The Ellensburg State FFF fly fishing fair was even bigger and better this year. This show has the location and the interest to be the biggest fly fishing show in Washington. I attended a Presidents meeting hosted by Carl Johnson, the Washington FFF council president and club presidents from all parts of the state. Carl was looking for input on what the FFF state council can do to help clubs in the state. Most of the concerns were the same throughout the state. We all felt that we need better communications between the FFF and the state’s clubs. With open lines of communications, we would all be more up to date on issues and projects on the horizon that affect our sport. We also looked at having presidents meetings throughout the year to network what our clubs are working on and to network projects amongst clubs. WVFF Board Meeting Minutes, 7 May 2009

President Steve called the meeting to order at 7:10 Well-attended: Blue Lake was discussed. Smaller fish than last year. Chopaka was deemed very good. Minutes of last meeting: reviewed and approved. Treasurers Report, Al Smith. “Final” 2008 budget was reviewed and approved. The Banquet was a huge success. Costs were down and income was higher than last year. Committee reports. Membership. Eric Rainbolt. Has anyone seen my ax? Final membership list has been established and we have 80 paid Members. Programs, Gary Anderson. May’s presenter will be Dave Lambroughton from BC, Canada. He will present his trips to New Zealand Spring Creek fisheries and British Columbia Steelhead via beautiful photography. This promises to be a visual experience. June is to be determined. Outings. Richard Stone. Blue Lake was a huge success even though the fish were smaller. About 28 people attended and a dozen dogs. There will be a Dry Falls Sat event on the 23rd of May. Gary Anderson will again give a lakeside biology lesson on aquatic insects. This is a great part of this outing. On the 26 of May there will be a fly tying outing at the Chelan County PUD

building. Flies will be targeted for the Blue Lake Brown Drake and Damselflies. Find out full details at the May Meeting. Also, look elsewhere in this Paper for more info. Ghille. Gil Biles. Many books/DVD’s, etc have been borrowed and should be returned. DVD conversion is continuing. Publications, Nancy Howard. She reported she has info for the paper but is need of articles. By Law Committee, Joe Roy. Joe reported that after reviewing the By Laws, he and his committee are recommending that the Club change to a 501c(3) Corporation which means that a contribution can be itemized on your Federal Tax returns. The Board approved this after discussion and will bring it up to the general membership for approval. River Keepers, Richard Logan presented a description of the River Keeper Program. The intent is to establish some long-term data on the temperature and PH of the Columbia in the Wenatchee area. Tributaries are included. Volunteers are needed to collect data from river bound instrumentation once a month. Sites

along the river need to be determined that are accessible but safe from the wrong hands. If anyone is interested, contact Richard or Steve for more info. Aaron Penvose from the Washington Rivers Conservancy spoke about the Conservancy’s goals and functions. El Lake was discussed in great detail. A local landowner has water rights, which is drawing, down the lake and coupled with the aerator not working there is not fish in this previously great lake. The Club has been asked to help with a new aerator and after the discussion the Board voted to pledge $500 to help pay the cost of a new Aerator, cost of $3000, if the Lake can be deemed a reliable fishery. The Board also put a deadline of end of 2010 such that the Pledge goes away if it is not a viable fishery by then. Ellensburg Conclave, President Steve discussed his attendance at the Presidents meeting with the FFF and what they could do for us. He also announced that Pat Herdt has been selected to be a board Member at large and Don Bolstad has been selected as the Vice President for Conservation--quite a big deal. Way to go Pat and Don. Scholarship. Steve identified a young adult that has a desire to go to the Fly Fishing Academy in Lakewood and the Board voted to donate $250 towards his tuition.

Steve than adjourned the meeting at 9:30.

WVFF General Meeting Minutes,

16 April 2009

Wet Fly began with Gordy West demonstrating some expertise on tying Chironomids.

We had an excellent, well-attended dinner at 6:30.

