Welcome to Summer Local! Summer holidays are nearly here and there's plenty to keep you busy around the borough, whether it's visiting one of our beautiful parks, an historic castle or taking in a show.

It's that time of year to think about the people in your community who you would like to recognise for something they have done. This year's Love Where We Live Awards are open for nominations – see more on p4–5 and also details about our new sports award for young people aged 16 and under.

As usual you'll find the magazine filled with other news and information to keep you up-to-date. If you have ideas for future articles, do get in touch.

Enjoy the summer!

The Love Where We Live Awards are back for 2015 and are now open for nominations! We are asking you to help ensure those individuals, organisations, businesses and groups who work hard in our community to make our borough such a great place to live and work are recognised and acknowledged.

Remember, the awards are not just about big achievements; sometimes it is the little things that matter the most. And with nine categories to choose from this year including our NEW Young Sports Achiever of the Year award for those 16 and under, we are sure you’ll find an award to nominate for.

Last year’s awards were our best yet with over 220 nominations – please help us make this year even bigger and better by nominating those special people whose extraordinary qualities and fantastic efforts deserve to be recognised.

The finalists and winners will be chosen by an independent judging panel and invited to an awards ceremony on the evening of Wednesday 7 October, where the winners will be announced, Oscars-style!

How to nominateComplete and submit a nomination form online at lovewherewelive.co.uk or you can pick up an entry form at the Gateway, Weald Information Centre or Town Hall which you can complete and return to us.

The closing date is Friday 31 July at 5pm so don’t delay nominate today!

The Awards Categories for 2015 Ethical Business AwardThis award will recognise a local company that can demonstrate its commitment to having a positive impact on the community and/or the environment. This could include taking steps to reduce carbon emissions, such as a recycling or energy-saving programme, supporting a local charity, providing employment opportunities for young people or buying from local companies.

Do you know or work for an organisation that is putting something back into the community? Sponsored by John Lewis at home Tunbridge Wells

Best Group AwardIs there a group of people who are the lifeblood of your community? Perhaps they can always be relied upon to help out at events or raise funds. It could be that they are championing a ‘green’ project, or creating opportunities for people to get involved in local activities such as a club or other social group.

Do you admire a group’s collective energy, enthusiasm or achievements? Sponsored by Tunbridge Wells Borough Council

Safer Community AwardThis award will highlight the efforts of a person or people who have helped make your community a safer place to live. This could involve improving the safety of pedestrians, children and cyclists in your area, or taking steps to stamp out crime and anti-social behaviour.

Who do you know that believes in positive change and making it happen? Sponsored by Town & Country Housing Group

Individual Hero AwardInspired by Val JoyThis award is for an individual who makes a special effort to enhance other people’s lives. Perhaps it’s the little things they do that go a long way and they are simply always there if needed. Or they may do something that is particularly meaningful to their community or beneficial to the environment in which they live – that ‘unsung’ hero who deserves to be recognised.

Whose contribution do you appreciate?Sponsored by Town & Country Housing Group

Young Volunteer of the Year AwardThis award is for that young person you know, aged 24 or under, who stands out as somebody with very special qualities; somebody who gives up their spare time to volunteer and, in doing so, contributes to the welfare of others, their community as a whole or the environment.

Would you like to see a particular young person rewarded for their efforts?Sponsored by Kent and Sussex Courier

Site Allocations Development Plan document consultation and next stepsThe Council has recently completed a major consultation exercise on a document that sets out future development plans for the borough. The Site Allocations Development Plan Document (DPD) identifies sites for housing and other types of development up to 2026. The main focus is on the settlements of Royal Tunbridge Wells, Southborough, Paddock Wood, Cranbrook and Hawkhurst.

The final draft of the DPD was consulted on from 9 February – 23 March 2015 and 1,448 comments were received from the general public, developers, local organisations and national bodies. The document is due to be submitted to the Planning Inspectorate in June. Following this, there will be a public examination of the DPD which will be run by an independent inspector appointed by the Government. The inspector will decide which issues and development sites need to be examined in further detail and may invite people who made comments to appear at the examination to put their views across.

The inspector will then assess all the comments and evidence and prepare a report setting out what changes may be needed to the DPD. If the inspector’s report supports the approach that the Council has taken, then the document will be taken through the Council’s committee process to formally adopt it as a key planning document for the borough. The Site Allocations DPD will then be used to decide planning applications on the sites that the DPD identifies.

