    Positive Answers with ya or iyaPositive Answers with ya or iya To give a positive answer in Indonesian, we can use the word ya. A: Anda wartawan?

    B: Ya.YesOften people say iya to emphasize or confirm an answer. Iya can be used

    Negative answers with tidak,bukan or belum

    To give a negative answer in Indonesian, we need to choose between threewords: tidak, bukan or belum

    Bukan is used to negate a noun.

    A: Ini bukumu? Is this your book? B: Bukan.

    No, its not. A: Nama anda Raymond? Is your name Raymond? B: Bukan. No, its not.

    Belum means not yet and is used to indicate that something is not yetdone.

    Leni: Nia, kamu sudah makan? Nia have you eaten? Nia: Belum. No, not yet. Belum can be used to answer the Have you ever.? type of question. A: Apakah anda pernah ke Indonesia? Have you ever been to Indonesia?

    B: Belum. No, I havent. (No, not yet.) A: Kamu pernah makan durian? Have you ever eaten durian? B: Belum No I havent. (no, not yet)

    Belum means not yet and is used to indicate that something is not yetdone.

    questions with raised intonation and apa(kah), and giving positive answers with ya and

    negative answers with tidak or bukan or belum. The questions can only be ones that require a yes or no answer or not yet.

    Positive answers with mau,sudah, boleh or bisa

    Mau, sudah, boleh and bisa are used in answers to questions that alsocontain them. Mau expresses a want or wish; sudah indicates that an action

    has been completed (the opposite of belum); and boleh shows permission;bisa shows capability or permission, depending on the context. When used aspermission, bisa means the same as boleh. These words are sometimespreceded by ya or iya when used as an answer.

    A: Mau makan? Do you want to eat? (Note the absence of you) B: Iya, mau. Yes, I do A: Kamu sudah mandi? Have you bathed?

    To emphasize a positive answer, we can add the word saja after mau, bolehor bisa (but not after sudah).

    A: Boleh makan kuenya? Can I eat the cake? (Note the absence of I) B: Ya, boleh saja. Yes, of course A: Mau jalan-jalan? Do you want to go for a walk? (Note the absence of you) B: Ya, mau saja. Yes of course It is common to further emphasize the answer by reduplicating the answer