President Steve called the business meting to order at 7:30. Steve thanked Gordy for being the Fly tier demonstrator and asked for volunteers to fill this role for future meetings. Steve spoke of the Fly Fishing Class now underway at the College. Gary Anderson outlined the class that he and Tom Whiteside are again teaching and asked that some of the members of the class that were at the meeting to stand and introduce themselves. Steve stated that the Club’s By-Laws are under review by the Committee headed by Past President Joe Roy along with Gary Anderson and Don Bolstad. Joe Roy announced that audio tapes in MP3 Format are now available for several of our members

that have been either fly tying demonstrators and that of Gary Anderson’s lakeside lecture on aquatic biology and how flies should be tied to mimic the insects. An audiotape will be made of this evening’s program also. Outings. This Saturday will be Lenice Lake hosted by Al Smith. Next weekend will be the Blue Lake Special hosted by Gordy West. Also, on Tuesday May 26th at 5:30 there will be another fly tying “outing” at the Chelan PUD. Then on May 1 and 2 the Ellensburg “Conclave” will be held. Our Club will be showing 50 kids how to tie flies. Help is needed so if you can tie a wooly bugger CALL Pat Herdt and offer your help. Conservation, Don Bolstad. He told the club of about the Pebble Mine in Alaska near Bristol Bay where a company is planning to construct a mine and the local sportsmen are trying to fight it as it may jeopardize some fisheries. They are asking for some help to fight it. Fred Kunzmann stated that there would be a Wenatchee River cleanup the last weekend in June. Coverage will be from Leavenworth to the mouth focusing on Cashmere. Doctor Steve Aguilu announced that the State Committee for Salmon and Steelhead he is on is getting started and if anyone has any input to give him a call or send him and email at [email protected]. The focus is statewide and covers watershed issues and management of hatcheries and their impact to wild fish. This could be very far reaching and have some impact to our fisheries. Program. Gary Anderson then introduced Steve Joyce Co-Owner of Red’s Fly Shop on the Yakima River. Steve gave an excellent presentation on the Yakima River about the uniqueness of the Yakima and went into great detail on how to fish the river during all of the seasons. Included were when and how to fish with Streamers, nymphs and dry flies. If you weren’t there, you missed a great presentation.

Steve Olson adjourned the meeting at 9:00 PM.

Respectfully Submitted, Rene Paul, Secretary

The annual Ellensburg Fly Fishing Fair was held May 1-2 at the Ellensburg Fair Ground. Washington State Council Federation of Fly Fishers, (WSCFFF) sponsored this event.

I wish to express my sincere appreciation to all our WVFF tiers who took time from their busy schedules to volunteer their tying skills to teach

young high school student who attended our fly-tying session on Friday May 1. Due to budget cuts in some schools, only fifteen (15) students from Easton High School were granted attendance out of the 50 students from the Kittitas Valley that we had expected. Thanks goes to Cece Budda, their teacher, who received a grant from a wildlife group for the students’ fishing and tying instruction. The student classes were well organized with thanks to the Council volunteers. Both the tying table instruction and the related classes were successful.

My thanks is extended to those who helped me on Friday and Saturday: Don Bolstad, Steve Olsen, Irv Conner, Tom Whiteside, Larry McCracken, Rene Paul, Eric Rainbolt, Gil Biles, Fred Kunzmann. If I missed any individual, I apologize.

The WVFF was well represented at this event with demo-tiers. Cam Thomas and Dick Nicklas. Also attending were Bruce Merighi, Gordy West and Gordi Northrup.

The WCFFF display board featured large photos of WVFF’s conservation team setting signs at Spring Hill Reservoir. These signs accommodate both English and Spanish speakers. Also featured were Steve Olsen, and Ralph Jordan shown with our kids’ tying session at Gary Anderson’s “bug booth” at the Leavenworth Salmon Festival.

Our thanks again to the EFF for the invitation to be a part of this very special event. Thanks to all the WVFF members who make this club a productive and enjoyable organization.

Respectfully submitted Pat Herdt, First Vice President