Following adoption of the Site Allocations DPD, the Council will commence work on a new Local Plan, which will include a complete review of the development needed for the borough, looking further ahead to beyond 2030. Further public engagement will take place throughout this process.

If you’d like any more information on the documents that the Planning Policy team is preparing, please contact: [email protected].

What to do1 Add the bulgur wheat to a heat-proof bowl and pour in

enough freshly-boiled water to cover. Cover with a tea towel or clingfilm and set aside for 10 minutes. Drain and rinse well under cold running water. Set aside in a sieve hung over a bowl to ensure it drains completely.

2 Meanwhile, add the beetroot and radishes to a mixing bowl. Finely chop all the parsley, discarding the thick stalks but including thinner ones, and add to the bowl. Pick the mint leaves, discarding the stalks, and finely chop. Add to the bowl, along with the shallot.

3 Add the drained bulgur wheat and baharat spices and stir everything together. Finally add the rapeseed oil and lemon juice to taste, seasoning with salt and black pepper. Set aside for 30 minutes to allow the flavours to infuse.

4. Preheat a griddle pan to smoking hot. Drizzle a little oil over the cheese then griddle for a couple of minutes on each side until crisp.

5. Give the bulgur wheat a final stir and spoon into a serving dish. Top with the halloumi and serve immediately.

Exercise on Referral We are all aware of the benefits of exercise and the effect that it can have on our mental, physical and general wellbeing. When you’re not used to exercising, or if you’re juggling with medical conditions and injuries, it can be really difficult to know where to start and if what you’re doing is safe. This is where our Exercise Referral scheme can help.

Put simply, it’s a partnership between KCC Public Health, Tunbridge Wells Borough

Council and Fusion Lifestyle to help people discover the health benefits of regular exercise at a subsidised price in a supported environment!

If you’re one of the 70 per cent of men or 80 per cent of women who don’t take enough exercise then you might be eligible for a helping hand. Clients are referred to the scheme by their GP, physiotherapist or

other health professional. Once you’ve had an initial consultation you’ll then receive a free induction and subsidised membership for 10 weeks. Regular users will then be offered a subsidised monthly membership thereafter.

To find out more go to tunbridgewells.gov.uk/choosehealth or call 01892 554201.

Green waste recyclingOur Parks team and ground maintenance contractors, Sodexo, have been working together to reduce the costs of disposing of green waste and the purchase of mulch for all the parks' beds and borders. What we are doing…Reducing our purchase costs of mulch (200 tonnes) which is used to improve soil quality and reduce weeds.

This year we have started to use compost produced in Kent; the compost is pure recycled green waste from households in the county, including Tunbridge Wells, and does not contain any animal waste.

This product is 30 per cent cheaper than the previous mushroom compost.

Over the past few years the cost of taking larger sized green waste to landfill has risen dramatically. Sodexo have purchased a wood chipper and have started to chip prunings and branches, the resulting woodchip is then laid on woodland path areas such as those at the Kent &

Sussex Crematorium and Farmcombe Road Rec.

We are looking at building green waste recycling sites in several parks. Dunorlan Park has recently been completed and in a few years' time will be producing its own compost, thus at all stages reducing the purchase of compost, reducing the cost of landfill and reducing the carbon footprint.

Dan Dibden from Sodexo stated ‘After a successful winter prune, our teams will be laying down 200 tonnes of processed green waste on beds and borders across the town.’

Sharon Carter from the Parks Team stated ‘This is a great project; the compost is a local product and the construction of our own composting areas will save money that will be used to further improve our lovely parks and retain the Green Flag and South and SE Britain in Bloom Gold Medals.’

Every day our health

professionals see

people who could

really improve their

health with a little exercise.

Many physical conditions are improved or managed better with the help of exercise and a healthy lifestyle.

The launch of the Royal Tunbridge Wells in Bloom competition took place in Calverley Precinct in April. It was a busy couple of days for the ‘Bloom’ team promoting the competition to the residents and offering planting advice. The ‘Bloom’ team were also in the Royal Victoria Shopping Centre in May promoting the competition further, thanks to sponsorship from RVP.

