The house surgeons of gov-ernment medical colleges,Chennai, have been on thewarpath for the last one month.Medicos must complete ayear’s internship to earn theirdegree. During internship, theyare posted to different wardsfor an understanding of vari-ous specialties.

The interns, referred to ashouse surgeons, complainedthat they were made to do rou-tine and repetitive tasks suchas administering injections, inserting IV lines, drawingblood for investigation and car-rying blood bags to operationtheatres and collecting x-rays.

The interns also said theywere overworked and ex-hausted. Tomato pricecomes downBy Our Staff Reporter

The price of tomato hascome down and retailers sellthe vegetable at Rs.20 per kg.

S. Parameshwari, housewifeand resident of Central Street,Kilpauk, told this reporter thatshe purchased tomato forRs.17 per kg from a pushcartvendor.

It was sold at Rs.40 per kgjust 10 days ago.

The fall in the price wasmainly due to excessive arrivalof fruits in Koyambedu mar-ket in the past one week.

The market had received 65lorry-loads of the vegetable asagainst the regular 50.

To avoid skirmishes from theongoing Telangana issue, thelorries were diverted fromMadanapallee and Chittor dis-tricts in Andhra Pradesh toKoyambedu, said a hawker.

THE MORE THE MERRIERCutaneous De Bergerac, the legendary swordsman as

depicted in a film by that name that I saw about 50 yearsback at Casino Cinema, had a snout as a role model forfighters which our friend K. Chandrashekhar Rao too isendowed by nature. He has nosed his way into the politicalmap - remaking of good old India in a bloodless coup buttaunting similar surgical thoughts in the minds of theBodoists and Gorkhalandists.

The logic is infallible, namely, if you can have 28 States, plus the next, Telengana, why not extend the ceiling tocover more? Mr.Parliament, I don’t think the Constitutionhas indicated any ceiling on the number of States good oldIndia had been ceded to its great people by Britain. Afterall we are a crawling baby democracy of 66 years and a lotmore exercises remain before we can get off the floor andstart taking the first ambulatory steps, including mis-steps, falls and allied adventures.

Jharkhand, Utterakhand and Chattisghar have beenroaring successes, for they now have their own ChiefMinisters. Utterakhand has, through its nearness to God,as advertised, killed many a fool, all good for the country.

What is good for the country is good for the MakkaI!These factionalists can prove that a new slice of India iscapable of rising as a viable entity. There can be noConstitutional bar to the creation of a new State, for thebillions who burden good old earth are the result of Cre-ation. The question is who wants to create — T.Gana,Bodoman, Ghorkha? Let the creaters’ representatives(not lawyers) prove before a ‘New State Maternity Home”convened by Parliament, comprising apolitical intellec-tual giants who are now in hibernation, like V.R.KrishnaIyer, the Supreme Court jewel that still glitters. Well, letus get going before a political grumpy throws a spanner inthe works.

LETTERS TO THE EDITOR

Make Arya Gowda Road one-way during schoolhours

Sir, There is utter chaos at the junction of Arya Gowda Roadand Ramak-rishnapuram First Street during school openingand closing hours. Impatient parents on their vehicles andprivate school vans and autos brazenly flout traffic rules to tryand reach the schools in time without any concern for others orfor themselves. There is no traffic constable deputed here tocontrol the traffic and safeguard the school children. I suggestthe following measures to reduce the mayhem.

1. Make this road one-way from Arya Gowda Road duringschool hours.

2. Install speed breakers at multiple points onRamakrishnapuram First Street, especially near its junctionwith Arya Gowda Road, to slow down motorists.

3. Install a traffic signal at the junction.4. Depute traffic constables and school volunteers to regulate

traffic. – K. Ramkrishnan, Ramakrishnapuram FirstStreet, West Mambalam

Sir, The house at 128, Vedhachalam Street,Vasudevan Nagar, West Jafferkhanpet, was so farlet out for residential purpose only. Now its owner hasrented it out for commercial purpose to a companydealing in supply of packaged drinking water anddrinking water cans. The company without any ap-proval has started constructing a large warehouse inthe open space in the back yard of the premises.

After we lodged a complaint with the concernedauthorities, the Executive Engineer and AssistantExecutive Engineer of Zone 10 visited the premisesand ordered the company to stop the construction ofthe warehouse and remove the existing structure.

However, in spite of the order, the tenant is continu-ing with the work.

The area was developed by Tamilnadu HousingBoard and sold to Rangarajapuram Housing Society, with the condition that the area is to be used for theconstruction of residential houses only. The construc-tion of a commercial warehouse violates the abovelaid condition and if unchecked, it sets a bad prece-dence for others to violate the rules and convert thecolony into a commercial hub.

Being on a 30 foot road, commercial activities canlead to traffic issues such as parking of vehicles on theroad by commercial establishments, causing hard-ship to the residents.

I appeal to the concerned officials to take suitableaction and stop the unauthorized construction imme-diately. – K. Raghupathy, O 44, Valluvar Street,Thirunagar; Ph: 94861 77426

Garbage collection abruptly halted for two monthsSir, as instructed by Chennai Corporation officials, our resi-

dents were leaving the daily garbage outside our compoundevery morning to be collected by the worker of Ramky EnviroEngineers (contractors of the Corporation). However, for thepast two months the garbage is not being cleared by theconcerned authorities. Though we have reported this to theCorporation several times, no action has been taken so far toresume the garbage collection. It is causing a lot of hardship toour residents and we are forced to walk a long distance to dumpthe garbage in a bin.
