A convenient boiler control for LOOS hot waterboilers was developed on the basis of an SPCautomation device which has proved successful inindustry. All the regulating and control functionsare integrated in an efficient, programmable con-trol. These include the controls for boiler output,water level, desalting and blow-down, plus thecontrols for the Economiser or superheaters. Nomatter whether the boiler is operated with a gas,oil or dual burner, stepped or modulating, withmechanical or electric network, LOOS BOILERCONTROL LBC can be used for all systems.
Display and operation are conveniently supportedby TFT colour displays with a touch-sensitive inter-face. These are available in 8" or, as an option, 10"
versions. The symbols, graphics and user guidan-ce are designed in accordance with the latest deve-lopments in ergonomics and usability. All availablecontrol and regulating functions can be accessedintuitively, and actual and setpoint values can beshown in the colour display or changed. The inte-grated operating signal management system cap-tures and logs operating states before shut-downon faults occurs. Important process data are storedat defined intervals and can be presented on thedisplays in the form of clear graphs. Analysing datais simply child's play. The connection of higher-level technical management systems via PROFI-BUS DP or the provision of routers so that theLoos Teleservice can be used are just two of themany options offered by this system.

The designDesigned and dimensioned according to clearlydefined priorities: furnace size, radiant and con-vection heating surface, steam space and waterspace volume are ideally matched and dimensio-ned down to the smallest detail. Radiant and con-vection heating surfaces act in unison to achievevery rapid water circulation and accelerate themovement of the steam bubbles to the steamspace.Smooth heat transfer ensures that the heat genera-ted by the fuel is converted into steam quickly andwithout stress on the material of the boiler. Theflexible ends are rigidly anchored by the full-length flame tube. All high-pressure boilers areequipped with additional gusset stays for uniformload distribution. The front door, hinged right orleft, provides easy access for boiler and burner ins-pection. High-quality mineral wool mat insulationcovering the entire boiler body and special insula-ting materials in the front door cut radiation lossesto an insig-nificant minimum. The rigid base framereduces the specific ground pressure. All in all aconvincingly good result.

In the higher performance range, the tried andtested three-pass principle dominates. The idealpossibilities for developing high-performancesteam generators with outstanding characteristicswere recognized and rigorously put into practiceby LOOS INTERNATIONAL already in the early50ies. The UNIVERSAL boiler was designed toperfection for generating saturated and superhea-ted steam in the 1,250 -28,000 kg/h performancerange. EC type testing according to the PressureVessels Directive provided for all capacities andpressure levels (CE).The dimensions of flame tube, smoke tube bank,water space and steam space have been thermo-dynamically optimized for flexible performance.Radiant and convection heating surfaces act in uni-son to achieve very fast water circulation andaccelerate the movement of the steam bubbles tothe steam space. Smooth heat transfer ensures thatthe heat generated by the fuel is converted intosteam quickly and without stress on the material ofthe boiler.

The designThe LOOS three-pass patent granted in 1952forms the basis of the outstanding, still todayunsurpassed success of this series. The flame tube(1st pass) and two smoke tube banks (2nd and3rd pass) as well as the wet-back rear reversingchamber are integrated in the boiler body in anideal arrangement. The laterally positioned flametube and the horizontal rear- and vertical frontheating gas reversal result in the largest possibleradiant and convection heat transfer surface withthe largest steam space and the smallest externalmeasurements. The flexible ends are firmlyanchored by the big, full-length flame tube andjoined to the boiler casing by a large, LOOS-specific number of gusset stays for even loaddistribution.
Superheated steam is generated by a superheatermodule. Dimensioned for the required superheat-ing temperature and simply placed on the frontreversing chamber. By means of a bypass damperthe superheated steam temperature can be keptconstant over a wide load range. The smoke tubesections remain freely and easily accessiblethrough the swivelling reversing chamber door.
The high-quality mineral wool mat insulation ofthe entire boiler body and of the superheatermodule ensure that radiation losses are negligible.The sturdy base frame reduces the specific groundpressure.

The UNIVERSAL double flame tube/smoke tubeboiler is available for output values from 18,000 to55,000 kg/h with dimensions which allow trans-port as a ready-to-connect unit. This double flametube/smoke tube boiler was developed by LOOSINTERNATIONAL already in the 50ies and builtwith separate furnace gas passages for operationalso with one firing system. The three-passprinciple with rear furnace gas reversing chamberaccommodated in the water space was patentedin 1952. The economizer and superheater can beeasily upgraded by the addition of modules. ECtype testing according to the Pressure VesselsDirective provided for all capacities and pressurelevels (CE).The dimensions of flame tubes, smoke tube bank,water space and steam space are thermodynami-cally optimized. Radiant and convection heatingsurfaces, combined with the possibility of singleflame tube operation, provide special flexibility. Rapid water circulation and smooth heat transferensure that the heat generated by the fuel isconverted into steam quickly and without stresson the material of the boiler.

The designThe LOOS Three-Pass patent from the year 1952forms the basis for the outstanding and so farunsurpassed success of this series. The specialdesign measures which neutralize the tensileforces in single flame-tube operation are decisivefor long-term stability. The flame tubes are inser-ted through the complete thickness of the frontand rear ends and firmly welded all round theircircumference. The wet-back rear furnace gasreversing chamber is separated by a water-carry-ing, stabilizing furnace wall and also insertedthrough the rear end. The large pressure reliefsurfaces with all-round ligaments, together withthe reversing chamber ceiling-to-floor bracing,neutralize the stresses.Water circulation and heattransfer are effectively assisted by guide sectionson the boiler floor and are further accelerated byflow passages between the flame tubes and theside-by-side smoke tube sections.
Superheated steam is generated with superheatermodules which are attached to the front reversingchamber. Using bypass dampers, the superheatedsteam temperature can be kept constant over awide load range.An economizer is simply placed on top of the fluegas collecting chamber and does not require anadditional foundation.The swivelling reversing chamber doors keep thesmoke tube sections freely and easily accessible.

The single flame tube operation permitted by theTÜV (German technical inspection association)allows unrestricted fully automatic operation withone or both burners. The control range is doubled and each low-load phase is run with one burner with a gain in efficiency. With dual burners, a fuel changeover without boiler shut-down and parallel operation withdifferent fuels are possible.

The LOOS Quick steam generator is designed forminimum water content, modest overall dimen-sions and quickest possible service availability.Arranging the two-layer special-purpose heatingcoil in a furnace-gas tight steel sheet casing makesit possible for LOOS Quick steam generators toachieve effective three-pass operation with a largeintensive heat-transfer surface. A casing insulationwith 100 mm thick mineral wool mats underneathinsulation protection panelling ensures minimumradiation losses and provides protection againstaccidental contact.
A three-piston feed water pump with suctionboost pump provides the performance-relatedquantity of feed water.

The flue gas discharge from old and new steam boilers contains a considerable heat potential at ahigh temperature level. The LOOS Economizerwith high-efficiency secondary heat-transfer surfa-ces utilises this heat potential for feedwaterpreheating and enhances boiler efficiency by 5-7
percentage points. Flue gas losses are reduced tobelow 5%. The new LOOS ECO systems for newand old plants increase user benefit through areduction of the amortisation period. They meetofficial regulations for flue gas losses and reducestress on the environment.
