Interior features on twenty creatives from

Antwerp to New York, who all have one thing

common, namely a passion for plants.

— Bart Kiggen and Magali Elali visited florist Mark Colle, interior photographer Martyn Thompson and fashion designer Christian Wijnants among others.

— During their visits, the duo photographed these people’s homes, focusing specifically on the presence of plants. The residents discuss their passion for plants, flowers and greenery in the accompanying text.

— The book also contains a handy index listing all the plants featured in the photo-graphs, including their specific characte-ristics.

Photographer Bart Kiggen and journalist Magali Elali run the successful interior design blog Coffeeklatch. Besides this, they also write features for various media outlets, including a weekly section in De Morgen Magazine, the lifestyle supplement of the Belgian daily De Morgen.

Reginald Van de Velde takes photos of forgot-

ten places, of abandoned spaces where time has

ground to a halt. His haunting photos are simply

breath-taking.

— Old convents and castles where you expect the inhabitants to wake up any minute after sleeping for 100 years, dismantled power plants, spooky abandoned hospitals and uni-versity auditoriums: Reginald Van de Velde is fascinated by all these rundown places.

— On his many journeys in Belgium and abroad, the seasoned adventurer sought out these places with just one objective in mind, namely to capture the transitory nature of these spaces.

— His photos bear testimony to his boundless passion to document all the things that have been carelessly left behind by people. Snapshots as a manifesto for insignifi-cance.

Reginald Van de Velde likes to explore the un-known. He travels around the world in search of abandoned places to photograph. His work has been featured in solo and group exhibiti-ons, among others at the Backlight Photo Fes-

tival (Finland) and the New York Photo Festival (USA) and in Somerset House (United King-dom). He has already received several awards, including the Award for Photography at the Triennale de Barbaix (2008). He also received an award at the Cannes Lions International Festival (2011) and was a finalist in the World Photography Awards (2011). His photos have been published in several international quality magazines. The photo editorial team of Natio-nal Geographic Magazine has already selected several of his photos as personal favourites in the past.

A personal take on street typography in vari-

ous European cities, including in former Soviet

countries and in southern Europe, with photos of

letters that epitomise a city’s atmosphere.

— In the past, Stan Van Steendam’s obsession for street typography already prompted him to create the magnificent, acclaimed book, Brussels Type.

— Now comes the sequel, Reading the Streets, in which Van Steendam travels abroad with the same mission. He likes to intuitively explore cities, using the typography on the city’s streets as his guide – signs with letters that tell a story about the chequered history of these cities.

— He photographs the typographic fragments he discovers, isolating them from their context. As a result, these sometimes beau-tiful, at times banal, and often impressive typographic compositions take on a whole new meaning.

— The outcome is a series of personal photos, taken with old, analog cameras that suc-ceed in representing the transitory nature of the city in a heartfelt and provocative manner.

Stan Van Steendam (1985) studied graphic design at Sint-Lucas in Ghent. He is passionate about typography and works for various publis-hers in Belgium and abroad, as well as being a photographer and visual artist.

For book lovers with a penchant for design: 100

quotes about reading, writing and books in a uni-

que, typographical presentation by Dooreman.

— Bibliophile Bart Van Aken has been col-lecting quotes about reading for several years. This book contains his own personal selection.

— Including such declarations of love as “Rea-ding is that fruitful miracle of communicati-on in the midst of solitude” (Marcel Proust), surprising, witty statements like “Outside of a dog, a book is a man’s best friend. Inside of a dog it’s too dark to read” (Groucho Marx) and wise statements to mull over, including “We can destroy what we have written, but we cannot unwrite it” (Anthony Burgess).

— Every quote is presented in a unique, origi-nal and tailor-made design by Dooreman, with an adapted font or special letter shapes.

— Each quote is in English. Where applicable, the quote has also been provided in the origi-nal language, along with a brief explanation (author, context).

— An original must-have for book lovers, desig-ners, readers, writers and aesthetes.

Dooreman studied free-form graphics at Sint-Lucasinstituut in Ghent. He started out his career as an illustrator. Over time, however, his activities veered towards typography and design. He creates the covers of all of the books of the Belgian author Tom Lanoye and has designed posters for various theatres. He also works as a designer and typographer for almost all of the Flemish and Dutch publis-hers. Dooreman has received several awards, including the Henry Van de Velde Award for his entire career. He is also a musician.

The book is set in 2540 and depicts a profoundly changed society thanks to

300 photos of peculiar, absurd and sometimes

hilarious, no-nonsense solutions that are used in

our daily surroundings.

— Not every solution is an answer to a problem.

— The Brussels-based artist David Helbich started collecting Belgian Solutions in 2006. Once he started to share his photos online on Facebook in 2008 (the Belgian Solutions page has over 23,000 fans), the project gat-hered speed, with contributions by Belgian Solutions spotters all over the world.

— Luster is publishing the third, updated and improved edition of the original publica-tion.

