LRAD Maritime SolutionsProtecting Maritime Personnel, Vessels and Assets
In response to the deadly October 2000 attack on the USS Cole, LRAD Corporation created the Acoustic Hailing Device (AHD)
market with its proprietary Long Range Acoustic Device® technologies and systems. AHD’s provide maritime security personnel the
critical capability of communicating to potential threats to determine intent and change threat behavior.
In 2005, LRAD gained worldwide attention for its use in preventing pirates from boarding the luxury cruise liner, Seabourn Spirit and
taking it and its 151 passengers and crew hostage off the coast of Somalia. Since successfully defending the Seabourn Spirit , LRAD
systems have been used many times around the world to protect ships, passengers, crews, and maritime assets.
LRAD is the most thoroughly tested AHD available having successfully passed approxi mately 40 separate U.S government tests in-
cluding all MILSPEC testing for heat, humidity and shock. LRAD is the AHD of choice for the U.S. Navy and U.S. Coast Guard.
LRAD – ENHANCED LONG-RANGE COMMUNICATIONS
LRAD systems broadcast audible, exceptionally clear voice messages and deterrent tones from close range up to 3 kilometers. Unlike
commercial marine speakers that disperse sound in all directions, LRAD’s proprietary audio technology focuses sound in a 15° – 30°
beam while substantially reducing audio levels behind the devices and in surrounding areas.
Optimized to the primary
human hearing range of 1
– 5 kHz, LRAD’s advanced
driver and waveguide
technology ensures every
broadcast is clearly heard
and understood above
wind, engine, and back-
ground noise.
LRAD eliminates the shortcomings of other maritime communication systems by maintaining a smooth frequency response with an
intensity variation of less than 5dB, which prevents audio fading and produces clear, unambiguous communication across all broad-
cast frequencies. LRAD is unique in its ability to broadcast either live or recorded voice messages in any language with exceptional
intelligibility and tonal clarity.
From the hand portable LRAD 100X to remotely operated LRAD-RX® systems integrated with radar, cameras, high powered lights
and other sensors, LRAD systems are rugged and built to withstand the harshest maritime conditions.

SHIPBOARD PROTECTION
During maritime operations, LRAD systems protect crews and
ships by clearly communicating to vessels not responding to ra-
dio calls to determine intent, change behavior and expand ves-
sel standoff zones for ships underway, pier side or at anchor.
At close range, LRAD provides a scalable shipboard protection
capability that is highly effective, non-lethal and non-kinetic.
NAVAL FORCES / COAST GUARD
LRAD’s technologically advanced AHD systems are currently in use by the
U.S. Navy, U.S. Coast Guard and 16 international Naval forces and Coast
Guard agencies. Vastly superior to commercial marine speakers, LRAD’s
long-range communication and force protection capabilities significantly en-
hance operational effectiveness in a variety of missions. LRAD systems are
used during interceptions and interdictions, search and rescues, environmen-
tal responses, coastal sea control, and escort, shore side security, anti-pira-
cy, and maritime immigration interdiction operations.
COMMERCIAL SHIPPING VESSELS / CRUISE LINERS / YACHTS
After being taken hostage by pirates in April 2009, Captain Richard Phillips of
the MV Maersk Alabama called for LRAD systems to be used in a “…comprehen-
sive, multi-faceted plan to combat piracy” during a subsequent Senate Sub-
committee hearing on Piracy on the High Seas. Six months later, he was proven
right when the MV Maersk Alabama deployed LRAD along with other defensive
measures to deter another pirate attack off the northeast coast of Somalia.
“Any comprehensive, multi-faceted plan to combat piracy”
should include “LRAD”.
- Captain Richard Phillips, MV Maersk Alabama

