be closed from July 31st and to September 7th. It will
re-open on September 8th.
Finally, there is still time to register your children at St. Mary
Catholic School. Please call the school office at 910-762-5491 x
140.
Sincerely yours in Christ,
Father Bob Readings for the Week of July 20

Parish Happenings
“A Stitch….A Prayer….The Touch of God” Our Prayer Shawl ministry offers warmth and the mes-sage of God’s blessings to those in need of comfort. Members of this ministry knit and crochet special shawls and blankets that receive a pastoral blessing. These hand-made items are made available to anyone experi-encing a physical or emotional crisis. Some Prayer
Shawl Ministry members do their knitting and crocheting at regular meetings (10:00am on the 2nd & 4th Tuesdays each month) others prefer to work exclusive-ly from home. Call Noreen at 798-0055 for more information on this wonderful ministry. If you know of anyone who needs the warmth and comfort of a prayer shawl, call Noreen and she will make arrangements to get one to you. Again, you or the recipient need not be a member of our congregation.
Eucharistic Ministers and Lectors are needed for all
masses. If interested in joining this ministry, please
contact Stephanie Watts at: 799-7623 or

Sixteenth Sunday in Ordinary Time Basilica Shrine of Saint Mary – July 19 and July 20, 2014 6
Sixteenth Sunday in Ordinary Time— Sister Isaac
Here at the Outreach I have a sign that was given to me that reads: Too
blessed to be stressed. Believe me when I say that the message helps me
and many others during the day. As we pray Psalm 86 during Mass this
weekend, we can be comforted:
You, O Lord, are a God
merciful and gracious,
slow to anger, abounding
in kindness and fidelity.
Turn toward me,
and have pity on me;
give your strength
to your servant.
During the summer we make an effort to slow down a bit. Imitating God
by being slow to anger over the many things that beset us during the day is
a challenge. The Parables that are proclaimed today can also help. Seeds
and yeast are very small, tiny items, yet when given the proper care and
conditions they result in wonderful things. Let us imitate our God by being
good and forgiving in all our activities during this coming week.

NC Catholics July/August issue available online
The July/August 2014 issue of NC Catholics is now available online.
The cover story, “Our Newest Priest,” tells how Father Michael Burbeck,
ordained June 7, “fell in love,” first with the Catholic Church and then
with a call to the Priesthood. The feature is full of photos from the ordi-
nation. In his column, “’Reunion and Renewal,” Bishop Burbidge re-
flects on the 30th reunion of his ordination class. “We all have one thing
in common,” the Bishop writes of his class, “a conviction that God has a
divine plan for each one of us, and that the One who sends always pro-
vides the strength necessary to carry out the task.” This issue’s Parish
Ministry Profile highlights the parish secretary, and focuses on Mrs.
Vivian Branch, who recently retired after 40 years as parish secretary at
Saint Peter in Greenville.

Mom loses her job, and with it, the income that was paying school tuition.
A marriage falls apart and a parent walks away, leav-ing the family destitute.
Grandma breaks her hip and has to move in with the family.
We all have our bumps in the road, but once in awhile, a St. Mary School family experiences a Random Act of Misfor-tune that suddenly wipes out a child’s chance to continue a Catholic education. In one recent spectacular Random Act of Kindness, an anonymous donor stepped forward to fund a child’s entire tuition for a year when the student’s family suddenly couldn’t pay.
St. Mary School offers tuition assistance, but we have no endowment upon which to draw and no reserve fund for helping family emergencies.
Would you consider making a gift – a Random Act of Kind-ness – to lend a hand when a student’s family simply can’t make it financially and must drop out of St. Mary School? Any amount would help us to help a child in a misfortunate situation. $100 will buy a school uniform for a child who can’t
afford it. $400 will pay for a child’s registration and materials
fee. $5,210 will pay for a full year of tuition for a Catholic
child.
All gifts to St. Mary School are tax deductible as allowed under the IRS code 501(c)3. Gifts will be used at the Prin-cipal’s discretion, but if you wish, gifts of $1,000 or more may be designated for specific purposes and will be used in that way if possible. All gifts will be considered anony-mous, but will be acknowledged with a tax receipt.
Please prayerfully consider doing a Random Act of Kind-ness to assist a Catholic family in need continue with the rich blessing of a Catholic education. Please mail a check or drop an envelope in the collection basket addressed to:
St. Mary Catholic School c/o Mrs. Joyce Price, Principal
217 S. 4th St. Wilmington, NC 28401
Many thanks in advance for your kindness, compassion, and generosity.
Double your giving!
