DESCRIBE THE PRESENT AND ORIGINAL (IF KNOWN) PHYSICAL APPEARANCE
This abandoned, once handsc:me frame building stands on the west side of White Grounds Road. It is now in derelict cmditicn. The interior has been thoroughly vandalized, and the windcws knocked rut.
The building consists of two secticns. The front block is three bays in length and cne bay in depth. To the back of it is attached a two story ell, both sections were built at the same time. The balloon frame of the house is covered with weatherboards, which were paintec~b~ey. The roof line is accented by a cross gable pediment which contained a ~~11 window- in a diamond design. Similar windcws in the attic of each gable end give the building a more attractive appearance. The other windcws in the building contain double hung sashes with two over two lights. The front door is relatively plain but is accented by a transan light ..
The interior of the building consisqs of three roans down and three up. en the south side is the large auditorium or gathering roan for the members of the 00.d Fellcws' Society. It had been thoroughly vandalized but a old piano with carved legs does remain. en the north side of the building is a small roan in which a bar had been set up. In the bar a boxed stairway leads to the roan above and above the auditorium are two roans, which were presumably used as private meeting rcx:ms for the members. The woc:xlwork inside the building consists of plain tongue and groove siding for pe:titions. In the auditorium, there ·is wainscotting. The roans downstairs and upstairs were heated by stoves which were piped in to a brick flue ascending between the auditorium and the smaller roans 01 the north side.

STATEMENT OF SIGNIFICANCE
This parcel of property is shown on the property map but there is no deed recorded for this tract of land. Therefore, no title search is poss;.. ible. Nonetheless, the building itself can be dated because Mrs. Edna Duffin Johnson who was born in 1891 in the White Grounds ccmnunity recalls that this building was cmstructed for the O:ld Fellows' Society when she was in her 20's. That is, it was probablybuilt between 1915 and 1920, as best as she can remember.
The principal significance of this building is that it is a physical ___vestige of one on the organizations of the historical Black carmunity.
ie to the loss of population in this carmunity, there_ have been no, younger members to replace the older ones, and the Society exists no longer in the White Grounds carmunity. This building ha.vever does remain and its impos-. ing design and relatively handsane appearance -- when it was maintained -reveal the ~ity of the Black carmunity in the White Grounds carmunity.
Like the Loving Charity Hall in the Martinsburg ccmnunity, and in the Jerusalem carmunity, the 0:1d Fellow Iodge was one 6f the principal centers for the Black ccmnunity. This is one of the few buildings of that Society that remain standing in rural Mcntganery County.