What’s new?Entries will be accepted from residents and businesses within a three mile radius of the Town Hall. This now covers: Southborough, High Brooms, Rusthall and Langton Green.

JudgingThe local competition will be judged towards the end of July, with allotment entries being judged in mid June. All entrants will be invited to the awards ceremony on 24 September being held this year at the Hotel du Vin in Crescent Road, who have kindly sponsored the campaign by providing their function room for the ceremony awards.

Royal Tunbridge Wells town is being judged in the South and South East in Bloom competition on 15 July this year, so let’s work together to create a beautiful and

colourful town. The judges are given a full tour of the town taking in the town centre, Calverley Grounds, High Street, The Pantiles, Kent & Sussex Crematorium, Hawkenbury Allotments in Halls Hole Road, Oakley School and finishing in Dunorlan Park. Local residents and businesses can help us achieve our goal of retaining a Gold award for the town and Dunorlan Park by making their gardens bright, colourful and attractive to wildlife.

Keep on running… Happy birthday Royal Tunbridge Wells parkrun!Saturday 25 April marked the first anniversary of Royal Tunbridge Wells parkrun. One hundred and sixty one determined runners, and three dogs, braved the drizzle and somewhat chilly conditions to take on the scenic 5km course around Dunorlan Park.It was a great turnout for the anniversary parkrun, which over the last year has seen a total of 4,593 runners rack up an amazing 22,965 kilometres! Last year’s Mayor, Cllr Julian Stanyer was on hand to officially start the run and send the runners on their way with a warm message of congratulations and encouragement.

He said: 'We are very fortunate as a Council to be able to offer Dunorlan Park as a venue. It is definitely one of the most attractive parkruns in Kent, and provides an inspiring setting for the joggers, fun-runners and more serious athletes who want to get fit and test themselves on a weekly basis. Thanks must go especially to Joe Watts, the Royal Tunbridge Wells parkrun Event Director, and his brilliant team of volunteers for all their hard work over the last year.'

Joe Watts, Event Director, said: 'It was a fantastic effort from our 23- strong volunteer team to make this event so special and memorable for all in attendance. Most of the

runners stayed around after the run as there was plenty of food, and a wide selection of cakes and drink on offer. We also awarded some spot prizes, all of which had been donated by volunteers and runners – including a home-made cake in the shape of a running shoe! It is an honour to be involved with this free, weekly event and I hope to inspire many more people, no matter what their ability, to get out and running for years to come.'

Parkrun takes place every Saturday morning at 9am in Dunorlan Park over a 5km course. The beautiful Victorian landscaped park is set in 78 acres with a boating lake and café.

The idea behind parkrun is to set up free, weekly, 5km timed runs in countries all across the world. These events are open to everyone and are designed to be safe and easy to take part in. They usually take place in pleasant parkland surroundings and the organisers encourage people of all abilities to take part – from those taking their first steps in running to Olympians, from juniors to those with more experience – all are welcome.

The organisers are always looking for volunteers to help out in a range of tasks as Royal Tunbridge Wells parkrun goes from strength to strength. If you or family or friends can help out please e-mail: [email protected].

For more information about Royal Tunbridge Wells parkrun and how to register, visit the website: parkrun.org.uk/royaltunbridgewells. Also find them on Facebook and Twitter – @RTWparkrun.

Tunbridge Wells Sports Centre redevelopment works to start soon...The £1.7m redevelopment at Tunbridge Wells Sports Centre will begin at the end of June and will see many aspects of the facility improved. The newly transformed and upgraded facilities will provide:

New, modern first floor gym New multi-use functional space New indoor cycling area on gym

floor New ground floor multi-purpose

studio Refurbished swimming pools Luxurious spa facilities within

gym changing space New café Fun and interactive soft play

centre

New high quality ground floor changing rooms

A new and welcoming open reception area

The changes being made to the building are aimed at maximising the availability of facilities to local residents and increasing activity levels. During the works, customers will still have access to leisure facilities, however, there will be some changes to the facility arrangements for the duration of the project. This will mean that whilst one part of the building is closed, customers will still have access to the same facilities in another area. There will also be temporary facilities and some existing facilities will be moved around to minimise the disruption caused by the works.

The swimming pool will close on 3 August for a short period. Choice members and local residents wishing to swim will be able to use the swimming pool at The Weald Sports Centre during this time.

