5 Ken-Gar residents arrested for murder after racists attack their community

Ken-G a r , slumlord-owned b l a c k s e c t i o n of Kensington, has long been a f a v o r i t e p l a c e f o r white k i d s to vent t h e i r r a c i s t hate. They l i k e to d r i v e through the a r e a , e s p e c i a l l y on P l y e r s i M l l Road, shouting n i g ­ger and other e p i t h e t s a t the people who l i v e t h e r e . T h i s happens about four times a week.

About two weeks ago, three Whea-ton men, one of whom was about to go i n t o the .Marines, went r i d i n g down P l y e r s / l i l l throwing f i r e c r a c k e r s out of t h e i r car window at the people on the s t r e e t . P l y e r s M i l dead-ends i n Ken-Car, and they were about to t u r n the c a r around when they were approachec by s e v e r a l of the neighborhood people. One of the whites got away, but one of the other two was beaten up and the .Marine r e c r u i t was f a t a l l y shot. F i v e people are charged w i t h murder.

L e t t u c e boycott continues A l o t of people know th e r e ' s a

n a t i o n a l boycott of l e t t u c e going on, but many don't know why. What good does t h i s boycott accomplish

U n i t e d Farm Workers (UFW) c a l l e d the boycott i n l a t e 1970 to help i n t h e i r s t r u g g l e to get un­io n r e p r e s e n t a t i o n for the thousands of migrant workers employed by huge corporate growers.

I n J u l y of 1970, as Ihe grape s t r u g g l e was ending, the U n i t e d Farm Workers p e t i t i o n e d l e t t u c e growers f o r s e c r e t a h l l o t union r e p r e s e n t a ­t i o n e l e c t i o n s . T h e growers ignored the r e q u e s t , sought out the Teamsters union and signed back door c o n t r a c t s . The workers were not c o n s u l t e d . Denied e l e c t i o n s , they went out on s t r i k e on August 24, 1970 to demon­s t r a t e t h a t they wanted to he r e p r e ­sented by Cesar Chavez' UFW. I n the l a r g e s t farm labor s t r i k e i n U.S. h i s t o r y , 7,000 workers walked o f f the job. The s t r i k e only obtained p a r t i a l s u c c e s s f o r the farmworkers, w i t h four l a r g e l e t t u c e companies s i g n i n g c o n t r a c t s w i t h UFW and r e s c i n d i n g the c o n t r a c t s w i t h the T e j m s t e r s . Other growers continued to r e s i s t , even though the Teamsters agreed to recog­n i z e UFW s r i g h t to r e p r e s e n t f i e l d workers.

I n September 17, 1970 a l o c a l S a l i n a s , C a l i f o r n i a judge outlawed a l l s t r i k e a c t i v i t y by the farmworkers. The workers chose to appeal that court order and to continue t h e i r s t r u g g l e by launching a boycott of C a l i f o r n i a -A r i z o n a head l e t t u c e .

The l e t t u c e workers do not want to be represented by the Teamsters he-cause t h a t union i s run by r i c h white f a t c a t s who don't r e a l l y care about the people they are supposed to rep­r e s e n t . They c o l l e c t dues and don't do anything about wages or working c o n d i t i o n s . The UFW i s f i g h t i n g w i t h e v e r y t h i n g i t has to gain good wages and working c o n d i t i o n s f o r the workers.

The farmworkers want tcf be represented byUFW. They know th a t o r g a n i z i n g themselves i n t o a strong union and using non-violent w e l l -placed t a c t i c s , l i k e the e a r l y s t r i k e and the present boycott, i s the only way they w i l l gain decent treatment i n the f i e l d s and good wages.

Y e t the infamous Farm Bureau, an o r g a n i z a t i o n of farmers w i t h m i l ­l i o n s of d o l l a r s worth of h o l d i n g s , and other grower i n t e r e s t s are t r y ­ing to destroy the boycott and make s t r i k e s impossible f o r f a r m w o r k e r s . Through t h e i r e f f o r t s , A r i z o n a , one of the l a r g e s t l ettuce-growing s t a t e s , j u s t passed l e g i s l a t i o n outlawing a l l elements of the secondary boycott and making i t i l l e g a l to encourage some­one to boycott l e t t u c e . I n .Movemher, the people of C a l i f o r n i a w i l l vote on s i m i l a r l e g i s l a t i o n , which makes i t i l l e g a l to even say the words boycott l e t t u c e . Both laws a l s o make i t impossible f o r migrant and s e a s o n a l workers to vote.

