Many of you have been keeping up with the story of Dominga. If not, Dominga has become so popular, she even has her own Facebook Page and has been in a few articles from various newspapers in New York. Dominga was living in the woods in the Bronx for the first 11-12 years of her life, coming out at night to forage for food, per the neighbors. A kind and caring person saw Dominga walking the street one day on her way to work and started making phone calls to get someone to help, as the dog had an extremely large tumor on her stomach and leg, the size of a basketball!! No one offered to help catch Dominga except for our President, Linda. It took over 3 weeks to catch Dominga. Even with Linda knowing it would be difficult going from Suffolk County all the way into the Bronx, she still did what her heart told her to do, RESCUE! Linda traveled as often as 2 times a day to catch Dominga. Dominga was finally caught and was scheduled for immediate surgery. The surgery took place on June 9 th . The surgery was successful and the 17lb tumor was removed, but she wouldn't wake up from the anesthesia. She was transferred to an emergency hospital in critical condition. After many vet visits, an MRI, and exam by a neurologist, she was diagnosed with suffering brain damage from an unknown cause. The prognosis was very poor and euthanization was recommended. She would have episodes of paddling and crying, which the neurologist stated was her way of trying to interact with the environment. In Linda's heart, something told her to give her a bit more time. For 3 weeks, Linda and her family were by her side 24/7, administering hours a day, feeding her through a feeding tube, starting acupuncture and holistic medications, she started to wake up! The paddling episodes stopped, then she lifting her head, then she sat up!! Dominga, with the help and support of many people, is now eating on her own (actually very well and loves her food), has gained all her weight back, walks (although a bit unstedily), relieves herself outside, and knows when her family is around. She still can't see, she does hear, however. She is still has a long way to go, and we don't know if she will ever fully recover, but we love the amazing strength and determination she possesses! Please go to Dominga's Facebook Page to keep up with her recovery. Thanks to all of you for your support. Many of you have been keeping up with the story of Dominga. If not, Dominga has become so popular, she even has her own Facebook

The American Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals (ASPCA) and

the American Humane Association (AHA) have made the month of October National Adopt a Shelter Dog Month and Adopt a Dog Month, respectively. The names are slightly different, but the goal is the same — National Adopt a Shelter Dog Month and Adopt a Dog Month are both about getting as many great dogs as possible into the loving homes they deserve. Each year, millions of companion animals enter animal shelters nationwide. Sadly, 60% of dogs and 70% of cats are euthanized. We all want to change that because every dog and cat is special. A lot of rescue groups and shelters have many breeds, sizes and ages. Pets are amazing, supportive and heroic companions who can make a huge difference in your life. We encourage families looking for their new four-legged family members to do their research and visit their local shelter or rescue group instead of the local pet store.

Join us riding your hot rods, cars or

motorcycles in this charitable event taking

place on Sunday, September 27th, 2015. We

will be meeting at Almost Home Animal

Rescue, 1521 Ocean Avenue, Unit B6,

Bohemia, NY 11716.

Welcome, all, to Almost Home’s Newsletter. We are all so very excited to let everybody know about our happenings, events, and of course all the animals that found their Forever Home!

Almost Home Animal Rescue and Adoption, Inc. is a non-profit organization that was formed by a group of dedicated and compassionate volunteers with many years of experience. Almost Home maintains a no-kill policy towards animals and treats families that come to us with respect.

Our goal is to find each family a dog or cat that makes their home complete. We also help families to keep the pets they currently have. Our mission at Almost Home is to rescue and re-home unwanted and abandoned dogs and cats from private homes and municipal shelters, foster them in our own homes until we can place them into responsible, loving homes.

TRAINING WHEELS® is a non-judgmental community outreach program that brings the shelter into the community to try and prevent animals from being surrendered to already over-crowded animal shelters. We mostly focus on economically challenged areas providing pet education, medical assistance, free spay/neuter with transportation, proper shelter, tie outs and food assistance. Many of our families have outside dogs—mostly pitbulls. We provide education to provide these dogs with better qualities of life.

This week, on September 4th, is National Wildlife Day! National Wildlife Day is to raise

awareness for the number of endangered animals in the United States and Nationwide. It is also to

acknowledge the zoos, outstanding animal sanctuaries, farms and organizations for helping to preserve our wildlife and educate the public about conservation.