Throughout the process there will be regular progress updates about the work and any changes to existing facilities available in the centre and online. You can register your details at fusion-lifestyle.com/redevs to receive regular e-mail updates. Alternatively, if you have any questions, please e-mail [email protected] and Fusion will endeavour to answer and publish to the Frequently Asked Questions section of their website.

Up the apples and pears to a better park!2015 is a big year for Grosvenor and Hilbert Park as the lottery funded Parks for People project enters the capital works phase. Since January, contractors have been on site working on different aspects of the project and this is set to continue until spring 2016.Work is already well under way re-opening the original Rochdale Road entrance to the park, refurbishing the Bowls Pavilion and café, and restoring the lake and dripping wells. Contractors are due on site in late May to start work on renovating the playground and to begin the large- scale landscape works.

The popular skate park received a small but welcome facelift with a few changes and new additions as approved by the users. And this saw the start of a long-term volunteer based project to replace the boardwalk through the woodland. If you would like to get involved and volunteer please do get in touch.

An exciting addition to the park is our new Community Orchard! 15 semi-mature fruit trees planted in December

2014 kicked it off, with 25 trees being planted in February this year by members of the local community. Families and friends turned out for a sunny but chilly day planting their trees and blessing them with cider, a tradition called wassailing. The orchard will make a beautiful and peaceful space in the park for relaxing, picnicking, and maybe even some cider-making! Our second phase of community planting will be taking place this winter. If you would like to

sponsor and plant a tree please go to the Friends' website fogh.org.uk for an application form. The deadline is 1 July 2015.

For more information on the park lottery project, events and volunteer opportunities you can follow the Facebook page GHParkHLF or contact the Parks team on 01892 554031.

KENT PERFORMERS’ FIRST WORLD WAR MUSICAL TRANSFERS TO WEST END "Soldiers are dreamers; when the guns begin they think of firelit homes, clean beds and wives” SIEGFRIED SASSOONThe Dreamers, about the selfless valour of Captain David ‘Reggie’ Salomons in Gallipoli 100 years ago, was written by 20-something Kent writers James Beeney and Gina Georgio and features a cast of 20 and a band of six musicians called the Virgin Soldiers. The Dreamers brings a fresh approach to the little known story of Captain David ‘Reggie’ Salomons from Kent, who led his men to the battlefields of Gallipoli in 1915.

With a six-piece contemporary band ‘Virgin Soldiers’, a cast of 20 young men and women, and on-screen narration from Amanda Redman, Christopher Beeny and Sir Tim Rice, this is a unique piece of theatre.

Combining heart-rending music and lyrics with factual narration, The Dreamers sees the Great War through the eyes of the soldiers and the families that they left behind.

Just 40 minutes from the coast of Gallipoli, the men of Third Field Company were involved in a tragic accident when their ship, HMS

Hythe, was struck by another vessel and sank within 10 minutes.

In an act of selfless valour Reggie, their beloved leader, sacrificed his own life. His last words were 'I will not leave the ship until I see my men saved.'

Had the men set off a day later, they would have been included in the War Cabinet’s decision to stop sending troops to Gallipoli and 156 young men may have survived.

This original production brought audiences of all ages to their feet and moved many to tears when it premiered at the Assembly Hall Theatre, Royal Tunbridge Wells, in October 2014.

Lady Lucy French, Director of St James Theatre said: 'This is exactly what the centenary should be about: young people engaging, getting involved, playing their part. This music captures the essence of commemoration across the generations.'

Finally the weather is improving, so the Community Safety Unit offers you these timely top tips for a safer summer!

If you’re having a barbecue, remember that drinking alcohol and fire do not mix! Make sure that the barbecue is placed outside, away from the house, fence, shed... and is kept away from children, games and pets. NEVER use petrol or paraffin on your barbecue and don’t leave it unattended.

Don’t drink and drive – if you start drinking in the afternoon or stay up late socialising, you may not realise that you could still be over the limit either later in the day or the next morning.

Consider others when socialising outdoors. Neighbours are more likely to have their windows open when it’s warm – so keep noise to a minimum.

Don’t be a target for opportunist thieves. When in the back garden make sure the front of your house is secure. Make sure that garden furniture, barbecues, bikes, and gardening equipment are marked with your postcode and securely stored away in a locked shed or garage when you’re finished with them.

