I’m happy. Not because something fantas-tic just happened. I’m just your everyday, run-of-the-mill kind of happy. And I am so because that’s the way I choose to feel. For some, we spend so much energy going, planning, doing, and working that we for-get to slow down and take in the good stuff. So, I choose to slow down. Maybe not all together, but certainly in moments. I’m choosing to take a little part of my day and really soak in the positives of my life. Sure,

I’ll still have my moments of discontent and maybe slip into “crazy mom” mode, but I’m going to strive for happy to be my default.

There are tons of things to be happy about this month. The Fall colors are rolling in and we’re finally getting to see a few cooler days. The kids are busy in school and contemplating which Halloween costume will be the perfect choice. This year looks to be full of events for All Hallow’s Eve and Local Life has a breakdown of everything going on to keep you informed. We’re dropping some great Trick or Treating tips that may make your adventure a little more enjoyable. We also recognize that October is “National Breast Cancer Aware-ness” month. Break out your various shades of pink and help us drive awareness and donations to further the research and development of this all too common disease. You’ll definitely want to stay active on Local Life’s Facebook page this month, as we’ll be holding our an-nual Halloween Costume Contest. Look for details inside. Photos will be posted on our FB page and the winner(s) will be announced and awarded at the upcoming Wine Crawl in November.

For those sports nuts out there, I’m sure October is a particularly easy month to find some happiness. The Texas Rangers are making a third consecutive push for that elusive World Series title and the Cowboys are in full stride on the gridiron. We’ll certainly be cheering loud from our fan section. Speaking of fans, I want to encourage all of our business partners to hook up with us on Facebook. Help us share your message by becoming part of the Local Life online community if you haven’t done so already. As always, we’re sharing a ton of great deals for our community to take advantage of. We hope the discounts and savings in the following pages go a long way to assist in your own personal journey for happiness. Enjoy!

Breast Cancer Awareness:

Know Your Normal

Page 9: Local Life Magazine, October 2012

w w w . L o c a l L i f e T X . c o m O C T O B E R 2 0 1 2 7

When breast cancer is found in its earliest, localized stage, the five-year survival rate is 98%. I’m certain your doctor has told you some keys to early detection. All women should have a clinical breast exam at least ev-ery three years and annual exams and mam-mograms starting at age 40. If a woman has a family history of breast cancer, she should begin screening 10 years prior to the family member’s age of diagnosis.

Another important key to early detection is equally important. Know what’s normal for you. Big or small, wide or long, you live with your breasts day in, day out, and you know them better than anyone. So pay attention

and know when something is different.

In the past, you may have been taught a spe-cific, step-by-step technique for performing monthly breast self-examinations. If you are faithful to follow those steps each month, that’s great. Keep up the good habit. But if not, you don’t need any special training or method — you just need to become aware of how your breasts look and feel so that if you notice any differences, you can report them to your health care provider.

Once a month, preferably after your period so your breast tissue is softer and less tender, lie on your back with one arm behind your head.

There is no question — when it comes to breast cancer,

early detection saves lives.

An obstetrician/gynecologist, Dr. Chandra Chellappan cares for women at all stages of life, including pregnancies and well-woman check-ups, at her office in Suite 206 of the medical office buildings at Huguley Memorial Medical Center. For appointments or more information, she may be reached at 817-551-9339.

This spreads the breast tissue more evenly and makes it easier to find lumps. Feel the entire area with your fingertips, including the breast up to the collarbone and your underarm. Then, put the other arm behind your head and repeat on the other side. To be extra thor-ough, you can feel your breast while you are in the shower, since your fingers will glide more easily over wet skin.

Now it’s time to look in the mirror. With your hands pressing down firmly on your hips, look at your breasts for any changes in the size, shape, contour, dimpling or skin appearance. Raise your arms high and do the same.

As you do this from month to month, you will become more aware of what is normal for you. If you notice any of these changes, call your doctor and make an appointment:

u A new lump, hard knot or thickening in the breast or underarm area

u Swelling, warmth, redness or darkening of the breast

u Change in the size or shape of the breast

u Dimpling or puckering of the skin

u Itchy, scaly sore or rash

u A nipple that turns inward or pulls to one side

u Nipple discharge other than breast milk

u Pain in one spot that doesn’t go away

If you do find a lump, don’t panic. Finding a change does not mean that you have can-cer. Most lumps turn out to be harmless, but it’s important to get any of these symptoms checked out by your physician.

