Independence Day at Lone

A dozen people took part in the 2014 4th of July Triathlon and enjoyed a beautiful day. Mark your

calendars for the 14th Annual Lone Lake Triathlon next year—7/4/2015, at 8:30am.  Everyone is welcome to join this fun event. Teams are encouraged!

Enthusiam and patriotic bunting won the day for winners of the Best Dock - Larry and Deana Mashuga on Lot 49.

The Sanford and Decker families, Lot 123, took the top prize for their colorful pontoon.

This year’s Best Runabout prize in the Lone Lake 4th of July Boat parade was awarded to the Moberg family boat, which hails from Lot 86.

Readers Respond….

In our June 28 News Brief, we asked readers to share their tips for protecting their gardens from hungry wildlife. Maureen Sanford wrote: Irish Spring soap placed in cheese cloth and tied to stakes around the plants you don’t want eaten works wonders!  I cut the soap into thirds or fourths the long way.  Must be replaced yearly. Bev Napurski added: Irish Spring grated along the perimeter of her gardens keeps the deer out her raspberries, too.!

From Friday, July 4th at 7 a..m. until Sunday night at 7 p.m., boaters who entered Lone Lake at the public launch heard the same message: to protect the lake from invasive species, boaters must “clean, drain and dry” their watercraft and recreational equipment. During the 3-day holiday period, LLPOA volunteers and friends conducted 114 inspections of incoming and outgoing watercraft, versus 52 last year, a 119% increase. #

Watercraft entering the lake were last in 23 different lakes (Minnesota and Wisconsin) versus 14 last year. There were four watercraft last on Mille Lacs before accessing Lone Lake. Mille Lacs is one of the local lakes where close inspection critical because Mille Lacs is infested with zebra mussels, and they can be transported easily via lake water. #

Minnesota currently has 175 water bodies infested with zebra mussels.#

“Every new infestation is extremely serious,” said Ann Pierce, DNR section manager for Ecological and Water Resources. “This means that it’s important for people to take responsibility, follow the laws, and protect the remaining more than 10,000 Minnesota waters. It’s still well worth the effort to protect the uncontaminated water bodies.”#

Please contact Linda Szymanski at 612.600.4511 or via email at [email protected] to become a volunteer, or to learn how you and your guests can prevent the AIS spread into Lone Lake. #

July 4th weekend - inspectors provided 100% coverage

After his boat was declared “in compliance” by DNR-certified volunteer boat inspectors Steve and Karen Frazier, Aitkin County Deputy Sheriff Ben Hallfrisch launched his watercraft on Lone Lake to conduct checks on Lone Lake boats and personal water craft. He reported no violations on the lake during his visit.

To keep Lone Lake safe from the spread of invasive species remember to “Clean-Drain-Dry”:

Clean—inspect closely and remove all plants, animals, and mud (it is the law)

Drain—drain spaces or items that can hold water (it is the law)

Dry—dry boats for five days or more before launching in other waters (recommended)

Look back and ahead….Cont.

more people involved next year in the swim-bike and run mini-triathlon. Photos on page 2.!

On the heels of the Lone Lake Triathlon came the Annual 4th of July Boat Parade with Bob and Roberta Kosloski acting as the LLPOA judges and photographers. The winners (see page 2) will receive their traveling trophies at the annual meeting.#

It was wonderful to have a full slate of AIS boat inspectors for the 4th of July weekend. That was possible only because a group of DNR-certified lake volunteers took time from their busy weekends, and because we hired a boat inspector for July 4th from our AIS Fund. My wife Karen and I were on duty on Saturday night and did many inspections including Aitkin County Sheriff Deputy Ben Hallfrisch‘s vehicle and boat. He complimented Lone Lake on our AIS boat inspection program and reported that everyone on the lake cooperated and had complied with regulations. We thank Linda Szymanski, our boat inspection coordinator, for keeping us aware of the AIS threat and organizing our boat inspectors.#

I look forward to the annual meeting coming up on Sat., July 26th. It’ll feature minnow races for kids, prizes, great food and a wonderful program by the Wild and Free animal rescue and rehab group. Also there will a discussion and vote on a proposed dues increase from $15 to $25. It has been over 20 years since we raised dues. With increased costs of professional memberships, websites, water testing analysis, postage, paid inspectors for high traffic times when no volunteers are available, and plain inflation -- the increase is necessary. We will also elect three officers to the LLPOA board. #

Further out, the board has nearly completed a revised Lake Management Plan and will be working with the membership to set four-year goals at next spring’s Future of Lone Lake Planning Session. High water and its effect on the lake are being followed carefully and the board is working to determine what other measures are necessary to help protect our beautiful lake. We want your ideas and involvement to truly make this a meaningful lake community-wide plan. So, please watch for notices about the planning session to be held next spring.#

Finally, the 2014-15 lake membership rosters will be delivered to paid memberships on Labor Day weekend. Thanks for your support and we’ll talk again later, Steve Frazier, LLPOA president. #

Just for your safety….

Stand-up paddleboards are a blast! There have been many on the lake recently.

Here’s a word to the wise from one boater: if a boater is traveling into the sun, particularly in the evening hours, seeing a paddleboarder becomes particularly difficult due to their narrow profile. While a paddleboarder has the right-of-way, if hit by a boat going 30 mph, that won’t make much difference to one. To boaters: be aware of the narrow profile of paddleboaders. Wear a brimmed hat and/or sunglasses to improve your vision in the sun. Like the bumper sticker says for motorcycles: Start Seeing Paddleboarders.

To paddleboarders: wear bright clothes, carry a whistle, perhaps stay closer into shore where there may be less, or at least, slower boat activity.

The U.S. Coast Guard has published tips for this emerging water activity. Check it out: http://coastguard.dodlive.mil/2012/05/top-10-tips-for-stand-up-paddleboarding/

Let’s keep Lone a safe and fun lake for all.
