Record Label Logo Research

Page 2: Logo research

This logo is bold in simplistic black and white

The font of the logo is eye catching & looks fairly old fashioned, which links in with some of the genres of music that the label represents, including gothic rock and neoclassical dark wave.

The box around the letters of the company in the logo gives the logo a 1930s style (similar to that seen in the Great Gatsby image below), which is unusual and links in with the alternative theme that runs through to the genres of music in the label.

When designing a logo for the music label that will represent our artist, I think it will be useful to consider keeping the colours simple as seen here, and also keep the font bold & find some way for the font to link to our genres (indie-electro & art-pop) as that would best suit the genre, and ultimately the representation of our artist.

This logo is also in bold black and white, which creates a minimalist tone to the label. The font is, again, big

and bold, which makes the logo stand out while being able to read. The name ‘XL’ suggests that the label manages big musical acts, which is true in some cases as artists on the roster include Adele, Vampire Weekend and Radiohead. The simple fonts

and colours in this logo overall are effective in making it eye catching.

This logo is similar to the logo previous in way of colours and bold fonts, however is more simplistic than the other. The simplicity is a good element because it alludes to the fact that there is too wide of a range of genres on the label to be able to incorporate them all into the logo. This simplicity is something to consider when it comes to us designing our own.

The natural background colour of the logo paired with the white again creates a simple logo. The colours indicate that genres the label supports will include indie-folk etc.

The thin font stands out against the vast beige colour, making the name of the label easy to read.

The square box shape around the name makes it stand out, while the words being placed on top of each other according to word length makes it pleasing to read.

The use of colour in this logo is unusual compared to others I have seen (predominantly being black and white) which makes it stand out against those. I like the idea of incorporating colour into the logo as I think it does look unusual and would go well with the unusual brand of the artist.

The bold white of the label title is eye catching & draws attention.

The green circle in the center of the logo with relevant information inside is reminiscent of vinyls (as seen in the picture below) which is interesting & tells anyone looking at the logo that it is a label that represent artists that distribute their music through vinyls.

The colour of the background is not quite black, but rather a dark grey, which gives the logo a neutral look that pairs well with the green of the center.

This logo is, again, fairly unconventional as it is not the same as many others which are just basic black & white lettering. Because of this it is effective in giving the idea that the label supports unconventional artists. I think that this is a good thing & I will definitely considering doing something similar in my own logo design.

This logo again is a box shape, similar to others I have looked at.

The black and white colours make a bold statement against each other , which pairs well with font. The colour of the font alternates between white on black background for the ‘SUB’ and then black on white background for the ‘POP’.

The font is again bold and easy to read.

For me, the logo is reminiscent of the parental warning sign (seen below) that commonly is attached to CDs etc. that are explicit in content. Because of this resemblance I feel the logo gives the allusion that the label represents artists that also project this image of lack of censorship.

I think that the way the logo has been set out to almost resemble a parental advisory sign is interesting as it does allude to the kinds of artists the label represents, which makes the logo relevant to the label. I think that this is something to be considered when we design our logo, however I feel that using more colour would also be beneficial as there is a risk of the logo being monotonous.

The use of the varying shades of grey are unusual compared to most of the other logos seen.

The name of the label is pretty long and I feel that it could make it hard to remember. The label could have shortened it in order to keep it eye-catching. I also feel that the logo does not give anything away about what kinds of artists they represent, which could be another negative.

The lettering is bold again however is outlined which is unusual but stands out well.

The rectangular shape of the logo is unusual too.
