Foodies around the countryrejoice when blue crabs areavailable. But in Charles County, they’re plentiful from Aprilthrough October.

The blue crab is rightly knownfor its sweet, juicy meat, and thewaters around La Plata are full of them. Usually served steamed, they’re dipped in everything frombutter to vinegar and Old Bayseasoning. Locals often spend aday crabbing on the waterfront,

then haul home supper. Someothers also choose to have theirwork done for them, at least thecollecting and cooking part.

Other local treats includerockfish, shrimp and scallops.Best of all, what’s on the menuat lunch or dinner was probablyswimming around that morning.“Catch of the day” really meanssomething in Charles County.

STuFFED ham

If seafood isn’t your first choice,Southern Maryland has a uniquespecialty waiting for your taste

buds. It’s stuffed ham, a dish thatgraces many tables for holidaysand other special occasions witha recipe often handed downthrough generations.

Here’s how it works: A cornedham is soaked or injected withbrine, removed from its bone andstuffed with cabbage, kale andspices. The exact spices, as wellas the ratio of other ingredients, are a closely guarded secret with

most cooks. There are plenty of recipes around if you want to tryto your own, but a faster andeasier way is to seek out a localexpert, such as Nick’s of Clinton,a deli and market in Waldorf, which has them all cooked upand ready to go.

Founded in 1658, Charles Countyhas several historic sites standingtoday that testify to its longevity.

“One of the neatest sites is the[1819] Port Tobacco Courthouse,”says Wayne Winkler, a La Platatown councilman and lifelongresident. “Years ago, Port Tobaccowas the commerce center andthe county seat. It was where all

the farmers brought their tobaccoto be shipped overseas.”

An 1892 fire destroyed themain wing of the courthouse, andthe county seat was moved to LaPlata. The Port Tobacco Courthouseis now a museum containingtobacco, archeological and CivilWar exhibits.

St. Ignatius Church, built in1798, is one of the oldest continuallyoperating Catholic churches inthe nation.

Charles County’s rich history includes wars, fires, tobacco, gambling and two significanttornadoes, but the thing that draws newcomers

to this community near Washington, D.C., is itspeople – and their unfailing ability to turn adversityinto opportunity.

of family life that our

fully embraced. But

Charles County has animportant legacy, and

In the 1950s and ‘60s, CharlesCounty became known forgambling. Route 301 from Waldorf to the Potomac River Bridge wasknown as “Little Vegas” or “SlotMachine Alley” and actuallyoutpaced slot revenues in LasVegas at the time.

“Charles County was

booming,” Winkler recalls. “Wehad fancy restaurants and lots of entertainment. Country and bluessingers like Fats Domino starredin Waldorf clubs. Highway 301 ranfrom Maine to Florida, and manypeople stopped, ate, played andspent the night. It was a great timeto live here.”

But by 1968, Charles County’sgambling era was over.

socioeconomic impact it hadwith unfavorable influences from

outside the county,” says PhilMcDonagh, production managerat SunTrust Mortgage Inc. anda lifelong resident of CharlesCounty. “It wasn’t like the highlyregulated, state-sponsoredgambling that exists today.”

Like Winkler, McDonaghhas seen the county evolveinto a diverse and progressivebedroom community.

“We have nearly 148,000

residents now, as opposed to onlyaround 21,000 back in the 1940census,” McDonagh says. “We’vetransitioned from an agrariancommunity to a suburb thatsupports the Washington, D.C.,business sector.”

Despite all that’s changed,Charles County remains connectedto its heritage through preservationof historic sites and keepingstories alive among generations.

“People today are so consumedby their work and the demands of family life that our history isn’t

important legacy, and folks continueto move here because it’s such awonderful place.”

There are tales of tenacity fromfar more recent history, too.

If you’d have visited downtownLa Plata on the afternoon of April28, 2012, you’d have witnessed 700local residents dancing the Twistin front of Town Hall. It wasn’t thecase of a town gone haywire – itwas part of a larger celebration of how far La Plata has come in thepast decade since an F4 tornadonearly devastated the town.

While the tornado ruined manyof the town’s homes and buildings,it did nothing to dampen thetown’s spirit. A new Town Hallreplaced the damaged one, becoming Southern Maryland’sfirst LEED-certified building. And local businesses such asFacchina Construction Co.supported their neighbors.

“In many ways, Facchina keptLa Plata alive,” Winkler says.

“Facchina bought trailers forbusinesses that were destroyed tomove into, and they didn’t have topay rent for the first year if theycouldn’t afford to. We also hadstate and federal grant money torebuild streets and sidewalks, and businesses were givenaround $25,000 to build biggerand better.”

“We wanted to show that in thiseconomy, there are some largeorganizations that are really keepingour county going by keeping peopleemployed,” says Darlene Breck of theSouthern Maryland Business Center, whoserved on the luncheon committee. “Everyone of those employees turns around andputs their money right back into our

The numbers were surprising to somecommittee members, because it’s easy tooverlook the economic impact thataccompanies the necessary servicesprovided by some of these employers.

“You don’t think of your local hospitalas employing so many people, but they

do,” Breck says. “Not only are they ouronly hospital, but they also provide a lot of  jobs. It’s just interesting how some of theseorganizations are doing great things forthe community, keeping us healthy, keepingus safe, educating our children, but they’realso providing jobs.”

For instance, the county’s largestemployer, Charles County Public Schools, employs 3,430 people as well as severalthousand more part-time or temporaryworkers, says James Richmond, superintendent of schools.

Craig Renner is bringing back

the Charles County Chamber of Commerce Trade Expo in 2013.“Charles County is a community

of businesses with a wide varietyof products and services, so alocal trade expo is fundamentalin promoting local trade andcommerce,” says Renner, whobegan his one-year term as CharlesCounty Chamber of Commercepresident on January 1, 2013.

Renner says his goal as presidentin 2013 might sound cliché, butit is to provide value for being aChamber member.

“For example, I met in October2012 with people at the College of Southern Maryland to develop aseries of programs and seminarsthat will help our members on a

variety of business-related subjects,

with the seminars being free or at avery reduced cost,” he says. The seminars are available

solely to members, althoughsessions will be open to businessowners as well as their employees.

Renner is also working on aVeterans Outreach Program, withplans to increase job opportunitiesfor area military veterans.

“Some of the veterans areacademically skilled, and ourOutreach Program is looking intowhat types of additional programsneed to be developed to matchthese military veterans withmember businesses throughoutCharles County.”

Another initiative that Renner

has been planning is a YouthEntrepreneurship Program, inwhich high school and middleschool students visit areabusinesses to learn what it takesto be good business ownersand employees.

“Charles County is a great placeto do business – we rank 11th forcounties in the United States inper capita income,” he says. “Thiscommunity has good health care,a new high school opening in 2014,plenty of sports and recreation, and dozens of other positives thatamplify the brightness of ourfuture. It’s an especially good timeto be a member of the CharlesCounty Chamber of Commerce.”
