A chip card is a debit or credit card that contains an embedded microchip as well as the traditional magnetic stripe. The chip protects in-store payments because it generates a unique, one-time code that is needed for each transaction to be approved. While it helps to enhance the security of your debit card, it does not give you total security. There is no such thing as total security with technology. So why is everyone going through the added expense of this endeavor? Quite simply, it adds another layer of security to your card. It will help deter the counterfeit card fraud transactions that happen with the “card present”. It does not help in the online transaction world where the “card is not present”. These two terms are in quotes because this is how these transactions are defined in the card world. There are different securities you can utilize for both types of transactions that are discussed below. “Card present” are transactions completed at merchants, restaurants, gas pumps and ATMs. There are many security measures you as a consumer can take to enhance the security of your card. It is always recommended that upon receiving any new card you change your PIN number to be your own and to never share it or write it down anywhere. Never give your card information over the phone to anyone. There are many scams with emails, phone calls, or texts stating your card has been blocked and to unblock please confirm your card and PIN number. Financial institutions should never call you and ask you for your card number, and they would especially never ask for your PIN. Never loan your card out to anyone. Friendly fraud is extremely common especially among family members. The bank has securities in place to help deter fraud as well. Transactions are monitored through a fraud system. It helps to block transactions that are not normal to your card usage or merchant region location. The EMV chip card adds another layer of security that should deny transactions that are being attempted with a counterfeit card. None of the solutions listed will provide you with 100% security, but utilizing all of these solutions will improve your security. “Card not present” are transactions done primarily on the internet or over the phone. Typically with these transactions you will be asked for the secure 3 digit CVV code on the back of the card. That is a security feature that can be compromised. There is also a way to add an online pin code to your cards. Your First Federal debit card uses MasterCard Securecode, and you can register by going to www.firstfedindiana.bank and click on MasterCard Securecode located under the personal tab. You simply register your card number and create a passcode. Merchants that are enrolled in this program will then ask for the passcode during your transaction. Please note that not all merchants utilize this program but it is still a strong recommendation you enroll your card. Please bear in mind, the fact you have an EMV chip card does nothing to prevent fraud on a “card not present” transaction. BEGINNING OCTOBER 2016, FIRST FEDERAL WILL BE ISSUING EMV CHIP CARDS TO ALL DEBIT CARD CUSTOMERS. IF YOU CURRENTLY HAVE A DEBIT CARD WITH FIRST FEDERAL AND DO NOT RECEIVE A NEW CARD BY NOVEMBER 15 th , PLEASE CALL US AT 260-356-3311.

EMV Chip Debit Card Issuance and Layered Security

What are EMV chip cards? A chip card is a debit or credit card that contains an embedded microchip as well as the traditional magnetic stripe. The chip protects in-store payments because it generates a unique, one-time code that is needed for each transaction to be approved. While it helps to enhance the security of your debit card, it does not give you total security. There is no such thing as total security with technology. There are different securities you can utilize for both types of transactions that are discussed below.

“Card present” are transactions completed at merchants, restaurants, gas pumps and ATMs. There are many security measures you as a consumer can take to enhance the security of your card.

• It is always recommended that upon receiving any new card you change your PIN number to be your own and to never share it or write it down anywhere.

There are many scams with emails, phone calls, or texts stating your card has been blocked and to unblock please confirm your card and PIN number. Financial institutions should never call you and ask you for your card number, and they would especially never ask for your PIN.

• Never loan your card out to anyone. Friendly fraud is extremely common especially among family members.

The bank has securities in place to help deter fraud as well. • Transactions are monitored through a fraud system. It helps to block transactions that are not

normal to your card usage or merchant region location. • The EMV chip card adds another layer of security that should deny transactions that are being

attempted with a counterfeit card. None of the solutions listed will provide you with 100% security, but utilizing all of these solutions will improve your security.

“Card not present” are transactions done primarily on the internet or over the phone. • Typically with these transactions you will be asked for the secure 3 digit CVV code on the back
