AlunAgeorgeLondon duo AlunaGeorge, AKA vocalist Aluna Francis and producer George Reid, have made quite the impact on the UK music scene over the last 12 months with the success of their ‘You Know You Like It EP’ and radio conquering single ‘Your Drums Your Love’ not to mention dancefloor hit ‘White Noise’ alongside Disclosure.

Taking in influences from UK glitch and bass culture and sample based production with futuristic R&B sheen and British pop sensibilities, AlunaGeorge are on the path to heady chart heights, winning the accolades of everyone from the NME and The Guardian to Pitchfork and Spin along the way.

DArwin DeezIn 2009 Darwin Deez burst onto the scene with the inimitable pop smash ‘Radar Detector’. Fast forward to 2013 and Darwin is set to unleash his sensational sophomore LP ‘Songs for Imaginative People’, having holed up for months in Carolina, away from the distractions of his hometown, New York City.Singularly a brilliant, hilarious, complex, entertaining individual, Darwin Deez writes songs that will make you want to bust out your dancing shoes while also cutting to that raw, emotional nerve. Don’t miss your chance to witness a rare insight into everything a pop star should be.

everything everythingEverything Everything are a band on the rise. Having just simultaneously conquered the UK charts with single Cough Cough and second album, Arc, they look like they are set for great things. The Manchester four piece, fronted by the unmistakable falsetto of frontman/orchestrater Jonathan Higgs, weave intricate guitar and synth lines around pounding hip hop inspired beats, topped off by beautifully poised four part harmonies.

With a huge Academy tour of the UK planned for the Autumn, make sure you’re down the front for hits MY KZ YR BF, Cough Cough and Kemosable before these guys go truly stratospheric.

lAurA MvulADescribed as “The voice of 2013” by The Evening Standard, this classically trained, singer-songwriter’s music fuses orchestral soul with velvety harmonies and emotional vocals giving nods to Nina Simone, George Gershwin and Björk amongst others.

A graduate from the Birmingham Conservatoire with a degree in composition, the 26-year-old is a unique collision of her Caribbean background and formal music.

As one of the most exciting new musical talents to come out of the UK, this young lady deserves every bit of attention that she gets. As Clash magazine say, “Beautiful in voice and soul, lift your eyes skyward and watch this girl soar”.

little CoMetsFamed for their impromptu gigs in unorthodox venues, North East four-piece Little Comets’ blend of tricky percussive rhythms and Afro-beat-tinged guitars has seen them labeled as the British Vampire Weekend. Hailing from Sunderland and Newcastle, brothers Robert (lead vocals, guitar) and Michael (lead guitar) Coles and bassist Matt Hall formed the band in 2008. Having been described as kitchen sink indie these boys have sold out The Cockpit on numerous occasions as well as garnering acclaim over hotly tipped albums, In Search Of Elusive and Life Is Everywhere.

PeACeIt’s been quite a year for B-Town (and the UK’s) indie rock saviours, Peace. These four lads from the Midlands come on with the kind of swagger that would make the biggest Brit Pop artists of the 90s quake in their boots. Their profi le has risen and risen in the last few months, being in the pages of every music magazine going, garnering Radio 1 day time playlisting and earning themselves a coveted spot on the NME New Music Tour alongside fellow indie revivalists Palma Violets. They return to Live At Leeds for a second year with a huge pedigree behind them!

ruDiMentAlRudimental are the chart conquering drum and bass, dance outfit who have been responsible for some of the biggest hits of the last 12 months including the unstoppable ‘Feel The Love’ and ‘Not Giving In’ both featuring the vocal stylings of John Newman. As well as scoring themselves number 1 records and being all over the radio, the Hackney quartet secured themselves a coveted spot on BBC TV in 2012 perfoming live on Later With Jools Holland. We welcome Rudimental to Leeds for what will be an unforgetable performance, no less, as two of them attended Leeds Met Uni!

sAvAgesAfter a debut show opening up for British Sea Power in Brighton in 2012, Savages soon became the talk of the town. With hype from all quarters including The NME, The Guardian and Radio 1 and a high profile performance on Jools Holland, 2012’s rip roaring single ‘Husbands’ aptly demonstrated why such a fuss has been made over these girls, evoking Birthday Party-era Nick Cave, the Pop Group circa Y, the ragged speed of Killing Joke, Mission of Burma’s way with distortion, and the Slits’ predilection for dub. A pretty uncompromising list of comparisons!

