First of all– The Spring Dinghy Series will conclude on Thursday, June 29th. So, Dinghy racers, come on out and race! Races start at 6:00 pm. Hopefully, the weather will cooperate!

Secondly- Racers– clean your bottoms, check your sails, gather your crew, and come out to race in the 4th of July Regatta!!! The Regatta will take place on (wait for it!)- July 4th!!!! Click here for the Notice of Race, and here for the Sailing Instructions. NOTE– The Sailing Instructions were recently updated, so, check it out!!!!

The Race Committee duties schedule has been updated to reflect new members’ assignments and swapped assignments. The schedule can be found here on the website. Please remember that each Active, Young Active, Senior and Student member is required to serve on a race committee at least once per year. Unfortunately, there have been several “No-Shows” on race days! It is YOUR responsibility to know when you are scheduled, and to be at the club on time. For the complete Race Committee duty policy, click here.

After the 4th of July Regatta, racing will be on hiatus for a couple of months. That’s due to the usual East Tennessee no wind, hot as stink, weather we tend to experience. BUT, racing will resume on September 2 and 3 for the Labor Day Regatta! The Fall Dinghy Series will begin September 7th, with the Fall Keelboat Series starting on September 9th. More information and reminders will be sent out at later dates, and the NORs and SIs are available on the CYC website.

July 2017 No. 520 3

I want to personally thank all that came out for the Spring Series Keelboat and Dinghy racing. I was very encouraged to see the turnout of 9 boats, including members from the CYC Training Fleet on 2 of the boats, that came out to race this past Saturday. Unfortunately, the wind did not cooperate and we were unable to race. The wind, however, did come up in the late afternoon around 3:30 which a few people, including myself, did take advantage of. Overall, the Spring Keelboat Series recorded 13 races from May 13th to June 17th, with 7 Keelboat skippers participating. So not too bad for an early summer racing event. Throughout the series, many things were learned that can be used and adjusted to make the Series better. For one, in the Spring, and potentially in the Fall, we will look to start the races later on Saturday afternoons when the wind appears to be better, say 2 – 4pm. I want to especially thank Johnny Ballatin for all of his help and assistance during the racing series for getting all the scores together and posted so quickly. On another front, Johnny has graciously offered to conduct a Basic Learn To Race and Sailing Skills course some time this summer, provided there is sufficient interest. The time and date are to be determined. This course will be free of charge and each participant will receive course material to build their very own information booklet. If you are interested in attending this course, please contact Johnny Ballatin at [email protected]. I am looking forward to the 4th of July and Labor Day Regattas. The Labor Day Regatta will kick off the Fall Racing Season, immediately followed by the Fall Keelboat Series starting on September 9th and going through October 14th. After the study of wind patterns and times, we will put out a notification for the starting times of sailing for the Fall Keelboat Series. Again, thanks to everyone that participated in the Racing series to date and I look forward to new racers participating in the future, as new members and the CYC Training Fleet take to the water.

Here are the standings for the Spring Keelboat Series:

The storms that rolled through East Tennessee in late May really made a mess!!!! So much damage, and MANY, MANY downed trees. As a result, lots of large trees and debris floated down the river. Several race Saturdays proved challenging in dodging the minefields!

But, thanks to Rod Meryweather and Mark Esch-Williams, quite a few large trees wedged between boats and lodged under the docks were removed and relocated. What a job!!!!

Memorial Day Regatta

The weather was pretty-close to perfect– light to moderate winds (enough to scoot a boat in the water!), slightly overcast skies (so we weren’t roasting in the sun!) and moderate temps in the low to mid 70’s (no sweating bullets!). The Race Committee was top-notch, with Bill Bradshaw and crew setting the course and running 3 great races! What more could you ask for?

Six boats met at the starting line. And, here’s how they did after all was said and done-

And, did I say there were six boats?!?!?! A special mention goes out to Carl Miller, who sailed his Lightning. Unfortunately, though, his was the only dinghy in the hunt.

