clinical research and 2015 Vanderbilt Research Forum Best Poster Prize. She is the
recipient of an NIH T32 grant award, a Vanderbilt Faculty Scholars Research award, an

As a postdoctoral fellow and now junior faculty mentor under the co-mentorship of Drs.

of long term mortality in ARDS. She is the recipient of an NIH K23 award.

Ms. DesPrez is studying the use of the SpO2/FiO2 as a substitute for the PaO2/FIO2 ratio

As a postdoctoral fellow with Dr. Ware, Dr. Wang studied the role of the alveolar
epithelium in modulating the intra-alveolar activation of protein C, an endogenous

Ms. Browne’s research focused on developing a new method to measure the rate of
alveolar fluid clearance in anesthetized piglets.

2005-2007 Minerva Covarrubias, M.D., Formerly Assistant Professor of Medicine and Director of
Critical Care Medicine, Meharry Medical College, Nashville TN, now in private practice.
As a postdoctoral fellow in Dr. Ware’s lab, Dr. Covarrubias received an NHLBI funded
supplement for diversity in biomedical research to fund her lung transplant studies as
well as a 2006 American Thoracic Society Minority Trainee Travel Award.
2006-2008 Eric Austin, M.D. Associate Professor of Pediatrics, Vanderbilt University.
Under the co-mentorship of Dr. Ware and Dr. James Loyd, Dr. Austin’s research focused
on the discovery and validation of novel biomarkers of familial and idiopathic pulmonary
hypertension that might be used for non-invasive early detection. He received NIH K12
and K23 awards and a Vanderbilt University Clinical Research Scholars program award.
His research has been recognized with a Junior Researcher/ Investigator Travel Award
and a Junior Investigator Excellence Award: ‘1st Place’ at the 4th World Symposium on
Pulmonary Hypertension 2008, as well as an American Thoracic Society Travel Award.
2006-2008 Richard Fremont, M.D., Associate Professor of Medicine, Meharry Medical College
Dr. Fremont was a postdoctoral fellow in Dr. Ware’s lab. During his training he
developed a biomarker panel for diagnosis of ARDS in patients with severe trauma.
Working with Dr. Ware he also received an award from the Vanderbilt GME office to
develop an online curriculum for teaching in the Intensive Care Unit.
2007-2008 Jonathan Kropski, M.D., Assistant Professor of Medicine, Vanderbilt University
During a 4-month research elective during his 4th
year of medical school, Dr. Kropski
investigated the release of Clara Cell Specific Protein into the airspaces and plasma of
patients with acute lung injury. His abstract submission was one of only three clinical
abstracts chosen for oral presentation at the Vanderbilt Research Forum in April 2008.
2007-2009 Hollis O’Neal, M.D. Assistant Professor of Medicine, LSU, Baton Rouge
Dr. O’Neal’s research focused on the role that pre-hospitalization exposure to statin
therapy has on the risk of developing acute lung injury in the setting of risk factors
including sepsis and pneumonia. His research was recognized with an American
Thoracic Society PAR Member ARDS Foundation Travel Award.
2007-2009 Fred Bossert. Obstetrics and Gynecology Resident, UT Chattanooga
Mr. Bossert studied new methods for singleplex and multiplex assays of diagnostic and
prognostic biomarkers for clinical use in acute lung injury and acute kidney injury.
2008-2012 Carolyn Calfee, MD, Associate Professor of Medicine, UCSF
Under the co-mentorship of Dr. Michael Matthay and Dr. Ware, Dr. Calfee developed an
extensive research program focused on biomarkers of ARDS and the effect of cigarette
smoking on the risk of ARDS that has been funded by an NIH K23 award and several
NIH R01 awards.
2008-2009 Blake Curtis, Radiology resident, University of Tennessee Memphis
Mr. Curtis’s project focused on validating a chest radiographic scoring system to quantify
the degree of pulmonary edema.
2009 Frank Qian, College Student.
Frank participated in the Vanderbilt Center for Science Outreach
Summer Internship Program. His project focused on the effect of statins on alveolar
epithelial tissue factor expression.

