But they said that since June6, no incidents of fire have oc-curred and the demolition workis in progress.

Fire/demolition affects shops nearChennai Silks

As per reports, the total esti-mated loss for Chennai Silksdue to the fire is around Rs. 700crores.

According to Vellayan (Pre-sident, Tamil Nadu TradersAssociation), the estimatedloss does not include the lossesof all the shops/businesshouses, estimated at more than100 in the vicinity, that hadremained closed for three daysafter the fire. Some continue toremain closed as the demolitionof the ravaged building is inprogress.

He said that the TradersAssociation held a meetingwith various authorities for theearly opening of the shops.

“Even after opening, the

footfalls have been poor ascustomers have preferred tostay away for safety reasonsdue to the ongoing demolition ofthe building”, he added. Manyof the shop owners in the closevicinity of Chennai Silks havereported that huge pieces ofconstruction debris from thebuilding which is underdemolition are falling on theirshops.

Some owners have retrievedtheir valuables from the shopand have decided to down theshutters till the demolition iscompleted.

“Our shops are gettingdamaged. We are not sure if wewill be able to start businessagain. We hope to salvage at

least some expensive articlesand equipment,” said Shan-mugam, a shopkeeper.

K. S. Malarmannan (Proprie-tor, Hotel VirudunagarAiyanar, a restaurant whichhas been operating in the areafor over two decades) said thathis business has taken abeating. “The huge chilling unitfor the airconditioners, whichwas kept on the roof-top ofChennai Silks, fell down intothe pile of debris and theneighbouring shops whendemolition work was under-way”, he said. It has also beenestimated that more than1000 employees of the affectedshops may lose their wages tillthe shops reopen.

debris fell in a cloud of smokeand created panic among theworkers. Since the fire, the areahas been cordoned off and resi-dents evacuated from thenearby buildings, and the shopsin the vicinity ordered to re-main closed.

A police officer said that thedebris fell on a hydraulic pipeused by the machine andstarted a leak. The demolitionwas stopped for around 40 min-utes and workers cleaned and

repaired the hydraulic pipe toavoid further accidents due tothe leak.

Fire and rescue services hadsaid the demolition would becompleted in two days. How-ever, the contractor who is en-gaged in the work said it wouldtake another week before itcould be pulled down. As thestructure is damaged in thefire that raged for two days, pulling it down can only be donegradually.

Otherwise, it would lead to acollapse that may endangerother buildings in the vicinity, said an official.

The fire first broke out around4.30 a.m on May 31 and guttedthe building but flames contin-ued to be seen in various partsof the structure in the followingdays, delaying the demolitionprocess.

Social media trollsT. Nagar as‘Thee’ NagarBy Our Staff Reporter

The fire that consumed TheChennai Silks building onUsman Road was fodder foronline trolls which dubbed T.Nagar as ‘Thee’ (fire) Nagar.

On the ground level as well, there was an immediateimpact as the week since thefire incident has seen a muchfewer footfalls of shoppers.

Ranganathan Street, whichis usually abuzz with shoppers, poses an empty look.

Even in further away PondyBazaar area, business hasbeen lukewarm according toshop staff.

A senior member of the localtraders’ association toldMambalam Times that it is aknee-jerk reaction of the public, and normalcy will return in acouple of weeks.

The incident has also ignitedthe anger among theneighbourhood residents whohave long been complainingabout the lax control over theimplementation of safetynorms in the commercialcomplexes.

Many took to Whatsapp,Facebook and other such socialmedia sites to vent their angerand express their opinion.

TNRWA to help residentsaffected by Chennai Silks fireBy Our Staff Reporter

T. Nagar Residents’ Welfare Association has taken up thecause of helping residents living in the vicinity of Chennai Silksto get due compensation for the health and other travails facedby them due to the major fire and the subsequent demolition ofthe building.

Following the fire accident in Chennai Silks, the residents, particularly those who stay in the nearby streets, have had toencounter numerous problems.