The artist David Helbich (1973) was born in Ber-lin. He studied composition and philosophy in Freiburg and Amsterdam and has been living in Brussels since 2002. The renowned architect’s firm of Mauro Poponcini and Patrick Lootens (representative projects include Artesis Plantijn Hogeschool near Park Spoor Noord, Cadiz in Antwerp’s Eilandje district and the office building near Ghent Sint-Pieters station) celebrates 25 years of architectural practice in this beautifully designed and richly documented publication, in a style that reflects their own: beautifully balanced, clean and contemporary. Obviously their many various achievements are featured in the book, but Mauro Poponcini and Patrick Lootens also take the time to reflect on archi-tecture in conversations with five prominent partners (Filip Canfyn, b0b Van Reeth, Kristi-aan Borret, Bart Verschaffel, Henk Visch), about the architectural practice in Flanders and various other themes that they care about.

Helix apartments and shops

HEA 97location: Antwerpprogramme: mixed-use residentialclient: Himmosbuilt: 2004surface area: 2,304 m2

‘We feel right at home in such a problematic, time-worn area.’ The place under discussion is the area around the Police Tower designed by Renaat Braem, one of Belgium’s most important post-war modernists. In the 1960s, Braem designed the new Administrative Centre of Antwerp on the spot where a shopping gallery and market hall had stood since 1841. However, the ambitious plans never came to fruition. Only the Police Tower was built. The raw scar left by the demolitions was later covered by a prosaic shopping centre. The gaping hole torn in the urban fabric by the modernist intervention was never repaired. An opportunity then arose to restore at least a fragment of the block. The city sold an orphaned plot on the corner of Oudaan and Kammenstraat to a real estate developer. The design for the apartment building with shops alleviates the discrepancy in scale between the medieval city and the modernist heritage. The location dictates the design. The building seeks to attain harmony with its neighbours. The spiral movement of the helix arose from that logical train of thought. Departing from the narrow, medieval Kammenstraat, the facade bends towards the stately townhouses on Oudaan, nally reaching towards the imposing Police Tower. The cornice rises gradually, culminating in a sharp roof volume. All the facades present themselves as if they were the front. The building has no back. The facades are clad in lead panels. This unconventional choice reects the ambition to make the building stand out, while at the same time enabling its surroundings to absorb it. On the one hand, lead is a traditional building material that was used for such things

The city of Antwerp rewarded the minor intervention in the city with the 2004 Monumenten- en Welstandsprijs, a heritage award.

Appartementen Helix‘Op zo’n problematische,

a spacious vista overlooking the canal. The building is crowned with a protruding oval canopy. It adds a frivolous note to the street, while creating an enclosed space for the people living in the penthouse.

This apartment building is one of Polo’s early projects, dating back to a period in which decorative, historicizing architecture was the norm in Brussels. The project was quite controversial – referred to colloquially as a ‘tin can’ – but it can be seen as having paved the way for a dierent style of urban architecture that would slowly but surely nd its way into the capital city from the start of the 21st century. The building is situated on a corner plot along the canal and Steenweg op Gent. The building, with two distinct sides, mediates the dierent contexts. The building’s simple brick side facade ties in with the town houses along the avenue, while the facade along the canal demanded a more distinctive gesture. The folded, ribbed aluminium volume – the ‘tin can’ – adds a dynamic, lively touch to the rough metropolitan setting. The long, horizontal windows express the maritime avour of the neighbourhood and give the tenants

as the roof tiles on the nearby baroque Church of St Augustine. On the other hand, it is a unique, almost iconic facade material. Lead looks dierent every time, depending on the angle and the weather conditions. Sometimes it looks dark and dull; at other moments, it glimmers in the sunlight. The building’s ground oor has a space that can be subdivided for retail purposes. Above, thirteen apartments unfold around a core with a lift and staircase, suused with natural light thanks to the large windows at the top of the building. The changing facades of the helix bring a playful dynamic and intense living experience to the layout of the apartments.

After having published 4 guides to Belgian cities we took the bestselling 500 Hidden Secrets concept abroad. In 2014 born and bred Parisienne Marie Farman selected 500 addresses and facts that few people know, such as a restaurant where you can order a French meal until 3:30 in the morning or a secret street with a building by Le Corbusier. In 2015 Guido van Eijck and Saskia Naafs shared the 500 most interesting places in Amsterdam, such as an atomic bunker in the Vondelpark, a shop where you can buy meteorite shards, or a hidden Keith Haring mural in a food distribution centre. All the guides in this collection are revised and updated with every reprint, to make sure they include all the newest places-to-be.

THE BRIGHT SIDE OF

THE BRIGHT SIDE OF BELGIUMis more than just another tourist guide. It is an inspiring photo book, an extensive source of information and a passionate ode to the most beautiful cities and regions of Belgium. The book introduces the great cultural cities but it also examines the natural beauty of regions like Limburg, the Ardennes and the coast. It covers architecture, art, gastronomy, fashion and design and includes interviews with prominent fi gures (like fashion designers A.F. Vandevorst and art connoisseur Axel Vervoordt) and lists of the best places to shop, eat, sleep and drink.

Sigrid Vandensavel works as a freelance editor for various media companies. She is always on the lookout for new trends in the areas of fashion, food, culture and design. She is the author of North Sea Living.

As an editor Hadewijch Ceulemans specialised in the areas of national and international design, architecture and cultural history. She is the author of several books on these subjects, including Belgium’s Best Design.
