Third Sunday in Ordinary Time January 24, 2021

Entrance Antiphon Sing a new song to the Lord; sing to the Lord, all the earth.

In his presence are majesty and splendor, strength and honor in his holy place.

Psalm 25 Teach me your ways, O Lord.

Glory to God Glory to God in the highest,

and on earth peace to people of good will. We praise you, we bless you, we adore you,

we glorify you, we give you thanks for your great glory,

Lord God, heavenly King, O God, almighty Father. Lord Jesus Christ, Only Begotten Son,

Lord God, Lamb of God, Son of the Father, you take away the sins of the world,

have mercy on us; you take away the sins of the world,

receive our prayer; you are seated at the right hand of the Father,

have mercy on us. For you alone are the Holy One,

You alone are the Lord, You alone are the Most High,

Jesus Christ, with the holy Spirit,

in the glory of God the Father, Amen.

Jonah 3:1-5, 10

The word of the LORD came to Jonah, saying: “Set out for the great city of Nineveh, and announce to it the message that I will tell you.” So Jonah made ready and went to Nineveh, according to the LORD’S bidding. Now Nineveh was an enormously large city; it took three days to go through it. Jonah began his journey through the city, and had gone but a single day’s walk announcing, “Forty days more and Nineveh shall be destroyed, “ when the people of Nineveh believed God; they proclaimed a fast and all of them, great and small, put on sackcloth.

When God saw by their actions how they turned from their evil way, he repented of the evil that he had threatened to do to them; he did not carry it out.

The word of the Lord. Thanks be to God.

Your ways, O LORD, make known to me; teach me your paths, Guide me in your truth and teach me, for you are God my savior. Remember that your compassion, O LORD, and your love are from of old. In your kindness remember me, because of your goodness, O LORD. Good and upright is the LORD; thus he shows sinners the way. He guides the humble to justice and teaches the humble his way.

I Corinthians 7:29-31

I tell you, brothers and sisters, the time is running out. From now on, let those having wives act as not having them, those weeping as not weeping, those rejoicing as not rejoicing, those buying as not owning, those using the world as not using it fully. For the world in its present form is passing away.

The word of the Lord. Thanks be to God.

Mark 1:14-20

After John had been arrested, Jesus came to Galilee proclaiming the gospel of God: “This is the time of fulfillment. The kingdom of God is at hand. Repent, and believe in the gospel.” As he passed by the Sea of Galilee, he saw Simon and his brother Andrew casting their nets into the sea; they were fishermen. Jesus said to them, “Come after me, and I will make you fishers of men.” Then they abandoned their nets and followed him. He walked along a little farther and saw James, the son of Zebedee, and his brother John. They too were in a boat mending their nets. Then he called them. So they left their father Zebedee in the boat along with the hired men and followed him. The Gospel of the Lord. Praise to you, Lord Jesus Christ.

The Liturgy of the Eucharist

Scripture readings and prayers provided by the United States Conference

of Catholic Bishops. Reprinted with permission.

May the Lord accept the sacrifice at your hands for the praise and glory of his name,

for our good and the good of all his holy Church.

Holy

Holy, Holy, Holy Lord God of hosts. Heaven and earth are full of your glory.

Hosanna in the highest. Blessed is he who comes in the

name of the Lord. Hosanna in the highest.

We proclaim your Death, O Lord, and profess your Resurrection

until you come again.

When we eat this Bread and drink this cup, we proclaim your Death, O Lord,

until you come again.

Save us, Savior of the world, for by your Cross and Resurrection

you have set us free.

Communion Antiphon Look toward the Lord and be radiant;

let your faces not be abashed.

Third Sunday in Ordinary Time January 24, 2021

Mystery of Faith Nicene Creed I believe in one God, the Father almighty, maker of heaven and earth, of all things visible and invisible. I believe in one Lord Jesus Christ, the Only Begotten Son of God, born of the Father before all ages. God from God, Light from Light, true God from true God, begotten not made consubstantial with the Father; through him all things were made. For us men and for our salvation he came down from heaven, and by the Holy Spirit was incarnate of the Virgin Mary, and became man. For our sake he was crucified under Pontius Pilate, he suffered death and was buried, and rose again on the third day in accordance with the Scriptures. He ascended into heaven and is seated at the right hand of the Father. He will come again in glory to judge the living and the dead and his kingdom will have no end. I believe in the Holy Spirit, the Lord, the giver of life, who proceeds from the Father and the Son, who with the Father and the Son is adored and glorified, who has spoken through the prophets. I believe in one, holy, catholic and apostolic Church. I confess one Baptism for the forgiveness of sins and I look forward to the resurrection of the dead and the life of the world to come. Amen.

