Open drain at road junctionposes danger

LETTERS TO THE EDITOR

The cover of the storm water drain has caved in at thejunction of Baroda Street Extn. and Thambiah Road junction,West Mambalam. The opening poses a danger to motorists andpedestrians, especially at night, due to poor visibility.

A couple of metal pipes have been placed in the opening tocaution road users.

Open EB junction box poses danger

Sir, The doors aremissing from the EBjunction box on thepavement of 19thStreet, 4th Avenue,Ashok Nagar.

It poses a gravedanger to unwary pe-destrians, especiallyschool children whopass by regularly.

Will the TNEB offi-cials take immediateaction to close thejunction box on bothits sides to preventany untoward inci-dent. G. Saravanan,Ashok Nagar

CMDA’s rebuff to RTI query bafflingSir, The report under the heading ‘CMDA no to RTI query on

plan for new commercial building’ published last week stated thatthe Chennai Metropolitan Development Authority (CMDA) hasrefused to provide the approved plan diagram of a building comingup on Duraiswamy Road, T. Nagar to an RTI applicant on the pleathat divulging the details will jeopardize the firm’s business. Onedoes not understand in what way the information sought by theRTI activist will harm the business of the firm. The basic object ofthe RTI Act is to empower the citizens, and to promote transpar-ency, accountability in the working of the Government and tocontain corruption. Most govt. departments including CMDA inthis case are making a mockery of the RTI Act by either providingevasive replies or remaining completely silent to the queriesthereby subverting democratic governance. CMDA’s refusal raisesquestions about its credibility and makes one infer that it iscolluding with the builders of commercial buildings who areopenly violating norms. On the one hand, the CMDA says that itdoes not have the manpower to check and curb the widespreadviolations in the construction of buildings, and on the other, itopenly helps the building owners to freely indulge in violationsby turning a blind eye even when instances of violations arebrought to its notice by the public. Safety is more important thanambience. Shoppers, in their own interest, must exercise extremecaution while shopping in these unsafe buildings as they are realdeath traps.

The audit conducted recently at the behest of the High Courtby the Directorate of Fire and Rescue Department has revealedthat almost all commercial buildings in T. Nagar are unsafe fromfire. The court had ordered the department to install boards atsuch buildings, but this too has not been complied with. Does thisnot amount to contempt of Court? K. Harihar, T. Nagar

Vadapalani flyover should be extended uptoLakshman Sruthi signal

Sir, The Vadapalani flyover on Jawaharlal Nehru Road hasreduced traffic congestion to a great extent at Arcot Roadjunction, but the bottleneck continues at Lakshman Sruthisignal junction. The flyover will be more beneficial if it isextended upto Lakshman Sruthi signal junction on Vadapalaniside. Just two pillars are enough to extend the flyover.

Then, from there, it can be further extended to Ashok Pillarvia 4th Avenue. Congestion will then be reduced both atVadapalani junction and Ashok Pillar junction. Dr. K. R.Chidambara Kumarasamy, 53rd Street, Ashok Nagar