PORT AND MARITIME INFRASTRUCTURE SECURITY
LRAD-RX systems are being deployed around the world by maritime agencies for perimeter surveillance and security applications.
Most integrated security networks can only monitor with cameras, thermal imaging, motions detectors and other sensors.
Remotely operated LRAD-RX systems provide the critical ‘first response’ capability missing from ob-
serve-only integrated security networks.
Using powerful, highly intelligible voice commands and deterrent tones to safely establish and enforce standoff zones up to 3 kilo-
meters, LRAD-RX systems determine a security threat’s intent and provide maritime security officers a scalable, non-kinetic ship-
board protection response to unauthorized incursions.
Featuring an integrated zoom camera, high-intensity searchlight and an IP-addressable
full pan and tilt drive for precise tracking and targeting, LRAD-RX systems can also
be integrated with radar to provide fully automated intruder alerts. By turning passive
surveillance systems and command and control centers into remote first responders,
LRAD-RX systems provide a permanent perimeter presence, reduce false alarms and
protect maritime security personnel from potentially deadly situations.
When integrated with Unmanned Surface Vessels, LRAD systems also provide an auton-
omous, remote first response capability for port, harbor and ship security.
LRAD IN ACTION
While most commercial shipping vessels, cruise liners and yachts have limited defensive capabilities, LRAD’s inclusion in ship protection protocols has proven invaluable during threatening at sea encounters including:
M/ V RESOLVE & SUNSHINE SKY
Repelled Attack at 1,100 meters – “…aimed her (LRAD) using the sight, went to maximum power and volume and activated. The first time the boat seemed to fall off course momentarily, then come back. I activated the unit a second time for a longer period. The boat instantly broke off its attack. The crew all saw it and I now have a ship full of believers. Lesson learned: It (LRAD) works.” - Captain M/V Resolve
SEABOURN SPIRIT
The crew and security team used LRAD to prevent the pirates from boarding. The USS Gonzalez assisted the Seabourn Spirit in the attack’s after-math.“The security team also did well. Under fire…they assisted passengers to get them inside the skin of the ship and they deployed LRAD. The Security Officer was particularly enthusiastic about the performance of LRAD, and in his opinion it saved the day.” – CO USS Gonzales
SPIRIT OF ADVENTURE
Sailing in the Indian Ocean, the Spirit of Adventure deployed LRAD as part of its defensive measures that successfully turned back pursuing pirates.
OPERATION OCEAN SHIELDSince 2010, NATO warships have used LRAD systems to protect commercial shipping by communicating to and deterring suspected pirate vessels operating off the Horn of Africa.

OIL & GAS
WILDLIFE DISPERSAL
Oil & gas platforms make ideal seabird roost areas. Birds perch, feed and nest on unmanned plat-
forms causing significant guano-related health concerns for maintenance workers and expensive
cleanup costs.
Featuring advanced directionality and multiple volume settings, LRAD systems are highly effective
bioacoustic bird deterrents capable of broadcasting a near infinite variety of tones and predator
calls to ensure against habituation.
LRAD systems can also be integrated with avian radar to automatically respond to wildlife incur-
sions while also creating a completely unmanned platform security solution to deter fishing boats and trespassers.
WATERSIDE SECURITY
Fishing boats and other unauthorized vessels cause safety and security issues when they move
too close to platforms, piers and diving and maintenance areas. Fishing trawlers encroaching
on active dive sites create a lethal threat to divers in the water. Before LRAD, operators had no
way to determine if radio calls were being received and understood by approaching boats.
Chevron and other platform operators are using LRAD systems to broadcast warnings and
move boats away from manned and unmanned platforms.
The Sang, a 75 ft. fishing vessel, entered a Chevron dive area and the dive
operator immediately initiated radio calls ordering the Sang to change course. After receiving no reply
from the Sang, the dive operator switched to LRAD and began broadcasting Vietnamese-language warn-
ings. The Sang immediately stopped, picked up its nets and left the area.
TERMINAL SECURITY
LRAD-RX systems integrated with thermal imaging and radar provide a remotely operat-
ed, first responder capability to protect platforms and liquid natural gas (LNG) terminal
waterside approaches, and prevent security threats from becoming security breaches.
The Energía Costa Azul LNG terminal on the northwestern coast of Baja California in-
stalled LRAD-RX systems to move fishing boats and unidentified vessels away from the
terminal ’s waterside approaches.
LRAD-RX systems provide maritime oil and gas facility operators a completely unmanned
perimeter security solution capable of safely deterring wildlife and human incursions.
LRAD systems are in use in more than 70 countries around the world
and are the only acoustic hailing devices that meet all U.S. Military requirements.
