THE FIFTH OF MAY: This evening the Dodgers play the first

contest of a three-game road series in San Diego, before heading

back up the I5 Freeway for a three-game home series against the

Pirates at Dodger Stadium Monday-Wednesday. Los Angeles

took three of four from the Padres in the season’s opening series,

outscoring the Friars 27-10. The Boys in Blue are 17-11 at

PETCO Park since the start of the 2014 campaign. Following the

quirk in the schedule, the Dodgers will embark on a seven-game

road trip to Denver and San Francisco.

The Dodgers went 11-8 against the Padres last season

and have not lost the season series to San Diego since

going 8-10 in 2010. Since the start of the 2015 campaign,

the Dodgers divisional record against the Padres is

among the best in the National League:

NL, Best Record vs. Division Opponent – Since 2015

Washington Nationals vs. Braves 32-9 (.780)

Chicago Cubs vs. Reds 30-11 (.732)

New York Mets vs. Phillies 30-14 (.682)

Los Angeles Dodgers vs. Padres 28-14 (.667)

St. Louis Cardinals vs. Brewers 30-15 (.667)

The Dodgers are 6-4 in their last 10 games on cinco de

mayo. The club did not play on the Mexican holiday in

2004, 2011 or 2016.

MAEDA IN AMERICA: Dodger starter Kenta Maeda is set to

make his sixth start of the season tonight on the heels of his best

outing of 2017 last Friday night, in which he allowed two runs

and five hits while walking just one against the Phillies at Dodger

Stadium. Maeda also struck out a season-high eight batters while

making 101 pitches. The right-hander is 2-2 in five-career starts

against the Padres, but 0-1 in 2017 after a loss on April 4 (5.0

innings, 6 H, 3 R). At PETCO Park, the native of Japan is 1-1

with a 4.20 ERA (7 ER/15.0 IP) and 14 strikeouts in three starts,

including his Major League debut, when he fired 6.0 scoreless

innings on April 6, 2016.

This season, Maeda has been lights out when facing the

leadoff batter in an inning:

GOT YOUR BACK: The Dodger bullpen finally bent on

Wednesday, losing to the Giants in extra-innings, but the group

still ranks among the NL’s best in ERA (3.15, 34 ER/97.0 IP, 2nd),

opponents’ batting average (.228, 4th), WHIP (1.22, 4th), strikeouts

(114, 2nd), strikeout-to-walk ratio (3.17, 1st) and fielding

independent pitching (2.55, 1st).

THAT’S ONE WAY TO STOP HIM: Dodger third baseman

Justin Turner went 0-for-3 on Wednesday and was hit by a pitch

for the seventh time this season, which is tied for first in the Major

Leagues with Anthony Rizzo and Josh Harrison. Turner has hit

safely in 17 of his last 19 games, batting .386 (27-for-70) with

seven runs, six doubles, a home run and 11 RBI since April 13.

Turner leads the NL in doubles (11, 2nd MLB), while leading all

of baseball with a .413 (26-for-63) average vs. right-handed

pitching. The California native also ranks in the NL’s top 10 in

batting average (.374, 3rd), hits (37, 6th), on-base percentage

(.438, 6th) and multi-hit games (11, T-6th).

AND SO IT GOES…: Prior to the game tonight, the Dodgers

placed first baseman Adrián González on the 10-day disabled

list for the first time in his 14-year Major League career with right

elbow soreness. Gonzalez had played 1,774 games without a trip

to the DL which was the most among active players. In his place,

the club reinstated outfielder Joc Pederson, who was suffering

from a right groin strain. Pederson went 1-for-7 with three walks

in three games for Single-A Rancho Cucamonga during his rehab

stint. Gonzalez was hitting .255 with 11 RBI in 29 games for Los

Angeles this season.

While they may be foreign to Gonzalez, a trip to the

disabled list in 2017 is nothing new to the Dodgers:

TOLESY!: Dodger outfielder Andrew Toles has been on fire

over the last week, batting .423 (11-for-26) with two homers, five

RBI, eight runs scored and two doubles during his seven-game

hitting streak that dates to April 27. In that time, Toles ranks fifth

in the NL in average and is tied for third in runs scored while Los

Angeles has posted a 5-2 record. Toles’ on-base percentage is

.444 during the run, despite not having drawn a walk.

CAN’T STOP CODY: Cody Bellinger went 0-for-4 Wednesday

night, just his third hitless game since joining the club on April

25. The rookie first baseman/outfielder is hitting .303 (10-for-33)

with three home runs, five RBI, a double and a triple in nine

games. The Dodgers are 6-3 in those games and 5-1 when

Bellinger collects a hit.

MENDING: Dodger starter Rich Hill threw 29 pitches in a rehab

start for Single-A Rancho Cucamonga last night and then another

30 pitches with an up and down in the bullpen. Hill has been on

the disabled list with a finger blister since April 17.

Logan Forsythe experienced some tightness in his right

hamstring during a rehab stint Wednesday night and is

undergoing further evaluation. Forsythe hit the DL on

April 19 with a fracture of his right great toe.

ALMOST HOME AGAIN: The Dodgers take on the Pirates for

three games this Monday-Wednesday and the first 40,000

ticketed fans at Monday’s contest will receive a Dodger chips and