swiM DeePSwim Deep are at the forefront of a handful of bands flying the flag for Birmingham amongst Britain’s new guitar hopefuls. Front by the mercurial Austin Williams and having sold out venues up and down the country on their own headline tour earlier in 2013, these guys are about to blow up. Having been described as beach grunge, this quartet generate the kind of skewed summer vibes that could be compared to MGMT covering What’s The Story Morning Glory. Huge choruses, catchy riffs and a wardrobe full of slacker stylings. Not to be missed.

the 1975Manchester indie poppers The 1975 have gradually been turning themselves into one of the best bands in the UK. Sell out shows up and down the country and undeniable indie hits in the form of songs ‘Sex’ and ‘Chocolate’, they specialise in shimmering Maccabees-esque guitars winding themselves around pounding beats and hugely catchy choruses. Anyone who managed to get their hands on a ticket for one of their 2 sell out Cockpit shows either side of new year know that these guys are going to be massive.

the Pigeon DeteCtivesReturning to their hometown of Leeds for what guarantees to be a very special show, local heroes The Pigeon Detectives, are set to blow the roof off the O2 Academy when they open it up at this years Live At Leeds. With the eagerly anticipated release of their 4th album, We Met At Sea, recorded on home turf at Leeds’ Cottage Road Studios, along with the imminent arrival of rip roaring lead single, I Won’t Come Back, the boys are ready to reclaim their spot at the top of the indie league table.

the stAves2012 was a breakthrough year for The Staves. Their debut album received near faultless reviews from the British media, and following a series of US, European and UK tours with Bon Iver, and a recent sold-out tour of the UK in their own right, the three sisters have rightly begun to reap the rewards of their relentless years of hefty touring.

The Staves’ songwriting is as striking as it is exquisite, a melding of still, bright English folk and sublime West Coast pop that, performed live, is capable of plunging an audience into awed silence.

the wAlkMenThe Walkmen are the great under rated New York band of their generation, and in their latest, hugely acclaimed record, Heaven, they have delivered their third killer album in a row. Having broken through in the early 00s with indie classic ‘The Rat’, they are now making the best music of their career and fi lling their largest venues yet. The last few months have seen them go from cult band to festival headliner, proving their worth with an incredible performance at The National curated Crossing Brooklyn Ferry Festival. The Walkmen are a once in a generation band and should not be missed.

tribesWhen you’ve clawed your way - secret gig by word-of-mouth demo-swap by rooftop video shoot - out of the North London underground rock scene, survived homelessness and recording your debut album while living in a van in the car park of a Liverpool studio, seen that album hit the Top Twenty and garner impressive Album Of The Year rankings and sell out Shepherd’s Bush Empire, how would you celebrate? Easy. You’d hire a huge house in the Malibu hills while recording your highly anticipated second album ‘Wish To Scream’ in LA, record all day, party some nights and surf at dawn.

Charlie Boyer and The Voyeurs are one of the most hotly tipped bands around. Alongside the likes of Temples and TOY they create swirling 60s influenced sounds, destined for big things!

ChinA rAts China Rats are a four piece rock ‘n’ roll band from Leeds, inspired by a love of punk’s riotous guitars, 50’s pop and classic British guitar bands.

Chloe howl At just 17 years old Chloe Howl has made quite the impression with her single ‘No Strings’ on which she vocally takes off from where Lily Allen left, playfully chanting over throbbing dance synths.

DAn Croll LIPA graduate Dan Croll makes the kind of infectious pop music that you can’t help but get up and move to. Like MGMT, Paul Simon and Prince jamming everything they have into perfect 3 minute pop songs.

DAnCing yeArs Piano-driven folk with complexly instrumented, lyrically imaginative songs built up with delicate but powerful vocals that move you to tranquil jubilation. With melodies that are stirring, melancholy and pristine.

Keen eyes may recognise Department M as the new project of Grammatics mainman Owen Brinley. Department M produces visceral, synth laden electronic pop, with Owen’s unmistakeable croon fl oating over the top.Duologue

Bonding over a mixture of the best in electronica and guitar-based music, Duologue has fused this eclecticism into a truly inimitable sound of their own.