2010-2012 Yosaf Zeyed, M.D., Cardiovascular anesthesia fellow, University of Miami.
Dr. Zeyed studied the role of circulating microRNA as a biomarker and indicator of
pathogenesis of clinical acute lung injury. He was the recipient of a Vanderbilt Institute
for Clinical and Translational Research award to fund his research and completed his
MSCI training under Dr. Ware’s supervision.
2010-2012 Jennifer Clune, M.D., private practice, Dayton, Ohio.
Dr. Clune studied the role of tissue factor deletion in lung epithelium and myeloid cells
in the pathogenesus of acute lung injury.
2009-2012 Sara Sebag, Ph.D. Research Scientist, University of Iowa
Dr. Sebag studied the effect of cyclic mechanical strain in vitro and in vivo on
mechanisms of fibrin deposition in acute lung injury. Dr. Sebag was the recipient of an
NIH T32 training award.
2012 Andrew Taliaferro. Medical Student, Harvard Medical School
Mr. Taliaferro studied the relationship between organ donor smoking and physiologic
outcomes in the resected human lung including the degree of pulmonary edema and the
rate of alveolar epithelial fluid clearance.
2012-13 Devon Paul, M.D. Pulmonary and Critical Care fellow, Duke University
Dr. Paul studied causes of long term mortality in survivors of sepsis and ARDS.
2012-13 Gregory Shemancik, Undergraduate Student, Allegheny University
Mr. Shemancik spent two summers in the lab studying the effect of free hemoglobin on
lung epithelial cells in culture.
2003-2013 Julie A. Bastarache, M.D., Assistant Professor of Medicine, Vanderbilt University
Dr. Bastarache’s work as a postdoctoral fellow and now faculty member has focused on
how the human alveolar epithelium can initiate the extrinsic coagulation cascade through
the expression of tissue factor in response to an inflammatory stimulus. She is the
recipient of a Vanderbilt Physician Scientist Development Award, an NIH BIRCWH K12
award, an NIH loan repayment award, an NIH K08 award and NIH R01 funding.
2005-2013 Timothy Girard M.D., Associate Professor, University of Pittsburgh
Under the co-mentorship of Dr. Ware and Dr. Wes Ely during his fellowship training and
fellow-to-faculty transition, Dr. Girard studied biomarkers of delirium and long term
cognitive dysfunction in critically ill patients. He has received the Vanderbilt Physician
Scientist Development Award, a Hartford Geriatric Health Outcomes Research Scholars
Award, and an NIH K23 award.
2006-2013 Edward Siew, M.D., Associate Professor of Medicine, Division of Nephrology
Under the co-mentorship of Dr. Ware and Dr. Alp Ikizler during his fellowship training
and fellow-to-faculty transition, Dr. Siew’s research focused on the discovery and
validation of novel biomarkers of acute kidney injury in critically ill patients. Dr. Siew
received a Vanderbilt Clinical Research Scientist Award to fund his transition from

2010–2014 David R. Janz, M.D., Assistant Professor of Medicine, LSU New Orleans
Dr. Janz was a postdoctoral fellow with Dr. Ware. He studied the effect of cell-free
hemoglobin on organ injury in sepsis and critical illness. He received multiple grants
from the Vanderbilt Institute for Clinical and Translational Research to fund his projects
and was the recipient of an American Thoracic Society International Conference Travel
Award and an NIH T32 Training Grant award.
2011-2015 Rupal Shah, MD. Assistant Professor of Medicine, UCSF
As a postdoctoral fellow under co-mentorship of Dr. Jason Christie and Dr. Ware, Dr.
Shah studied biomarkers for diagnosis and prediction of primary graft dysfunction after

2013- 2014 Wei (Peter) Chen, MD, Critical Care Physician, Taiwan.
Dr. Chen was a visiting scientist in Dr. Ware’s laboratory. He studied the utility of the
SpO2/FIO2 ratio compared to the PaO2/FIO2 ratio for diagnosis of ARDS.

Dr. Russell studied the effect of hyperoxia during trauma resuscitation on clinical
outcomes during his internal medicine residency.
2012- 2014. Cameron Upchurch, Emergency Medicine Resident, University of Michigan.
During medical school, Dr. Upchurch studied the effect of cell-free hemoglobin on lung
epithelial cells in culture. He was a finalist for the 2014 Vanderbilt Research Forum
Basic Science Award and has received the Vanderbilt Medical Scholars award.
2013 Ma Li, MD, PhD, Vice Head of Critical Care Medicine, Wuxi City, China
Dr. Ma Li was a visiting physician scientist in Dr. Ware’s laboratory. She studied the
effect of bleomycin-induced acute lung injury on tissue factor expression in the mouse
lung.
2013 –2015 Hiromasa Nagata, M.D., Attending Anesthesiologist, Keio University, Japan.
Dr. Nagata developed a human model of acute lung injury in isolated perfused human
lungs obtained from organ donors. He received an award from the Vanderbilt Institute of
Clinical and Translational Research to fund his research project.
2013-2105 Sharidan Parr, M.D, Clinical Research Instructor, Vanderbilt University
As a postdoctoral fellow under the co-mentorship of Dr. Siew and Dr. Ware, Dr. Parr
studied biomarkers for early identification of acute kidney injury. She is the recipient of
a Vanderbilt Bioinformatics Fellowship award.
2014-2015 Liang Luo, M.D., Ph.D., Attending Physician, Nanjing Medical University School of
Medicine, Wuxi City, China. As a visiting scientist in Dr. Ware’s laboratory, Dr. Luo
studied clinical characteristics and clinical outcomes of ARDS due to direct versus
indirect mechanisms of lung injury.

Center. As a medical student, Ms. Murphy studied the utility of syndecan-1 as a
biomarker of ARDS and severity of endothelial injury in patients with severe sepsis.
2015-2017 Melinda Paul, B.S., former medical Student, Meharry Medical College
Ms. Paul studied mechanisms of free-hemoglobin associated acute kidney injury in sepsis
using renal tubular epithelial cells in culture and a mouse model of acute peritonitis. She
is the recipient of a Vanderbilt Medical Scholars award and an NIH NHLBI Diversity
Supplement.

As an undergraduate and after his first year of medical school Dr. Botschner worked with
Dr. Ware on various research projects including the effect of cell-free hemoglobin on cell

than a GABAergic agent (propofol) will increase days alive without delirium or coma, improve 90-day survival,
decrease long-term cognitive impairment, and reduce the pro-inflammatory cytokine cascade following sepsis.
