Undoubtedly one of the most iconic drinks, whether shaken or stirred, a Martini is always served very cool and very crisp.

The Dry Martini Cocktail.

A chilled glass; the purest gin or vodka; a touch of Vermouth vigorously stirred together. The only addition is an Olive or Lemon twist.

Have it your way:

Dirty – made with a dash of olive brine or juice.

Wet – heavy on the Vermouth.

Dickens – without an olive or twist.

Gibson – with two cocktail onions.

Bradford – shaken with bitters.

Churchill – Dry Gin, stirred, with an unopened bottle of Vermouth waved above the mixing glass, in other words, very dry.

History. 1806

The earliest recorded use of the word ‘Cocktail’ was made in a New York newspaper, The Balance and Columbian Repository, which responded to a reader enquiry stating “Cocktail is a stimulating liquor composed of spirit of any kind, sugar, water, bitters — it is vulgarly called a bitter sling and is supposed to be an excellent engineering potion, in as much as it renders the heart stout and bold, at the same time that it fuddles the head...a person having swallowed a glass of it, is ready to swallow anything else.”

1839

Samuel Cunard establishes the British North American Royal Mail Steam Navigation Company – known as Cunard Line – principally to carry the Royal Mail to Canada and the United States of America.

1840 Samuel Cunard’s first ship, the 1,154-ton paddle steamer Britannia leaves Liverpool, England, bound for Halifax, Nova Scotia, on the first Transatlantic service.

1859 Samuel Cunard was made a Baronet in recognition of the company’s service in the Crimean War.

1912 Carpathia is the first ship on the scene and rescues all survivors from the White Star Liner Titanic on that tragic April night.

1922 Laconia is the first passenger ship to offer a circumnavigation of the globe – the first World Cruise.

1930 The Savoy Cocktail Book is the first published Cocktail recipe book. It was compiled and annotated by Harry Craddock.

1933 The United Kingdom Bartender’s Guild (UKBG) is created.

1934 Queen Mary is launched in Clydebank, Scotland, by Her Majesty Queen Mary. The first merchant vessel to be named by a member of The Royal Family.

1938 Queen Elizabeth is launched in Clydebank, Scotland, by Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth in the presence of Their Royal Highnesses Princess Elizabeth and Princess Margaret.

1939

Queen Mary and Queen Elizabeth requisitioned by the British Government to act as Troop Ships, carrying over 1.5 million Troops around the world. Sir Winston Churchill paying tribute at the end of World War II stated that the Cunard Queens had shortened the war in Europe by at least a year.

1947

The two Cunard Queens enter regular Transatlantic service.

1940s

In the late 1940s the use of Bitters in Martinis disappeared, and Vermouth became less important as an ingredient.

1960s

An insurgence of spirits with mixers, beers and wine appreciation pushes the traditional Martini to one side.

1967

Queen Elizabeth 2 is launched in Clydebank, Scotland, by Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth II in the presence of His Royal Highness The Duke of Edinburgh and Her Royal Highness Princess Margaret.