If visiting the beach or going for a summer stroll in the countryside, leave valuables at home and don’t leave any belongings on show in your car. Even an old coat could be tempting to thieves.

If you’re going on holiday… Remember to shut

and lock all doors, windows, gates, sheds and outbuildings before leaving your home.

Make it look like you’re in – ask a trusted neighbour to pop in and draw curtains and clear post from the letter box while you are away.

Timer switches set to turn on lamps in the evening can also make it look like someone is home. Cancel any paper or milk deliveries.

Don’t advertise your impending holiday on Facebook or Twitter.

Mayor’s charity for 2015/16

Take care and be safe this summer

This year’s choice is ellenor, previously known as chYps. Serving a community of one million, ellenor is the only charity in Kent to provide hospice care for people of all ages – whether a newborn baby, child, teenager, adult or elderly person in the final moments of their life.

An important part of ellenor’s work is caring for over 150 children with life-limiting and life-threatening conditions in the comfort of their own home and providing

consistency of support for teenagers who later require care as adults.

This care is available to families living in the borough of Tunbridge Wells and some other areas in the county. If you’d like to find out how you can support ellenor, visit ellenor.org or call the fundraising team on 01322 626504.

The Mayor, Cllr David Elliott, said, ‘It was

important for June and me to support a charity that hadn’t been adopted by Mayors previously, and I have always been interested in supporting young people in some way. Ellenor has only recently established themselves in Tunbridge Wells, so I’m looking forward to supporting them over the next year, raising funds and their profile within the borough.’

A Walk on the Wild Side: Exploring our Enduring Fascination with the Animal World12 June – 20 September 2015

What inspires artists to draw and paint animals? What makes people want to create taxidermy from dead animals? A walk on the Wild Side is an exhibition that explores our relationship with animals, from the early Renaissance period through to modern history.

A mixture of natural history, fine art, and everyday objects, this exhibition explores why humans have an enduring fascination and curiosity with the animal kingdom. Highlights of the exhibition are exciting loans from the British Museum alongside objects from the museum's own collection.’

New Outdoor GymTunbridge Wells Borough Council has been successful in securing some funding to develop an outdoor gym, which will be installed next to the cycle way on the area of Colebrook Recreation Ground that sits between Clifton Road and Oak Road. The work is expected to start week commencing 8 June and should take about one week to complete.

The gym will include a range of resistance and cardiovascular equipment to help residents improve both their strength and heart health. The equipment will consist of:

A Duo Air Walker – designed to work the muscles in the lower body, improve flexibility and build strength in the hips and legs

A Duo Cross Rider – similar to the cross trainers that are found in gyms, this works the heart, arms and legs simultaneously

Chest Press – used to provide an upper body workout, focusing on strengthening the chest and arms

Lateral Pull Down – designed to develop the shoulders and triceps

Duo Upper Body Workout – this station provides a great workout for the arm muscles

Duo Workout Skier – used to strengthen the lower back and abdomen whilst improving flexibility

Duo Workout Leg Press – helps to strengthen the hip and thigh muscles

Rowing Machine – a full body cardio workout using both the arms and legs to imitate rowing actions

Body Twist – will help develop flexibility, especially in the lower back and hips

Tai Chi Wheel – achieving arm movements similar to those performed in Tai Chi this will help improve flexibility and co-ordination in the arms, wrists and shoulders. Also suitable for wheelchair users.

Arm Bike – provides a full body workout, helping to build stamina, developing the arms and legs

Workout Stepper – provides a great cardio workout and targets the muscles in the legs and bottom

Workout Cycle – a great cardio workout, perfect for building the leg muscles and working on stamina.

The equipment is suitable for people aged 14 years and over and should not be used by children who are younger than 14.

The gym is free to use, helping to make opportunities to exercise more accessible for the residents of Sherwood.

Qualified gym instructors from the Health team at Tunbridge Wells Borough Council, will organise circuit-style gym sessions shortly after the equipment is installed. This is to help residents understand how to use the equipment safely, support the less able and to help you get the most benefit from it.