As you go on with your day today, take note of the different animals that you see. Even if they are domesticated, take a minute to think about where

they came from and what they would be like in the wild. Understand that each species on our planet serves a purpose and should be cared for and protected just as we would for our own pets!

.

.

Almost Home rescues many animals from municipal shelters and through our outreach program. Shelter animals live most of their time in a cage where

they are unable to fulfill their social needs. Many of our outreach dogs and cats live a life of neglect and abuse. Without foster homes, we cannot save the lives of countless animals, and continue our mission of building a more humane community.

Fostering provides the necessary house skills that a dog and cat needs in order to find its forever home such as crate training, housebreaking, basic obedience and socialization. In addition, a foster dog or foster cat will provide love and companionship without you having to make a long term commitment. When you foster, YOU become a vital part of animal rescue.

Fostering costs you nothing except time, love and patience. We provide everything you need to ensure your foster dog or foster cat succeeds in your home. Fostering is such a rewarding accomplishment. YOU become that foster's stepping stone to a loving, forever home. Whether you already have pets or not, there is a four legged friend who will fit your preference and lifestyle. We will evaluate and match you with the right pet!

In the end, your work will be rewarded. You may cry as you see your foster pet off to its forever home, but you will feel good knowing that YOU made a difference! YOU rescued that four legged friend and helped find its perfect home.

And when that is accomplished, you will have the opportunity to rescue another when the time is right for you.

Fostering is fun and very rewarding and it is an absolute necessity for any rescue organization. It is a tremendous, yet short-term commitment, but the love and gratitude you will receive from that foster is priceless.

WE NEED YOU! WE WILL TRAIN YOU!

Please consider making a difference in the lives of needy animals. We have many friendly, loving animals waiting to enter our re-homing program, but we don't have enough foster homes. Please help us before their time runs out.

To foster, please visit www.almosthomeli.org and fill out a foster application.

We have a great group of people on the Board of Directors who have been with Almost Home for many, many years now. I think it is time they get a little attention for all the work they put into saving, rescuing and re-home unwanted or abandoned animals. Linda is the President and Co-Founder of Almost Home since 2007. She is a dedicated and strong person with three jobs. She is the Operator for Almost Home, she is a full time working nurse and of course a full time wife and mother of two beautiful girls. She has had experience for over 20 years with Animal Rescue, she is Certified to operate Training Wheels Outreach Programs and is experienced in shelter animals with behavior, medical and temperament evaluation. Way to go Linda !

Jennifer is in charge of the Fundraising and Planning Events since 2009. She has been a Full Time volunteer since Almost Home began in 2007. She helps Plan Adoption Events throughout Long Island every month. She takes care of raising money so Almost Home can continue to rescue or re-home pets and to offer food, shelter and pet education for those families in need. Great Planning, Jenn!

Marion has been a dedicated volunteer with Almost Home since 2007. Marion is in charge of taking notes and sending out minutes and collecting agenda topics from other members. Her main responsibility and one of the most important ones is scheduling the Adoption Events! Marion is also a Volunteer with Training Wheels for a number of years. Keep up the good work, Marion!

Lou has been busy with Almost Home for a number of years. He plays a number of important roles with Almost Home. He helps run the Adoption Events with Marion and reviews the applicants’ qualifications with the adoption applications. Lou takes care of the home visits for our fostered animals being adopted to go to their forever home. He also organizes and re-orders the medication for the animals. Great Job, Lou!

Ashley has love and compassion for every animal she meets. As part of the Training Wheels program, Ashley is on the road every day rescuing animals and helping to make their lives better. She is outside in the rain, snow and sunshine educating and encouraging families in the communities to take care of their animals with food, water, medical care, getting them off their short tethers and chains and bring their pets indoors. Training Wheels is a community outreach program which encourages families to spay and neuter their animals. Once this is done, the animals receive free food every month, medical, dog houses, straw, leashes and collars. Ashley is there every day as the voice of the animals who otherwise would be silent. Great dedication, Ashley!

Kathy is the newest addition to our team. She started with Almost Home, June of 2013. Since then she has been involved with our Training Wheels Community Outreach Program and helps with our adoption events. Her latest contribution to Almost Home has been the job of Treasurer. She is a Certified QuickBooks Pro-Advisor and is Certified by the American Institute of Professional Bookkeepers. She has had her own bookkeeping service since 2005 and hopes to assist Almost Home with her accounting expertise. Thank you for all your help, Kathy !
