feasts of the LORD which you shall proclaim as holy convocations, my

Leviticus 23:39 "On the fifteenth day of the seventh month, when you have gathered in the produce of the land, you shall keep the feast of

the LORD seven days; on the first day shall be a solemn rest, and on the eighth day shall be a solemn rest. 40 And you shall take on the first day the fruit of goodly trees, branches of palm trees, and boughs of leafy trees, and willows of

the brook; and you shall rejoice before the LORD your God seven days. 41 You shall keep it as a feast to the LORD seven days in the year; it is a statute for ever throughout your generations; you

Isaiah 12:1 You will say in that day: "I will give thanks to thee, O LORD, for though thou wast angry

with me, thy anger turned away, and thou didst comfort me. 2 "Behold, God is my salvation; I will

trust, and will not be afraid; for the LORD GOD is my strength and my song, and he has become my

salvation." 3 With joy you will draw water from the wells of salvation. 4 And you will say in that day:

"Give thanks to the LORD, call upon his name; make known his deeds among the nations, proclaim that

his name is exalted. 5 "Sing praises to the LORD, for he has done gloriously; let this be known in all the

earth. 6 Shout, and sing for joy, O inhabitant of Zion, for great in your midst is the Holy One of Israel."

(One of the readings for Sukkoth)

Psalm 27:5 For he will hide me in his shelter in the day of trouble; he will

conceal me under the cover of his tent (sukkoth), he will set me high upon a

rock. 6 And now my head shall be lifted up above my enemies round about me; and I will offer in his tent sacrifices with

shouts of joy; I will sing and make melody to the LORD.

The Festive Shout

Page 20: Living Waters Wednesday Teaching C. Holoman-6 October 22, 2008.

Psalm 42:4 These things I remember, as I pour out my soul:

how I went with the throng, and led them in procession (dance) to the

house of God, with glad shouts (callings, sound-noise) and songs of

thanksgiving, a multitude keeping festival.

Psalm 89:15 Blessed are the people who know (yada) the festal shout (‘glory’:loud sound, blowing),

who walk, O LORD, in the light of thy countenance,

(note Hebrew parallelism)

Lights, a festival theme

Page 26: Living Waters Wednesday Teaching C. Holoman-6 October 22, 2008.

At the time of Jesus…There were four (4) golden menorahs-

lampstands each about 75 feet tall, with four (4) bowls each. Against them rested four (4) ladders. Four (4) youth of priestly descent each with a pitcher

of oil fill the bowls. The old worn breeches of the priests served as

wicks to the lamps. There was not a court in Jerusalem that was not

filled with light.

Page 27: Living Waters Wednesday Teaching C. Holoman-6 October 22, 2008.

The dark sky at that time was not the grey of today’s light

pollution, it was really dark, no streetlights…only the brilliant

glow of the full moon of Sukkoth-the Feast of Booths. And the city of Jerusalem was bathed in an almost shekinah-

like glory from the four menorahs.

Page 28: Living Waters Wednesday Teaching C. Holoman-6 October 22, 2008.

Into this light at the Feast of Booths in (John 8:12,) “ Jesus said.., I am the

light of the world; he who follows Me will not walk in darkness, but will have

the light of life.” The context of this revelation of His glory was without

doubt the special illumination of the Temple during the Feast of Booths.

Page 29: Living Waters Wednesday Teaching C. Holoman-6 October 22, 2008.

Ancient writings of this period say..

“The Hasidim (holy ones) and ‘the men of Deed’ danced before the people with flaming torches in their hands reciting words of song and praise.

Levities worshiped with harps, liars, cymbals, trumpets and instruments

without number.”

Page 30: Living Waters Wednesday Teaching C. Holoman-6 October 22, 2008.

“At first only the great scholars, members of the Sanhedrin, elders and

men distinguished for their piety — only these danced in the Temple

itself.”

Ancient writings say that “he who has not seen the rejoicing of Succoth

has never seen rejoicing in his life time.”
