The plot summary -:A sign from the world of grownups:-

As the boys sleep that night, two military airplanes battle fiercely in the sky above the island but no one sees the flashes or hear the explosions. One of the planes is destroyed drifting down to the island. The body of its pilot bound tightly in a parachute which carries the body to rest at the top of the mountain next to the signal fire but due to the changes of the wind, the parachute slides up the mountain.

The beast:- The twins Sam and Eric are sent on a duty to watch the signal fire but they fall asleep. In the darkness of the early morning, as the twins wake up and go to find wood, they see the dead pilot and mistaken the corpse for the beast so they flee back down to the beach to awaken Ralph.

Dreaming of home:- In the midst of a comfortable dream in which Ralph was back to where he came from, feeding the ponies with sugar over the garden wall, he is awoken to hear the beast story from the twins first with doubt but then with fear and terror especially after seeing Eric’s face which is cut by creepers which also seems to be a vivid evidence of a beast attack.

Calling for an assembly:- Ralph calls for a meeting, sending Sam & Eric to call others from the next shelters while spreading the dreadful news. At the meeting, the conch is handed to the twins to say what they got. The twins say that they saw the beast with their eyes with its head moving, its eyes, teeth and claws. In the end, they come up with a decision to explore a section of the island they had not been to yet in order to hunt the beast leaving piggy behind to look after the littluns.

The castle:- They reach a place with a pink rock cliff which Jack calls “ A castle”. They think of it as a possible location of the beast’s hideout. Ralph as a leader volunteers to search the castle and Jack follows him but they find no beast. There, the boys become so excited forgetting the real mission they come there for. Ralph argues them to move on for the sake of rekindling the signal fire ,but they pay him little minds. Finally Ralph becomes extremely angry and orders them harshly to make certain

that there is no beast then the group continues on their way leaving their new found fortress behind.

The conflict-:The external conflict :-Jack vs. Ralph:-Jack questions Ralph decisions and leadership by: Trying to break the rules:Jack claims that the

conch no longer matters, talking without holding the conch ’’Conch, conch we don’t need the conch anymore, we know who ought to say things’’. Jack announces his rebellion against the rules.

Always taking the opposite direction of Ralph’s.Each of the boys want to track the beast for his own reason; Jack wants to kill the beast and Ralph wants to relight the signal fire to preserve hope for rescue.

Jack vs. Piggy-:

Again Jack mocks Piggy and makes fun of him. Once Piggy expresses his fear from the beast to Ralph

“I mean… how about us? Suppose the beast comes when you’re all way. I can’t see proper, and if I get scared” Piggy said.

“you’re always scared” Jack broke in.

Simon vs. the others-:

“other people could stand up and speak to an assembly without the dreadful feeling of the pressure

of personality, could say what the they would as though they were to only one person”. Here, Simon recalls his inability to express what he knew about the nature of the beast as he perceived, but every time he warns others, he’s always met with ridicule though he seems to be the most insightful one of them.

Savagery vs. Civilization-:

As Jack rejects the rules, it seems as if Jack might take over the leadership but Ralph wins everyone to his side by asking if they want to be rescued or not. Most of the boys still prefer to be

rescued over savagery.

Dreaming of home also shows that the boys prefer civilization over savagery; they want to go back to their homes, to their families and to their innocent nature.

The internal conflict:-

The conflict within the boys themselves in their minds whether to believe the existence of the beast or not.

Symbolism-: The parachute: The arrival of

sign, hope to be rescued.

The dead soldier “ the beast” : adult civilization also hides savagery within.

Simon : religion and rationality.

Rejecting the conch: there’s no longer democracy.

Main Themes-:FEAR:- The boys are a afraid of the beast but it isn’t existed, only their behaviors is what brings the beast into existence and the more savagery the boys act, the more real the beast seems to become.

Religion:-” Simon, walking in front of Ralph, felt a flicker of incredulity a beast with claws that scratched, that sat on a mountain top, that left no tracks and yet was not fast enough to catch Samneric”.

Page 16: Lord Of The Flies By :- William Golding. Chapter six BEAST FROM AIR Presented by: Fatma Qawwash. Dema El Baghdadi. Zeinab Abu Alsebah. Dr.Sami Breem.

“I don’t believe in beast”. That what Simon said being skeptic of the beast story and it seems that he’s the only one who reaches the realization that they fear the beast because it exists within each of them. If they had listened to him, they would have known that their fear is groundless but as long as religion is disregarded, the more savage the boys will be.