FAwn sPotsYork noise rockers Fawn Spots have been going from strength to strength of late. Their raucous No Age sounding noise has seen them tour the states and be tipped by every blog worth its salt.

Filthy boy19 year old South London indie rockers Filthy Boy blend strange storytelling with big chunks of macabre yet catchy guitar music, having recently been NME’s Track Of The Day they are going to go far.

on An on With their latest single ‘Hunter’ On An On have stumbled onto something quite special. Huge, arms a loft choruses soaring over fuzzy guitars and a chunky synth riff.

Live At Leeds The Unconference takes place on Friday 3rd May at Leeds College Of Music, returning for a 4th year. Curated once again by whiskas (¡Forward, Russia!, Dance To The Radio, IMGNTN) and supported by Leeds Metropolitan University, the focus this year will be around networking and the landscape of music consumption in the digital landscape.

For the former, we are working with organisations such as Music Industry Yorkshire & Blacks Solicitors to host networking events alongside our traditional panels. Our panels will again be welcoming a range of guests including The Orchard, Wichita Management, Pitchfork, Jon Gomm, Hope & Social and more.

The day, will, as always, end with our customary

and successful demo panel where we ask bands/artists to submit music to be discussed by our panel of experts, giving practical advice on recording, releasing and getting exposure for your music. In previous years, bands have attracted the attention from managers, labels and journalists as well as from other attendees and acts at The Unconference. To submit your music to the panel send a link and some background information to [email protected] with the subject: LISTENING PANEL

The Unconference opens at 10am and is free to attend, but you need to register in advance online via the Live At Leeds website. The full programme will be available online from www.liveatleeds.com nearer the time.

Black Moth + Wet Nuns + Bearfoot Beware Doors 7pm / Entry: free to attendees of The Unconference and Live At Leeds ticket holders. Otherwise £5 on the door.

Black Moth formed out of the ashes of a Leeds-based garage rock band, seduced by the brutal and hypnotic lure of the riff, to emerge translucent skinned and bleary eyed from their cocoon as the ferocious kick-ass heavy rock outfi t that is Black Moth.

Apparently the success of Wet Nuns is down to a unique combination of ‘women, death, beards, skulls and whiskey’. It’s the magic formula for a lo-fi blues punk sound that has been tearing doors from gig venues across the UK.

The Yorkshire duo kick up an amazing sound. It’s Black

Keys with a deep, deep growl - the riffs are enormous, the drumming is monstrous and the hardcore vocals are the knockout blow.

Experimental, scrappy, but with an accessible underbelly, Bearfoot Beware are an alt-rock power trio from Leeds. This year has seen the gentlemen release their sophomore EP BASS LANE (pronounced like - but not to be confused with; the fi sh), performing alongside the likes of Johnny Foreigner, Tellison and Two Door Cinema Club in the process.

While they might have only started their live adventure, they have already got people tipping them as “ones to watch”.

drummer Tom Webster, pianist Jack Mattison and bassist Louis Appleyard, Carnabells fell upon a sound with its heart and soul in traditional rock n roll with the rip-roaring energy of northern guitar music.

Grace With Tea LeavesLed by the small girl with the big voice, Grace Richardon, the Leeds-based band mix a homemade brew of jazzy power melodies, complex experimental rhythms and absorbing harmonies, which combine to create something distinctive to your ears.

Myfanwy ShieldsDespite having no connection to Wales her parents still decided to call her Myfanwy, this has had no lasting damage to her music. Myfanwy’s debut EP ‘Festival’ is fist of fun that sees her move away from her acoustic roots to a big pop sound drawing influence from the likes of Graceland

era Paul Simon and Blondie that tells teenage tales of boys, girls and nights in The Cockpit.

This LegionIn the past two year This Legion have gained an army of fans with their no-nonsense, Northern indie tunes. Drawing influence from classic guitar bands they sing songs of nights out, nights, triumph and heartache, all done whith bane coats and quiffs!

We Be HappyAfter a year playing each others music Francesca & Alex finally bit the bullet and formed an actual band. The immediate results have been startling, leaving audiences stunned. This is perfect union of her innate ability for melody and his for taking the book and throwing it out of the window. While they describe themselves as “acoustic pop” it’s much, much more that that.
