Dear Residents,

As we venture into a new financial year, Council has committed to delivering projects approved in the 2019-20 Budget ensuring continuation of infrastructure renewal, refurbishment and rectification works to public asset centres, paths, parks, playgrounds, pavilions, recreational reserves, roads and waste recycling.

While we adapt to the cooler months of winter dressed in our beanies, scarfs and gloves it’s a wonderful time of the year to maintain healthy lifestyles by embarking on brisk walks through Boroondara’s magnificent green open spaces and experiencing the enhanced surrounds.

Regardless of preferred outdoor habitats, we are spoilt for choice with an abundance of family-friendly destinations including the meticulously landscaped Fordham Gardens. The gardens heritage pond and rock wall cascade water feature has recently been resurrected, making it the ideal venue for year-round barbecues, picnics, or simply getting in touch with Mother Nature. You can book this amazing space for your events via www.boroondara.vic.gov.au/bookings/hire-park-garden-or-reserve.

As a Councillor committed to advocating for safer communities, I continue to lobby for lighting renewal in our public spaces to provide a greater sense of security in our neighbourhoods. For those of us that enjoy a leisurely evening stroll with or without four legged companions, I am pleased to advise there are several new lighting installations commissioned to provide safer walking passage:

§ Lynden Park upper oval has four new towers to enable junior league training and illuminate the surrounding area for recreational walks

§ Highfield Park upper oval towers are scheduled to be installed

§ Hartwell Village open space mall will welcome a new solar light lamp, and

§ additional sites are currently under consideration.

In the spirit of the safer communities mantra, I wish to commend the Burwood Village Traders Association initiative to proactively liaise with the landlords and tenants of the commercial buildings abutting the Overhear Café, in their pursuit to transform the dark and undesirable arcade into a light, bright, artistic delight with the installation

of skylights, painted wall and ceiling panels and a soon-to-be commissioned mural.

Council is proud to support the mural project through the Small Business Sparks Grant program. This exciting project will attract local and new visitors to the shopping precinct by creating a new vibe. It should also encourage shoppers to utilise the rear car park and walk through the “welcoming” arcade.

Increased lighting and mural installations provide numerous practical benefits that support positive health and wellbeing and in addition serve as crime-prevention deterrents.

By working together in the ”City of Harmony” we can keep Boroondara beautiful 24/7.

Sincerely yours,

Councillor Lisa Hollingsworth

To find out more about the Service Crew visit www.boroondara.vic.gov.au/service-crew or call 9278 4580.

As you spend time in Burwood Village, you may have noticed our Service Crew dressed in fluorescent orange, busily working to keep our much-loved shopping centre clean and beautiful.

The Service Crew is an initiative to improve the way we take care of our shopping centres. They have been a welcome addition to the current maintenance program, offering a more personalised and immediate service to some of our major shopping centres.

The crew focus on the cleansing, repair and maintenance of Council assets and enhance our shopping centres by carrying out minor repair works on the spot. Since starting in November, the crew have carried out more than 40 inspections at Burwood Village, including more than 170 cleaning tasks and 35 maintenance tasks.

When you see the Service Crew van nearby, it means our small team are sprucing up your local shopping centre, making it a more pleasant environment for all.

Have you seen our Service Crew?

For details of all Boroondara MCH centres, refer to your child health record. Alternatively, you can contact a representative from Boroondara MCH by emailing [email protected], visiting the website at www.boroondara.vic.gov.au/mch, or calling 9278 4606.

The Glen Iris East Maternal & Child Health Centre (MCHC) is operated by Council and provides valuable services for families in the areas of parenting, health and development from birth until school age.

To improve the ageing condition of the building and to ensure it remains fit for purpose, a $450,000 renewal project has been adopted in Council’s 2019-20 Budget. The design involves a minor extension to the building, including constructing a second consulting suite, indoor/outdoor play areas and overall upgrades to amenities.

The renewal will provide an opportunity for two MCH nurses to work on site, as well as providing a suitable indoor and outdoor space to run supported play groups facilitated by MCH staff.

A builder is expected to be appointed in August. While construction is underway, Glen Iris East MCH nurses will work from our South Hawthorn, Ashburton and Canterbury centres. Families who attend Glen Iris East will be offered appointments at these sites for continuity of care.