A senior member of the Association told Mambalam Timesthat the residents’ day-to-day life has virtually come to astandstill. Many have had to leave their homes/apartments forsafety reasons and have had to put up with inconvenience.

Even after the fire was extinguished, the residents have beenunable to return to their homes because of the ongoing demo-lition of the fire-ravaged building.

Because of the emission of thick smoke when the buildingwas on fire, the residents have had to suffer from severe cough, breathing problems, eye irritation and other related ailments.

Even if the residents feel that the worst is over, one cannotrule out anything now as the smoke that gets emitted fromburning of synthetic material is harmful and can pollute theenvironment for a long time. The dust allergy arising out of thedemolition work is equally serious and could cause variousailments.

So, the Association has decided to reach out to the residentswho are in distress or have been distressed by the accident.

It has requested the residents in general and those affectedby the accident, to write to it giving full details of their sufferingdue to the fire and thereafter and also due to the ongoingdemolition work.

The Association will consolidate the details and take up thematter with the authorities concerned and even move thecourt, if necessary, for compensation.

Residents can send details giving name, full address, mobilenumber/e-mail id to T. Nagar Residents’ Welfare Association,30, Rangan Street, T. Nagar, e-mail: [email protected].

More than 250 policemen and firemen involved in the demo-lition work of Chennai Silks building have complained of eye andthroat infection.

While a majority of them were men in khaki, a few workerswho were involved in the demolition work also approachedhealth officials with minor injuries.

A 15-member medical team from Chennai Corporation hasbeen camping at the site providing immediate medical help.

The medical team has been attending to the men in khakiwith complaints of minor health issues like infection in thethroat and eyes, severe cough and small injuries.

Health officials said that it was due to their continuousexposure to the thick black smoke from the fire and dust fromthe demolition work.

“Some workers who were close to the building got injuriesdue to glass pieces that fell from the building,” a health officialsaid.

Two major projects, AmmaTheater and Amma Market, announced two years back, areyet to take off.

LETTERS TO THEEDITOR

Chennai Silks owners irresponsibleSir, As per media reports, the owners of the

Chennai Silks showroom, which was gutted ina fire accident on May 31, have blamed the firedepartment for delayed action. One of theowners stated that if it had acted swiftly, thedevastation would have been minimal. While they were worried about the loss due tothe fire and the fate of stock-in-trade includingclothes and jewellery, they do not seem to beeven a wee-bit concerned of the possible loss oflives had the accident taken place during peakhours and the lack of fire safety systems in theestablishment which was the cause for thefire.

He further stated that the violations werenot deliberate which, in itself, is an admissionthat there were violations. If the violationswere not deliberate, how did they exte-nd the floors which the CMDA had demolishedearlier? Had the damage been minimal, theowners would have resumed the business afterrenovating the structure and the authoritieswould never have thought of demolition, viola-tions notwithstanding.

The authorities should be thankful to God forhaving destroyed the building constructed withgross violations, resulting in its total demoli-tion, which they would never have dared tothink of, leave alone acting on these lines.

The fire accident must be taken as yet an-other warning and the authorities must nowwake up from their slumber and act with aniron hand against those buildings which havecome up in gross violation of safety norms.

As per the strictures of the High Court, theFire Department is supposed to display boardswarning the public about the lack of fire safetysystems in each of these buildings. Is this beingdone? Lastly, the public must be wary ofshopping in complexes which do not have propersystems so as to safeguard their lives. K.Harihar, T. Nagar

Firewood stocked near ration shopsposes danger

Sir, There is a danger of the two ration shopsHC-007 and HC-009 located off RameswaramRoad, T. Nagar, going up in flames if no action istaken against the jewellery/textile chainwhich makes it a practice of stockingfirewood close to the shops.

The chain has a property close by, where itruns a canteen and provides accommodationfor its staff. They use firewood for cooking andthe vast public space to park their vehicleswhich come very often to unload material.

Most of the time card holders find it difficultto enter the shops because of the blockade ofpublic space by the vehicles. V. S. Jayaraman,Motilal Street, T. Nagar