Concord Sailing Center

Sail Camp was a great success these past three weeks! We had around 124 campers, with many returning multiple weeks. Our sailors were in the water as much as possible with our experienced instructors supervising a wide range of lesson plans and sailing activities. On shore, the campers worked on a variety of projects from fleet flags, build-a-boats and Morse code bracelets. Fun was had by all!

Former CYC/UT Sailors Win 2017 Dixie Regatta! AGAIN!!!!!!

This article was taken from the Thistle Class Association Facebook Page (HERE), and was brought to our

attention by Bill Bradshaw. Thanks, Bill!

Brad Russell, a former CYC member and grandson of Jack and Betty Russell (members of CYC for some 50-60

years, and whom “Betty’s Shack” is named after) and Doug Toney, son of CYC members Bert and Leslie Toney,

sailing #3841. GREAT JOB!!!!!!

Dixie Sweeps the South Seas! (By Beth Tumlin)

ALOHA....and another Dixie down! Once again, Atlanta Yacht Club’s Fleet 48 managed to lure sixty boats and their attendant mischief-makers to the little-known tropical paradise of Loko Allatoona over Memorial Day Weekend for this year’s South Seas Dixie, bribing them with promises of super sailing against the best in the Southern Hemisphere (and oh, BTW. . . a party weekend like no other)! Big Kahuna Gavin McCormack must have paid off the wind gods, as despite the uniquely Allatoona shifts, the breeze was nearly Thistle-perfect for all three races. The racing format was changed back this year to four sub-fleets of fifteen boats, rotating each race so that all competitors sailed against everyone else at least once. With its duplicate scores, this system always creates an interesting scoreboard (especially on Saturday night, when the first nine places read 2-3-4-5-7-7-10-10-10 points!), leaving much neck-and-neck competition to be resolved on Sunday morning. But there was no disputing Brad Russell’s two firsts Saturday, and even with a fourth in Sunday’s race he managed to hang on to his trophy of the last two years that some are beginning to call the “Brad Perpetual.” Extra kudos to Brad’s dad Andy Russell, who came THIS CLOSE! to chasing his son around the race course and in the process earned this year’s Fastest Over 60 trophy; and special credit to Gavin McCormack for sailing like a winner even if the numbers didn’t show it. There were a number of competitors for the coveted Potted Thistle, including Alex Padgett, who received a dashboard power hula girl for his efforts but could not trump the true winner, Dan Russell’s crew Adrianne Grand. Keep up the good work, all of you! Overall, the South Seas Dixie was a win-win for all.

Important Bits and Pieces Hello Everyone, I have noticed many trailer spaces are getting overgrown with grass and weeds. It is part of your responsibility to maintain your trailer space(s). This includes the far East and far West parking spaces. For those members that have trailer spaces, please clean them up before July 15th. Members are responsible for keeping their assigned trailer space(s) in good order: weeds and brush must be cleared by July 15th. A $25.00 charge may be applied for each non-compliance. The Harbormaster may also require additional space maintenance, if necessary. Questions can be directed to the Harbormaster at [email protected]. Thanks! The CYC Harbormaster

CYC Weather Station!

The new weather station (BloomSky) set up in April really took a beating in the crazy weather that

rolled through our area at the end of April, resulting in damage to the solar panel and camera.

Thanks to Bobby Parks and crew for working hard to get the weather station back up and running.

In addition to the BloomSky data, we have added another video camera supported by Weather

Underground. It’s a good thing, as Martha says! You can access the newest video cam on the

website on the Home Page. You’ll notice three links for weather conditions– Current Conditions

(BloomSky), Wind Forecast (SailFlow Wind Forecasts) and 24-Hour Webcam (Weather Underground live

camera).

Daffynition- Spinnaker-

1) Large sail used in dead calms to keep the crew busy.

2) An extremely large, lightweight, balloon-shaped piece of sailcloth frequently trailed in the water off the bow in a big bundle to slow the boat down.

Ponder This…….. A sailor has ties to home but is knot there often.

If tin whistles are made of tin, then what are fog horns made of?

If athletes get athlete’s foot, does that mean astronauts get mistletoe?

Sunglasses for sailors had better be seeworthy.

Spinnaker Hell! Been there, Done that!
