The event was run by the Instute for Democracy and Human Rights and being of Buddhist background myself, you could only imagine how excited I was for this event. The theme of the lecture revolved around the impor- tance of educaon, and why it maers to so many young people around the world. Although this concept might seem prey straight forward, it doesn’t mean that I wasn’t eager to see what the Dalai Lama had to say about the maer. For approximately an hour, the Dalai Lama explored quesons such as: what is the purpose of educaon? Is it a privilege or a responsibility? Does educaon make us wise, compassionate, and socially intelligent? Does it provide us with a sense of purpose, contentment and happiness? On behalf of all of the students that accompanied me, I feel privileged to have shared this experience and I would definitely not hesitate to visit His Holiness, the 14th Dalai Lama, again. One of the key changes is that schools will be funded according to the data we hold on families. We collect this data when boys enrol with us, but we know that over me situaons change. These changes will have an impact on the amount we are funded as a school, so it is very important that our data is accurate. There is a survey with the newsleer for every family to complete and return to school so we can ensure that our data is correct. College Students meet the Dalai Lama

A select few students were invited to attend the York Theatre on the 13th of June, to watch a lecture by His Holiness, the 14th Dalai Lama. Year 7 Students using ipads

During Term 2 in English, Year 7 has learnt about many fun, amazing and educational ICT tools. We read a great novel called The French Confection and used var-ious iPad apps and websites to further our understand-ing of the story.

Our class, 7P, used the GoAnimate website to cre-ate a short interview. This allowed us to express our thoughts and feelings about the book through an ani-mation sequence. We also joined Edmodo, which ena-bled us to send messages to each other, post links to our videos and communicate with our teachers.

Ms. Au and Ms. Arapi also taught us how to complete activities using different iPad apps. Using the “Story-board 3D” app, we were able to create storyboards of different sections of the book as if though it was part of a movie. We had to customise the character’s facial expressions, the setting, the props etc. All the different groups came up with creative dialogue for the charac-ters and look forward to acting the scenes out. We will be filming our movies and editing them by the end of the term.

It has been a great experience using the iPads in our English class.

1. Why did you become a teacher?I finished a Journalism Degree and decided that I want-ed to continue studying and an Education Degree ap-peared to be a good option. I have always loved read-ing and writing so I knew that English teaching would be something I would enjoy. Also, I had a great English Teacher when I was at high school, so he inspired me to also consider teaching as a profession.

2. How long have you been teaching at LBHS?I first started teaching at LBHS in 2006. In 2007 I left Australia to live in Europe and when I returned in 2008, I came back to LBHS.

3. What’s one thing you like to do outside of school?I love anything to do with food. I especially enjoy going to fancy restaurants with my friends and family. I also enjoy cooking yummy meals at home.

4. If you could do another job instead of teaching what would it be?I have always been interested in travel, so perhaps a travel writer or reporter.

5. Where do you see yourself in 10 years? I’m not sure! I might still be at LBHS teaching or I could be travelling the world and visiting my favourite coun-tries, anything is possible.

6. What is it you like about teaching?I love that each day is completely different from the last. Empowering students to reach their potential is very satisfying.

7. What’s one thing you have learnt from being a teacher?Patience, patience, patience!

8. What would you prefer, to read a book or watch a movie? Definitely a book. A book is always much more memo-rable than a movie.

Music News

Year 7 Musical Instrument Display:

Some very talented Year 7 students currently have their own musical instruments on display in the front foyer. As part of their assessment, students were required to design and build their own instruments. There were some highly creative and extraordinarily well-made gui-tars, drums and xylophones. Congratulations to all the Year 7 Music students for their fantastic efforts.

Year 9 ‘Aussie Rock’ Excursion:

Last term, Year 9 Music students had the opportunity to attend ‘The Best of Aussie Rock’ concert, performed by students from The Australian Institute of Music. They showcased songs by famous bands such as INXS, Cold Chisel and ACDC. There was also a guest appearance by the legendary lead singer of Little River band, Glenn Shorrick, who sang a few of his well-known hits. Excur-sions to the Australian Institute of Music are a great way to teach the students not only about different musical styles, but also to show them what a career in Music might look like.

Community News

Last term, our parents visited Bicentennial Park, Home-bush, for a picnic with our feeder Primary Schools. The picnic provided a welcoming opportunity for our parents to share experiences and give advice regard-ing school and community life. “It was a fantastic day and the parents really enjoyed establishing links with the feeder primary schools,” said Latifa Zuhbi, CLO. Chil-dren had fun playing games, some parents had a go at bike riding, while others enjoyed a relaxing stroll along-side the lake.

Our parents also had a very worthwhile opportunity last term to visit the University of Sydney. As part of the Compass Program initiative, parents from the South Western Sydney region were invited to the University for a campus visit. The program included a campus tour, key talks on university life, pathways to university, sup-port services and costs and finance. “Parents thorough-ly enjoyed visiting the university grounds and seeking information regarding the possibility of their son going to university,” says Latifa Zuhbi, CLO.

Hospitality Students serve an Italian Feast

On June 13th, Year 8 Italian classes enjoyed a delicious four course Italian meal prepared and served by Ms Field’s College Hospitality class. This cross-curriculum activity enabled the Hospitality boys who have been studying the topic “Food and Beverages” to display their excel-lent service skills in a restaurant setting and assist with menu planning and cooking. The Year 8 Italian students had the opportunity to practise their Italian expressions learned as part of their topic “Food and Drink in Italy”. A wonderful day was had by all and the boys are to be congratulated for their exceptional manners on the day.
