PICKERING The Order of Elks is fortunate to have a very diverse membership. Because of the Elks, I have be- come acquainted with people from just about all occupations, trades and professions. These Mem- bers bring all sorts of skills and experience to the membership and a treasure trove of talent. Among that talent are those who have been managers and supervi- sors. Perhaps they started and ran their own businesses or had officer-level experience in the military or corporate America. They may be active in their industry or maybe retired with some time available for worthy causes. These people often find themselves holding office in Local Lodges, State Associations and on Grand Lodge committees. I think if you asked them, most would admit that holding office in the Elks brings different challenges than what one would expect in private enterprise or, certainly, the armed forces. Supervising volun- teers requires a very different strategy and other, perhaps more subtle, tactics to be successful. After all, a volunteer is giving his or her valuable time and is entitled to our gratitude for every minute donated regardless of outcome. So what encourages people to freely give time that once was com- pensated? How does one motivate a person when there are no raises to dangle or missed promo- tions to threaten? It seems to me that shared accomplishment and gratitude are currencies that motivate volunteerism. A leader should establish an achievable goal, provide a game-plan to meet it, describe the tasks to which individual volunteers are assigned and provide the guidance up-front on how to accomplish those tasks. If it is necessary to correct a volunteer, it should only be done in private, diplomatically. The only thing any volunteer should ever hear publicly announced is praise. No one enjoys being a part of a negative experience particularly as a volunteer. Every project should involve public and private recognition of the efforts of each volunteer so that each project leaves them with a sense of accomplishment and pride of purpose. That sort of thing is contagious, encour- aging other people to pitch-in and growing the volunteer base for future projects. At least that’s what got me out of bed on those early weekend mornings to help cook pancakes for so many years. See you down the road.

GL Newsletter, August 2013 GER Message: Holding of-fice in Elks poses special challenge Message from the Grand Exalted Ruler MILLARD C. PICKERING The Order of Elks is fortunate to have a very diverse membership. Because of the Elks, I have be-come acquainted with people from just about all occupations, trades and professions. These Mem-bers bring all sorts of skills and experience to the membership and a treasure trove of talent.

Among that talent are those who have been managers and supervi-sors. Supervising volun-teers requires a very different strategy and other, perhaps more subtle, tactics to be successful. After all, a volunteer is giving his or her valuable time and is entitled to our gratitude for every minute donated regardless of outcome. So what encourages people to freely give time that once was com-

pensated? How does one motivate a person when there are no raises to dangle or missed promo-tions to threaten? That sort of thing is contagious, encour-aging other people to pitch-in and growing the volunteer base for future projects. The 2014 Most Valuable Student scholar-ship application will be available after September 1, 2013. The Elks National Foundation will award 500 four-year scholarships to the highest-rated applicants in the 2013 competition. Any high school senior who is a citizen of the

United States is eligible to apply. Applicants need not be related to a member of

the Elks. College students are not eligible to apply. Applicants must be citizens of the United States

on the date their applications are signed; per-manent legal resident status does not qualify.

Male and female students compete separately. Applicants will be judged on scholarship, leader-

ship, and financial need. All scholarships are in the form of certificates of

award conditional upon the full-time enrollment of the winner in an accredited U.S. college or university.

Applications must advance through local, district and state competitions to reach national judging. The Chicago office of the Elks National Founda-tion will notify the 500 national finalists by email in late February 2013.

Ranging from $1,000 per year to $15,000 per year, Most Valuable Student scholarships are for students pursuing a four-year degree, on a full-time basis (minimum of 12 semester hours), in a U.S. college or university.

Applications will be available online at www.elks.org/enf/scholars, from high school counselors and from local Lodges. Applications must be submitted to the local Lodge by December 6, 2013.

Legacy Awards are $4,000 scholarships ($1,000 per year for four years). The Foundation will offer a total of up to 250 awards. Any child or grandchild (or step-child, step-

grandchild, or legal ward) of a living Elk who joined the order on or before April 1, 2011, is eligible to apply. The Elk must also be a paid-up member through March 31, 2014. Great-grandchildren are not eligible.

The applicant must be a high school senior. The applicant must apply online only. Applications

will be available ONLINE ONLY after September 1, 2013. http://www.elks.org/enf/scholars/legacy.cfm

If the applicant's parent and grandparent are both Elk members, the applicant must apply through the parent's Elks Lodge.

Students may apply for more than one ENF schol-arship; however, they may win only one. In cases where the student qualifies for more than one, we will award the scholarship with the greater value.

Legacy Awards may only be applied to accredited US American schools, colleges or universities. (Note: Applicants from Guam, Panama, Puerto Rico and the Philippines may apply Legacy Awards toward schools, colleges or universities in their respective homes.)

Applicants must take the Scholastic Aptitude Test or the American College Test by December 31, 2013.

The student must complete and submit the ONLINE application by 12:00 p.m. (noon) Central Standard Time on the January 31, 2014, deadline. When a student registers to complete the online application, both the applicant and Lodge Secretary will be noti-fied by email.

The Most Valuable Student and Legacy Awards con-tests begin on September 1st. Applications for the Most Valuable student contest are available at local high schools. Any high school senior is eligible. Legacy scholarships for children and grandchildren of Elk members must be filed online at www.elks.org/enf/scholars/legacy.cfm.

The next meeting of the Southwest District will be Sun-day, September 15th at Monessen Lodge. The District Dep-uty clinic will begin at 12:00 noon with the regular meeting beginning at 1:00 PM.

The Lodge will be closed on Monday, September 2nd due to Labor Day.

We still have about 120 members who have not paid their 2013-2014 dues which were due on April 1, 2013. Delin-quent members have been notified and are posted at the bar and cannot attend Lodge functions or be served at the bar.

Thank you to the members and friends who volunteered their time during August. More volunteers are always needed for our weekly Wing Nites and our monthly Steak Frys as well as ticket sellers. We are able to keep the pric-es low by using volunteers, but more volunteers are need-ed. If interested please contact any Lodge officer or House Committee member. Or you can call the Lodge office at 724-628-4237.

Connellsville Elks Gift Certificates make excellent gifts. Request your certificates at the bar.

Members who provide us with their email address will receive the online bulletin and periodic updates on Lodge activities. If we do not have your email, please email your name to [email protected]. All of the previous bulletins can be accessed at our Lodge website at: www.paelks.com/elks503.html