Deliver us, Lord, we pray… the coming of our savior, Jesus Christ.

For the kingdom, the power and the glory are yours now and forever.

Lamb of God Lamb of God, you take away the sins of the world,

have mercy on us. Lamb of God, you take away the sins of the world,

have mercy on us. Lamb of God, you take away the sins of the world,

grant us peace.

St. Charles Borromeo Church January 24, 2021

Our Day School Principal, Eileen Updegrove, and the faculty and staff of St. Charles School, have done a particularly outstanding job during this most difficult year. They have kept their students in the best

educational surroundings: the traditional classroom. In addition, the administration, teachers, and staff, have dealt successfully with the many challenges brought about by the COVID-19 pandemic. We are already preparing for the 2021-2022 school year. As Catholic Schools Week begins next Sunday, we will offer a St. Charles School Open House on Sunday, January 31 from 11:00am to 1:00pm. This Open House is for new families only. If you plan to attend, please sign up for a specific time. Check the article in this bulletin for details. Individual tours can also be arranged. Please share this invitation with family, friends, or neighbors with school-age children. Thank you to St. Charles Parish Council members for their faithful attention to so many different areas of parish life. Their suggestions and advice help to “keep the show on the road.” At last week’s Council meeting, we had a number of discussions and made some plans for upcoming parish events, such as: On Ash Wednesday, February 17, ashes will be distributed in the “Roman fashion,” that is, by sprinkling on the head, rather than imposing on the forehead. We are planning a Lenten Wednesday Series. We have asked a different guest priest to celebrate each Wednesday 7:00pm Mass. This will be our Parish Lenten Retreat 2021. We will livestream the Mass and we will make sure it can be viewed later as well. Topic? The Seven Sacraments of the Church. We currently plan to offer Lenten Friday Fish Fries, but on a “take-out” basis only. We will need volunteers, however not as many workers as with traditional “in-house” dining. More about Fish Fries in the next few weeks, We have been professionally advised that “masking and social distancing” might still be required for next summer. So, we must plan ahead for our 2021 Summer Carnival. We will purchase Grand Raffle Prizes, but we will hold off on a final decision about the Carnival until March. The fallback would be another “Two Step Raffle” in place of the Carnival. We will keep you up-to-date.

CONSECRATION TO ST. JOSEPH

Did you know that Pope Francis has declared an entire year dedicated to St. Joseph? The Year of St. Joseph began on December 8, 2020 and continues until December 8, 2021. St. Joseph is the patron saint of many places, institutions, organizations and even of the Universal Church. Now is the time for us to turn to Saint Joseph and seek his intercession so that we can become better servants of the Lord. Fr. Josh is leading a group of parishioners to do a Consecration to St. Joseph. Utilizing Fr. Donald Calloway’s book “Consecration to St. Joseph,” Fr. Josh looks forward to helping us grow in our relationship and devotion to St. Joseph. All are welcome to make the conse-cration. The consecration begins on February 15th and ends on March 19th, the Solemnity of St. Joseph. Email Fr. Josh at [email protected] or text him at 216-302-7816 to let him know you are interested.

Merici Chapel...We’ve all heard the expression, “Hope springs eternal,” and so we begin 2021 with hope, prayer and faith, that this will be a better year than 2020. Let us all try and make a sincere effort to visit Jesus in Merici Chapel once a week and pray for a better, more faith-filled and hope-filled 2021.

WEEKLY RCIA REFLECTIONS

January 24th –

Third Sunday in Ordinary Time

Jesus tells Simon and Andrew to come after Him! Jesus will make them fishers of men – in other words, Jesus will give them the tools necessary to bring more people to a deeper faith and trust in God the Father. I am so fortunate at Saint Charles to have such a dedicated team of individuals who assist me with the formation of catechu-mens and candidates in the RCIA program. They are the “front line” of the parish’s ministry in getting to know these individuals and helping them grow in their faith. If you get a moment to do so today, please make a prayer of gratitude for them and ask God how you might be able to assist in this ministry so that we can continue to be “fishers of men.” – Fr. Josh
