By Our Staff ReporterChennai Corporation’s plans

to decongest T. Nagar seem tobe stuck in a bottleneck.

Even as World Bank hasasked for fresh reports regard-ing environment issues beforereleasing funds for the proposedpedestrian plaza, the Corpora-tion engineers are struggling toget traffic and parking facilitiesright. The plaza, meant to be awalkers’ paradise, will stretchfrom Panagal Park to AnnaSalai, a distance of 1.4 kilome-tres.

Engineers say it would bepractical to first take up andcomplete the multi-level park-ing project as that has also beenproposed, in the same location,at Panagal Park. But seniorofficials of the corporation arereportedly keen to develop theplaza first as it would take only6 months. The undergroundparking project is likely to takethree years.

An official said that the pri-mary problem once either ofthe work starts is parking is-sues. Even on a normal day, it’sdifficult to manage this areaand traffic diversions are yet tobe worked out, he said.

He said that about seven in-

terior roads have been identi-fied for parking but that toowill create traffic jams as theroads are not that wide.

We are also looking at schoolgrounds, he added. If the multi-level parking is completed be-fore taking up the pedestrianplaza, then it will all be hassle-free, he concluded.

The multi-level parking willcome up at Bashyam Road (T.Nagar), adjacent to PanagalPark.

The facility was initially de-signed to comprise six levelsand be able to hold around 510four-wheelers and 918 two-wheelers. But since the façadeand view of Panagal Park wouldbe affected, the parking lot isbeing re-designed to be madefully underground.

The plaza starting fromBashyam Road near PanagalPark up to Dr. Nair Road in thefirst phase will have will havean exclusive side of the road forcyclists and pedestrians andthe other side for MTC buses. The stretch from Dr. NairRoad through the junction ofNorth and South Boag Roadup to Anna Salai where it endsit will be four track lane for allvehicles and pedestrians.

Just as empty drums make more noise, empty brainsfault the actions of others for their own entertainment, oneinstance of which is the raucous cry of some against. K, theprojected appointment of retired Chief Justice of the Su-preme Court P.Sathasivam as the Governor of Kerala, forno particular reason except that the shouter is exercisinghis right of speech in this great democracy that tolerateshuman and feral noise depending on the capacity of his lung.

To the shouter I ask a very simple question, “Sir, can theGovernor of a small State like Kerala be an individual withhigher learning than the Chief Justice of the highest Courtof India in which capacity he saved the Rajiv killers from thescaffold and ordered the killers to spend the rest of their livesin prison where, instead of being hanged, they will spend therest of their lives doing a bit of work to earn their board andfeeling guilty for having blasted out of this beautiful worldsuch a handsome young Prime minister who did them noharm?”

Sathasivam, I believe, has not, as a Judge of the SupremeCourt, dispatched any killer to the nether world in a tit fortat justicing action, since taking of a human life is, unlessone is a soldier and fighting the country’s enemy in a warwhere you may get killed unless you kill the enemy, and hedid not fancy starting a trend. That was praiseworthy. Iwould have done the same thing which shows that we twohave almost similar names and minds. We do not kill. Itmakes no difference whether the situs is the High Court orthe Supreme Court. As Kerala Governor, his fearlessnesswill shine better. Go ahead Governor Sathasivam. Sadanandis with you!