Good health is a partnership between a wom-an and her physician, and communication in both directions is crucial. Your physician has special education and training on the human body, but no one knows your body like you do. So take time each month to know what is nor-mal for you.

“Good health is a partnership between a woman and

her physician, and communication in both directions is crucial.”

“Trick or Treat, smell my feet…” Halloween is fast approaching and before you know it your neighborhood will be swarming with fairy princesses and super heroes that have only one thing on their minds – “GIVE ME CANDY!” If you’re like us, the chaos is a decent trade-off for the quality hang time we get to spend with our kiddos. This year before you set out on your neighborhood candy raid, be sure to plan and prepare, accordingly. It’s important to have fun but safety should be your #1 con-cern when it comes to your babies.

1. Power in Numbers: Plan to cruise the block with friends and neighbors and always make sure an adult is accompany-ing the group for proper supervision. It’s OK to hang back so you don’t “cramp their style,” but stay within eyesight.

2. Plan Your Route: Don’t just roam around aimlessly. Know where you’re going and stick to it. Tell the kiddos it’s to ensure you don’t miss any houses – maxi-mize your loot-haul, if you will!

3. Light it Up: Flashlights are a great idea for all trick-or-treaters. They’re only a couple of bucks and the kids love them. If you already have enough flashlights laying around, just make sure to pop in some fresh batteries. Costumes that light up are also a great tip for keeping a visual on the crew.

4. Inspect All Candy: BE-FORE they eat it! This is a tough one because it’s dark and they’re candy-crazy on this night. A good idea is for the chaperoning adult to carry a candy bucket pre-filled for those mid-trip cravings. Unfortunately, you don’t know your whole neighborhood or what they’re handing out to children.

5. Avoid Dark Houses: Kind of self-explanatory here, I suppose, but certainly worth mentioning. Some folks just don’t like participating so respect their choice by skipping the houses with the porch light off. Plus, it’s just a little sketchy and keeping your kids in sight is the goal.

Local Life’s Tips for a Safe and Happy Halloween!

Page 23: Local Life Magazine, October 2012

6. Stay Outside: It goes without saying but it is important to mention to your kiddos. Never go inside a home or get into a vehicle with someone who is not part of your group. Don’t narrow it down to strangers ei-ther. Remember, it’s the ones your kids rec-ognize that are more likely to entice them to enter.

7. Potty Time: Everyone means ev-eryone! You’re about to drag a crew of mini-bladdered sugar monsters on a 2 hour hike. You don’t want to get stuck a mile from the house and start seeing the wee-wee dance from 3 different little ones. Plus, I think we all know it’s contagious. If one of them has to go – they all have to go!

8. Costume Control: Cute is fun but practical will save some headaches. Pay attention to masks with limited visibility (you want large eye holes). Also, check the fit and length of costumes. You want to avoid tripping hazards as we’ve got a lot of ground to cover on this night. Under shirts and leggings for cooler temps and less if we’re expecting a typical hot Texas night.

9. I.D. Cards: Take a note card or

make a label that has the necessary info on it

in the event that someone gets separated from

the group, i.e. name, address, phone number,

and phone number of the chaperone(s). Make

one for all kids and have them put it in a pock-

et or pin it to the costume somewhere.

10. Have The Talk: Do this as

a group and maybe hand out a little pre-trip

candy to fill their mouths so they can listen.

There are a few key things to cover and many

of them are in the previous 9 steps. Here are

some other talking points. (A) Courtesy: only

take 1 item per house and always say thank

you, (B) Respect flower beds and other land-

scape by sticking to sidewalks, (C) Be very

cautious approaching pets or other animals,

(D) Watch for cars, look both ways before en-

tering a street, (E) Review “Stop, Drop,

and Roll” as there tend to be decora-

tive candles about and costumes

can get caught, (F) Remind ev-

eryone to have fun but be safe!
