Ron Woytiuk Award

The Ron Woytiuk Award is a special award for us at Louis St. Laurent. In an effort to recognize excel-lence there is always a fear that an athlete will be missed. For this reason, and the fact that honoring Ron Woytiuk was in order, this award was con-ceived. The recipient of this award shall possess the same attributes that we have come to know and love in Ron Woytiuk. Pursuit of excellence, love of sport, academic consistency, leadership, and sports-manship shall be criteria of this award. To the win-ner goes not just the trophy, but the recognition of his peers and coaches.

The 2017-18 swim team saw a small

but very committed group of athletes

make LSL proud at all the pools we

competed in this year. Our swimmers not only improved their swim

techniques in all four competitive strokes, but also saw improvements in

swim times through our mini-meets. Virtually all our athletes that com-

peted in the Divisional meet qualified for the City Championships – no

small feat as the number of swimmers competing in swimming was up

from years past. We look forward to an excellent year next fall as many

of our athletes will be returning. Go Barons Go!

Wow! What a great Cross Country team this year! Mr. Horpyniuk was

delighted to see the effort, hard work and determination that our athletes

put into all of their competitions and grueling practices. Our Baron runners

participated in multiple meets, where we ran our way through other

competitors like the wind. Meets included Gold Bar, Space and Science

Center and Rundle Park. A big hats off to Jacob Seubert who represented

LSL at provincials. Congratulations to all our Baron’s runners and I am

looking forward to the next upcoming year!

Jr. Varsity Women’s Volleyball

Coaches: Nicole Lemire & Brigitte Beaudoin Manager: Jaclyn Lewis The 2017-2018 Junior Varsity Women's Volleyball team had a successful season. From the beginning, we knew that we would have to work hard, have determination and, most importantly, have the heart to win. Over the course of the season, the team continued to improve their skills and their confidence. We wore our hearts on our sleeves and always put up a strong fight. We are proud of our accomplishments this year, including competing in the playoff side in the Canmore Tournament; an opportunity which hasn't been accomplished in many years. We are so proud to be not only a team, but also a volleyball family - Look What You Made Us Do. The Junior Varsity Volleyball Team had a season of tremendous growth and character building. The boys started the season with a berth in the semifinals of the Memorial tournament, and continued to build as the year progressed. The highlight of the season was the Romero Tournament. The team swept the round robin and continued to fight their way through the quarter and semifinals. Unfortunately, the boys came up against some tough competition against Archbish-op Jordan in the finals, and had to settle for silver. The boys had an excellent season overall, and Coach Faught, Hyrnkow, and Ross look forward to continuing the proud Baron legacy next season.

Curling

Coach: Brent Petryk Skip: Michael Mastromatteo Third: Sydney Parsons Second: Gabby Desmarais Lead: Charlotte Burghardt The Baron’s Curling Rink for the 2017-18 season consisted of a combina-tion of youth, enthusiasm and experience. With two experienced grade 12 players, a new curler, and an experienced grade 10 addition to the team, they were looking to build and grow from last season. A change of skip brought different shape to the team’s already strong game. Stiffer compe-tition this season was a challenge the team welcomed. With three mem-bers of the team graduating, we are looking at a youthful team next year, to be led by the remaining returning member.

Varsity Women’s

Volleyball

Coaches: Carole Carby & Bailey Wilson Manager: Susmriti Pradhan Vianca Alvarado Maria Baclig Clarissa Cortez Cristina Gayod Susie MacNeil Ally Marks Monica Rojek Kaitlyn Weinkauf Robyn Woodrow Louis St. Laurent Varsity Women’s Volleyball team had an amazing year. With a small roster and numerous injuries, the girls had to work hard for their wins. There were plenty of highs and lows, but this was more than a team, they learned to rely on one another and became more like a family. The whole team was supportive, worked hard, and had fun. Favourite memories included SMASH costumes, road trips and dance moves. A season to remember!