The UFV vows to continue the boycott f o r a long time. They know that i n time the C a l i f o r n i a and A r i ­zona growers w i l l want to s i g n con­t r a c t s i n order to s e l l t h e i r l e t t u c e . But before they do t h i s they w i l l have to r e p e a l t h e i r r e p r e s s i v e laws which make i t i l l e g a l to n e g o t i a t e on c e r t a i n s u b j e c t s important to the f a r m w o r k e r s , l i k e h i r i n g h a l l s , pes­t i c i d e s , mechanization.

People who want to help should, most importantly, p a r t i c i ­pate i n the boycott. T h i s means not buying any head or i c e b e r g l e t t u c e , n e a r l y a l l of which i s grown i n C a l i ­f o r n i a and A r i z o n a by non-UFW grow­e r s . Other kinds of l e t t u c e , such as endive, boston and romaine, are not being boycotted. Even some western i c e b e r g l e t t u c e i s f r e e from the boycott, i f i t i s picked by workers under UFW c o n t r a c t s . You can i d e n ­t i f y t h i s l e t t u c e i f i t i s marked w i t h the Aztec e a g l e .

F u r t h e r ways of supporting the boycott i n c l u d e t e l l i n g f r i e n d s , s t o r e managers, r e s t a u r a n t employees, a i r l i n e s tewardesses, e t c . , about i t . T h i s i s the House of M u s i c a l T r a d i t i o n s at 7040 C a r r o l l Ave. i n Takoma Park.

Where e l s e can you get a s i t a r , hand made; a s e t of t a b l a s , a tam-houra, dholak, dumhek, l u t e , d u l c i ­mer, gong, sarod, kalimha, or hag-pipe (bagpipe?). Face i t , how many p l a c e s could even t e l l you what h a l f those things are? Although the HMT has so f a r s p e c i a l i z e d i n f o r e i g n , l a r g e l y I n d i a n , i n s t r u ­ments, banjos and dulcimers and even s t e r e o speakers are being stocked.

The House of MT was s t a r t e d here by Kevin F a r r e l l and David E i s n e r (Maggie's Farm, e t c . ) . Once Kevin was working i n a drum shop when i n walked a drummer from S h a n t i , a raga-type rock hand. (Look 'em up, y o u ' l l l i k e i t . ) T h i s drummer was none other than the sone of A l i a Rakha, t a h l a p l a y e r w i t h Ravi Shankar (remember h i m ? ) . Anyhow he launched i n t o a 20-minute s o l o on the dholak, an I n d i a n hand drum th a t "blew me away" s a i d Kevin. So much tha t he was moved to h i t c h up to New York to the o r i g i n a l HMT which was the only p l a c e you could get those weird t h i n g s around here at the time. One t h i n g l e d to another and Kevin s t a r t e d working t h e r e , s e l l i n g instruments to people l i k e Pharaoh Sanders and the I n c r e d i b l e S t r i n g Band. Becoming s i c k of New York, Kevin conspired with David E i s n e r ( l o c a l entrepreneur and hon v i v a n t ) to b r i n g the HMT to Takoma Park.

"Music tends to he the beginning of good t h i n g s , " s a i d Kevin. Since i t s opening l a s t s p r i n g , HMT has sponsored three n o n - p r o f i t c o n c e r t s . A l l proceeds go to the m u s i c i a n s . The f i r s t was a s i t a r duet f e a t u r ­ing I n d i a n master Ram Chakravarty, another f e a t u r e d Boh Brown and the t h i r d we f o r g e t . Not content to r e s t (even though each concert l o s e s money because of the n o n - p r o f i t p o l ­i c y ) , HMT has planned: Sept. 10, a t a b l a workshop f e a t u r i n g Bada Roy, former student of A l i a Rakha, at the s t o r e a t 3:00 p.m. Sept. 23, a h l u e g r a s s concert at F e l l o w s h i p H a l l , corner of T u l i p and Maple i n Takoma Park at 8 p.m.
