Not just Trains or Vehicles

Lovells Springs customers don’t just build trains or vehicles, they are engaged in other industries too, like sporting equipment. Ludwig Kohler and his company Gemini Traps of Bankstown, N.S.W. build their famous range of clay pigeon launch equipment used all over the world. The clay pigeon “trap” must launch thousands of targets per day at about 70 km/hr, year after year with complete reliability and consistency. Volume 1, Issue 1

From 1st July 2012, Lovells Group Head Office at Carrington will become a paperless environment. We are in the process of creating our document management system and guidelines, and providing support and training to staff who will be working

‘paperless’.

We ask that all invoices, statements and any other correspondence is sent via email to [email protected]

Forms will be forwarded to all

customers and suppliers in May to update details for accounts, purchasing and sales personnel.

Our aim is to increase efficiency of paper flow, allowing quick and easy access to filed documents, while reducing our impact on the environment through minimising paper wastage. Our goal is to reduce our paper costs by 60% over the next 12 months.

When paperless will take affect

Record keeping constitutes more than 90% of all office activity. Studies indicate that of the paper filed, over 80% is never referenced again! One study showed that over 45% of the office paper that is discarded was thrown out on the day it was printed. A great deal of time is being wasted printing, sorting, purging, and filing paper.

Then there is the cost aspect of paper. According to the Association for Information and Image Management, the lifecycle cost of a document is over $20, which includes the cost of paper, printing, mailing, distribution, and handling fees. Another study done estimated the cost of paper management to be about $50 per document.

Essentially becoming a paperless office could reap the benefits of improved efficiency and effectiveness, reduce cost, and improve the brand and image of the company by becoming a better corporate environmental steward.

Some paper will still remain

No matter what, a company probably can't be completely paperless. Some papers -- like signed, sealed deeds and legally binding contracts, or paper records for audits and IRS tax filings -- need to exist in their original form for legal or financial reasons or, particularly in the financial services industry, to show regulatory compliance. Still, many companies will agree that becoming paperless, or at least paper-less, is well worth the effort.

Why Become a Paperless Office?

There is a clear environmental need for paperless offices. The paper industry is one of the world’s major polluting industries and one of the largest contributors to greenhouse gases with over 900 million trees cut done annually. The EPA reports that paper is the number-one material thrown away, comprising 40% of our waste stream. According to the National Resources Defense Council, “The

pulp and paper industry may contribute to more global and local environmental problems than any other industry in the world.”

In addition to environmental impacts, paper is time consuming to manage.

4WD utes have long been the domain of tradies, farmers and families who are looking for a bit of 4WDing flexibility. They offer plenty of load-carrying capacity when you’re out working during the week, yet are more than capable when it comes time to throw in the swag and head bush. Lovells Springs has come up with a GVM upgrade kit for your 150 Series HiLux to enhance its versatility even further.

The kit includes front coil springs, rear leaf springs, four gas Legend 36mm twin tube long-travel gas shock absorbers and everything else you need to make the upgrade happen. Compared to a standard suspension kit, the Lovells GVM upgrade kit also includes handbrake extension brackets, components to adjust the load sensing proportionate valve for correct brake bias and a full compliance plate.

“With a Lovells Springs GVM upgrade kit installed, your load-carrying capacity will increase to 1600kg and your GVM to a full 3300kg – exactly where utes should be,” Lovells Spring Sales Manager Mike Davison says. It’s worth noting that you need to act on a Lovells kit as soon as you decide on the purchase of a new HiLux – they can’t be installed once registered, and need to be done by a qualified

installer when the ute is brand new.So by now you’re probably

thinking, yeah, all this GVM upgrade is great, but what about the ride quality? “The firmness of the ride is increased when unladen, which reduces brake dive and improves handling,” Mike says. Leaf sprung utes can leave a lot to be desired in the handling department, so Lovells is on a win here by raising the GVM and improving the ride characteris-tics with the one system.

A lift of around 50mm over the standard ride height is another great bonus, giving you extra clearance once you’re finished on site for the week and it’s time to hit the tracks. Even when loaded right up to the GVM rating, a 30–40mm lift still applies.

The Lovells GVM upgrade kit is available from $3100 plus GST fully fitted. The kit holds compliance with the Department of Infrastruc-ture, Transport, Regional Develop-ment and Local Government so you know you’re completely legal when you hit the tracks.

On a sadder note we recently farewelled a UGL colleague that has worked on the OSCar project since our initial involvement two years ago. Sharon Magill is leaving to begin a new role with UGL Resources, on

Virtual Dashboard for Underground Mining

Vehicles

The Lovells Technology team are hard at work developing a suite of hardware and software products aimed at providing to Australia’s underground mining vehicle builders a complete virtual dashboard. This will incorporate displays of vehicle operating parameters and current

position, explosive gas concentrations, collision avoidance data from other vehicles, reversing camera display, messaging system to and from the surface along with other optional systems. Motorola’s new digital VHF radio systems and high powered RFID technology will provide communications to the surface and reference vehicle position data. This ambitious project is aimed at both

hard rock and coal mining industry vehicles and will be available in mid 2012.