Thank youBurrswood would like to say a big thank you to last year's Mayor, Cllr Julian Stanyer for choosing Burrswood as his Charity of the Year. This has given us a wonderful opportunity in the borough to increase awareness of the work of Burrswood as a hospital which cares for the whole person, and to engage with members of the local community through a varied programme of events. These have included a Flower Festival, a Wine Tasting, a Ladies' Lunch, a Ball, a Film Gala, and several Concerts. He has been very supportive by attending our events, and talking about Burrswood at many of his engagements through the year. He has also encouraged high profile guests to come to Burrswood, such as his recent visit with the High Sheriff of Kent. We are extremely grateful for the additional funds raised during the year which will help support the care for more patients and improve facilities at Burrswood. For more details please see our website burrswood.org.uk.

Super Hoopers! Tunbridge Wells 3on3 Community Basketball TournamentThis summer will see the return of the annual Tunbridge Wells 3on3 Basketball Tournament in Calverley Grounds.

Last year's competition was a huge success with over 40 players competing for medals and more than 100 spectators enjoying the event. With teams from Tunbridge Wells, Tonbridge, Sevenoaks and Crowborough, the tournament was a truly local affair.

This year's competition, scheduled for Saturday 29 August during the bank holiday weekend, is expected to be ‘bigger and better,’ according to Konstantin Kisin, one of the organisers. ‘We expect to have more teams from all over the South East and

London. The tournament created such a buzz in the basketball community that we're struggling to accommodate all the teams wishing to participate this year’, he went on to add.

The event, organised with the support of Tunbridge Wells Borough Council and local businesses, takes place alongside the Local & Live Music Festival with visitors able to enjoy

both the music and the basketball at Calverley Grounds.

For information about watching or participating in the tournament, contact [email protected] or join the Facebook event by searching for ‘TW 3on3’.

For sponsorship opportunities please contact: [email protected].

Teams from the 2014 tournament celebrate their success!

THE MUST-SEE MUSICAL OF THE SUMMER COMES TO THE ASSEMBLY HALL THEATRE

The Assembly Hall Theatre brings another big musical to the stage – an all-singing and all-dancing cast star in a new stage production of the Doris Day classic ‘Calamity Jane’.

Following numerous highly-acclaimed productions that include Sweeney Todd and Sunset Boulevard, The Watermill Theatre returns with an intimate new production of the classic musical Calamity Jane starring Jodie Prenger (Oliver!, Spamalot and One Man, Two Guvnors) and Emmerdale’s Tom Lister.

With an Oscar-nominated score that includes The Black Hills of Dakota, The Deadwood Stage (Whip-Crack-Away), Just Blew in from the Windy City and the award- winning song Secret Love, Calamity Jane is a show not to be missed. A cast of multi-talented actor/musicians create an unforgettable experience, as this brand new production gets to the heart and soul of the musical.

Calamity Jane can outrun and outshoot any man in Deadwood. Hard, boastful and desperate to impress, she travels to Chicago on the Deadwood Stage to recruit a star, Adelaide Adams. But things don't go too smoothly for Calamity, as everyone in town favours the new girl and she struggles to keep her jealousy and pride in check. It takes her long-standing enemy Wild Bill Hickok to make her see sense, and realise her Secret Love…

Jodie Prenger is best known for winning the role of ‘Nancy’ in Cameron Mackintosh’s West End production of 'Oliver!' through the BBC television series 'I’d Do Anything'. During her run in the show at the Theatre Royal Drury Lane she received both critical and public acclaim. Since then she has starred in the National Theatre’s hit production of 'One Man, Two Guvnors' both in the West End and on tour, and as ‘Lady of the Lake’ in 'Spamalot'. Jodie is also a regular presenter on BBC Radio 2.

Tom Lister most recently played ‘Grimes and Eel’ in the world premiere of 'Water Babies' at Leicester Curve. He is probably best known to TV audiences for his role as ‘Carl King’ in ITV’s 'Emmerdale', a part he played for nine years. His theatre credits also include ‘Pan’ in 'Loves Mistress' at the Globe Theatre and ‘Ralph’ in 'Accrington Pals' at the West Yorkshire Playhouse.

‘Prenger is a force to be reckoned with, Tom Lister’s Wild Bill Hickok proves to be perfect leading-man material, boasting both charisma and talent.’ The Stage

So grab a partner, slap your thigh, shout 'yeeha' and come and watch this whip-cracking summer musical.
