Goodwill Celebrates Pastor's Fifth | Goodwill Baptist church will celebrat^ the fifth anniversary of it*s pastor on Sunday, Feb. 12, at 4:00 p.m. » - The speaker for the occasion will be the Rev. Dennis Bishop, pas¬ tor of First Waughtown Baptist Church. The pastor of Goodwill Baptist i< the Rev. Philemon A. Samuels. Rev. Samuels has been in the ministry for 23 years and has served as associate minister with his father the late Rev. W.E. Samuels at Mars Hill Baptist Church and with his brother, Rev. J.R. Samuels at St. Stephens Baptist church. Samuels came to Goodwill after the retirement of the former pastor, the late Rev. R.Q. Allen. Samuels is a graduate of Win- ston-Salem/Forsyth County Schools. He has attended WSSU, Shaw University, UNC-Chapel Hill, and is currently attending High Point University. He is married to the former Gloria Monk, who is an evangelist and they have two children, Bril and Joi. Since being at Goodwill, a youth choir was started, a youth and young adult department, a Wednes¬ day night children's ministry, church training classes, public rela¬ tions committee and there are plans for a men's, women's and married couples ministry. Church, will celebrate their 113th anniversary, Sunday, February 12. The church grew out 6f door to door class meetings, which started in 1877. St. James A.M.E. Church was formally organized in 1882 and was located on Chestnut St between First and Second St Sunday school will begin at 9:30 a.m. Lesson subject "Jesus is Rejected,** with opening state- meats from Nigel Alston. During the reassembly period, the Young People's department^ under the direction of Veronica Ford, will provide a question and answer period relat¬ ing to the history of the local church. Prayer and praise service, will be led by the "sons and daughters** of the founder of African Methodism, the late Richard Allen who later became the first bishop of the African Methodist Episcopal Church. Candles will burn for each deceased member of the church, who pasted within the last year. Nina Jenerett is in chaige of the memorial service. The featured speaker for the 11:00 a.m. worship service is Dr. L.O. Saunders, presiding elder of the Northern District of the North Carolina Conference of the African Methodist Episcopal Church. Dr. L.O. Saunders is a native of Richlands, North Carolina. Daniel Lovett, chairperson for the occasion, will preside and introduce the speaker. The welcome address will be given by the co-chairperson, Betty Jeffers. The spiritual choir, under the direction of Ronald Hughes, will be in charge of the music. The Rev. Carrington Carter, pastor of St James A.M.E., will bring the closing remarks. Dogbe to Speak Buckner Koma Dogbe, Ful- bright Scholar-in-Residence at Winston-Salem State University, will be the featured speaker at the Annual African American Observance at Grace Presbyter¬ ian Church, Sunday, February 12, 1995 at 4 p.m. He will be joined by Pauline Fulton, who will give tributes, and Alice Allen, guest soloist. The theme is "Nurturing African American t Art/Music and Religion.'* Dogbe is a native of Ghana. He received his training there in art, and he received the Ph.D. degree from St. Andrews Uni¬ versity in Scotland. He is at Winston-Salem State University for the 1994-95 academic year. He is teaching classes in art and Ghanaian subjects, and giving lectures on campus and in the community. He is a recognized sculptor. Thankful Heritage Incorporated is an extraordinary collection of Black Memorabilia art, magazines, articles and other items that gives an in depth chronicle of Black History. The founder of Thankful Heritage Incorporated is Effley Howell. Howell's enthusiasm and love of African American history and culture prompted a hobby that has turned into an impressive collection of Black memorabilia. His exhibit is cur¬ rently being shown throughout the state of North Carolina. In conjunction with the exhibit, St. Paul's youth depart¬ ment will also sponsor a pro¬ gram beginning at noon.