Varsity Golf Coach: Brent Petryk Christopher Cook Lucas Conroy-Dutton Nick Estephan Liam Frost Jake Ordough Robert Romjin Cyrus Toth Ryan Walker The Louis golf team was fraught with difficult challenges including cooler weather to start the season. Managing a top sixteen finish at the first tournament of the year, the team looked forward to Zones. That tournament would bring further challenges, with nearly three inches of snow falling on the course, ultimately postponing the tournament. Some very stiff competition, very stiff winds, and some extremely challenging course conditions prevailed once the weather cleared enough to complete the round; we found ourselves just short of qualifying for provincials. May brought vast improvements in conditions and weather – many of the players echoed this with vast improvement in their games, with personal bests recorded during the season. Returning players have high expectations for even stronger performances next season.

Varsity Men’s Volleyball

Coaches: Jaret Peel, Logan Edgelow, Andrew Brotta, Mark Ryan, Greg Banack & Matt Abaya Diego Alvarez Joshua Ferster Liam Frost Matt Gerke Tristin Mallon Allen Obiacoro Austin Tralnberg Andrew Weinkauf Jahshan Williams

Our Varsity Volleyball season started with two tryouts and then straight into Div 1 qualifiers where we earned our place among the top eight in the city. We quickly learned as a team what we needed to work on and came back even stronger participating in the U of A tournament. Racking up regular season wins in the following weeks we confidently moved forward to Canmore achieving a second place finish. In the following Barrhead and Strathcona Invitational tournaments we failed to medal, these losses pro-pelled us toward earning a fourth place finish in our own annual SMASH tournament. We then ended our Metro Edmonton season off with a hard fought loss against Harry Ainlay, which sent us into two weeks of hard work and preparation for Zones. Placing second in Zones we earned our spot and qualified for the 2017-18 3A Provincials as the Edmonton wild-card.

Varsity Track & Field Coaches: Ryan Lacy, Jaret Peel & Fay Henry This year the Louis St. Laurent Track and Field team consisted of thirty ath-letes competing in a variety of events. The team attended the Mini Meet and Divisionals leading to City Championships on May 24th. Louis had eighteen athletes qualify for the City Championships in their respective events. At City Championships Louis had some great results including Renerick Ronabio 3rd in Jr. boys Javelin, Ryan Hiscock 3rd in Jr. boys Shot Put, Ben Rathje 3rd in Sr. boys high jump, and Jacob Bodnaruk 3rd in Jr. boys long jump and 100M. The standout performances for Louis this year came in Jr. boys 4x100M relay and Jr. girls long jump. The Jr. boys 4x100M relay team made up of Ryan Hiscock, Elijah Matthew, Matt Gerke, and Jacob Bodnaruk ran a blistering 46.74 sec. race at city championships taking 2nd place and qualifying for pro-vincials. Jacyn Tan was the only individual provincial qualifier from Louis this year jumping 4.85M and also taking 2nd in Jr. girls long jump at the City Championships. Congratulations to the entire Track and Field team on their great season. Varsity Men’s Soccer Coach: Alessia Schiavon Congratulations to the Varsity Men’s 2018 Soccer team for a very successful and interesting season! I would like to thank all the boys for their hard work on the field. We played in some interesting weather this season! From 31 degrees to thunder & lightning. The team was undefeated until our quarter final playoff game; (not even the ref could decide who won the game, as it got rained out before the end). This team always found a way to remain positive and kept smiling. This is still a young team with many returning veterans for next year! This year, headed by coaches Mr. Peel, Mr. Faught, Ms. Toniolo, Coach Zigil, Coach Dimatatec and Coach Doldol; the Barons looked continue their success with new additions to their veteran core. The team started strong with a tremendous showcase at the HABIT (Harry Ainlay Badminton Invitational Tournament). Special congratulations to Maria Baclig who finished 2nd in Senior Girls Singles A Division and in the Senior Girls Doubles A Division with her partner Cristina Gayod, to Lian Delos Reyes who cap-tured 1st in the Senior Girls Singles B Division and in the Senior Girls Doubles B Division with her partner Jamaica Palazon, to Jaden Noade and Thomas Shettel who placed 2nd in the Intermediate Boys Doubles B Division and to Jacyn Tan and Jeffer-son Uagana (Harry Ainlay) who finished 2nd in the Mixed Doubles B Division. Good work to Lian Delos Reyes and Jamaica Palazon for finishing 2nd in Girls Doubles and to Jeric Palazon and Reianharte Aradanas for placing 3rd in Boys Doubles. As the season came to a close, Louis St. Laurent had the privilege of co-hosting the Mixed Doubles Zone Qualifiers as part of the City Championship Tournament where Jacyn Tan and Francesca Fernando finished 4th in Junior Womens Doubles. A big congratulations to Maria Baclig who won silver in the Senior Womens Singles City Championships. She went on to represent Louis St. Laurent at the Provincial Badminton Championships in Grimshaw, Alberta where she finished Top 8 in the province as the first female badminton athlete to represent LSL in 25 years. Thank you to all graduating athletes and with young energetic players like Liam Frost and Jacyn Tan, the Barons look forward in continuing the momentum into next season.

Jr. Varsity Men’s Basketball

Coaches: Fitzroy Ford & Matt Minenko Clive Asuncion Ian Canog Dylan Castillo Ethan Davis Jan Rae Dela Cruz Alexis Flores Daniel Gynane Ramy Habeib Malvin Jumarito Ben Lufiyek Elijah Matendo Andrei Salvador Philip Sarte Josef Umali This basketball season was a great experience for all involved. We had a great opportunity to grow together, bond and also to develop our skills at this level of play. In around February, our team hit their midseason form and became very strong and dominant in quite a few games in a row. It looked like we were going to be a strong seed in the playoffs but unfortunately we weren't able to capitalize enough on our midseason gains to make a deep enough run into the postseason. We were fortunate to develop our ability to work together as a team, over-come adversity and play through those tough games with our heads held high and show a great display of character. I was very proud to work with this team and even though we had a very long season they made that time together quite enjoyable. The kids worked well together and for whatever they may have lacked in skill they made up for in enthusiasm. Beng Beng!!

Varsity Women’s Soccer Coaches: Mark Klopoushak & Leon Vandendooren This was an exciting season for women's soccer at LSL. Starting with quite a new group of girls, we were able to find the right players to field a team.... well at least 9 per game. We had some stand out performances from veteran players who helped guide this group of young women to a playoff birth. Eve-ry game the girls came out energized and excited to take on the challenge ahead. The couching staff couldn't be more proud of these tremendous ath-letes, and even better ambassadors for Louis St. Laurent. Huge shout out to Miss Costanzo for driving us to all of our away games. A group of 15 athletes, with a positive attitude and a willingness to learn came together to play in 5 challenging tournaments and a competitive league. With commitment and hard work, the girls improved immensely from November to February. The leadership from our grade 12’s was key to our team this year, as we were very young. The future is bright with a possible 11 players returning for next year. It was a great season with many memories, and we are very proud of the girls’ never quit attitude!

Varsity Men’s

Basketball Coach: Tay Nsaliwa & Marc Lapierre Assistant Coach: Tim Mayo Kobe Adjei Matthew Cartmell Jacob Dean Joshua Ferster Liam Frost Sam Joseph Majok Majok Lester Nigal Robert Pelland Stiven Puentes Ben Rathje Thomas Shettell Brandon Wells Jahshan Williams The 2017-2018 Varsity Basketball season was a very successful season for the team. We finished 2nd in our Division with an 8-3 record. We were successful in most of our tournament; Won Con-solation Finals in Red Deer Classic and in our Green & Gold Clas-sic, 3rd in Father Michael Troy Tournament (St. Joes). Unfortu-nately we had a bad playoff run which took us out of the champi-onship. Congratulations to our captain Ben Rathje for being voted as one the best players in our league (Metro All-Star). Overall, our season was competitive and memorable. Thanks to all the players for a great season. To all the graduates good luck in your future endeavors! - “FOR THE TEAM”
