15-ft Vinayaga idolto be installed on

Venkatanarayana Road

By Our Staff ReporterVinayaka Chathuruthi Vizha Kuzhu will install a 15-foot tall

Lord Vinayaga idol weighing 300 kg. made of fig fruit and otherorganic materials on Monday, Sept. 2 outside JYM KalyanaMandapam (Venkatanarayana Road, T. Nagar) as part of its29th year Vinayaka Chathurthi celebrations.

‘Kutti’ Ganesan (Founder) told Mambalam Times that specialpoojas will be performed from Sept. 2 to 8.

The idol will be taken for immersion in the sea near Marinabeach at 10.30 a.m on Sunday, Sept. 8. There will beAnnadhanam at noon on the same day.

He said that the Kuzhu has been making huge Vinayaga idolssince 1991. The tallest was a 40-foot idol of plaster-of-Paris in1995.

It had to reduce the height in subsequent years owing toconstruction of flyovers and subways which posed problemsduring the procession for immersion in the sea.

Ganesan said that following directions from Maha Periyavaa, idols are being made only with organic materials which will notharm but become food for marine life after immersion.

He said in the past they have made idols of Bermuda grass(arungampul), coconuts, fruits, vegetables, herbs, paddy, grains(navadanyam), ‘kozhukattai’, jaggery and dates.

Those who wish to join the Kuzhu may contact Ganesan in98847 38184.

Thambiah Road-Brindavan Roadjunction accident-prone

Sir, Frequent accidents are taking place atthe junction of Thambiah Road with BrindavanRoad and Duraisamy Road, West Mambalam.

As there is no traffic signal at the junction, vehicles coming on Brindavan Road from AshokNagar side cross the junction at high speedposing danger to other vehicles and pedestri-ans waiting to cross the junction.

The junction is manned by traffic police onlyduring peak hours.

I appeal to traffic police to install a speedbreaker at the junction to slow down the ve-hicles. T. A. P. Krishnan, West Mambalam

Sir, A stretch of Vijayaraghava Road and G. N. Chetty Road is one-way towards Anna Salai. To avoid taking a detour via Dr. B. Narasimhan Road, G. N. Chetty Road and Mayor Sundar

Rao Road to reach Anna Salai, many auto-drivers and motorcyclists violate the one-way rule.It puts the life of other motorists and pedestrians at risk.I have also seen 2-wheeler riders often riding on the pavement during peak hours to get ahead

of the traffic.Similarly, at the junction of G. N. Chetty Road and Dr. B. Narasimhan Road, motorists coming

from Gopathy Narayana Salai drive in the wrong direction increasing the risk of accidents.I appeal to traffic officials to take strict action against the violation of one-way traffic on

Vijayaraghava Road and G. N. Chetty Road. L. Varadarajan, 11th Avenue, Ashok Nagar

Civic issues affect pedestrianson Madley Road

Sir, There are several civic issues in thestretch of Madley Road between T. Nagar BusTerminus and Madley Subway.

Garbage is dumped on road margins and thepavements are encroached upon.

Vendors occupy the narrow service lanes, blocking the way for road users. There arehouses, schools, a college and several shopsand commercial establishments on this stretchapart from T. Nagar police station.

The stairways of Madley Road subway arelittered with trash and water stagnates on thesubway even after mild showers.

The service lane on Saravana Furniture sideis often littered with garbage and the road getsslushy and slippery after rains. The junction ofPolice Quarters Road and Madley Road, next toT. Nagar bus terminus stinks, as it has beenconverted into an open urinal.

I appeal to Chennai Corporation to takeimmediate steps to set right the civic issues onMadley Road. Raghavi, 7/3, Madley Road, T.Nagar

One-way rule violated on Vijayaraghava Road, G. N. Chetty Road

No quality checks on roadsideeateries

Sir, Fast-food stalls and roadside eateriesare on the increase at street corners incommercial areas in the neighbourhood andalso near Mambalam railway station and T.Nagar bus terminus.

There is no inspection of the quality, hygieneand the safety aspects of the food prepared andserved in these stalls. Further, theseunauthorized outlets also litter thesurroundings and let the food waste into stormwater drains.

Officials of the Department of Food Safetyand Drug Administration should inspect theseoutlets to ensure that they operate under properlicense and also serve food of the prescribedstandards. V. S. Narayanaswamy, MotilalStreet, T. Nagar

No updates on ‘Smart Meter’ project Sir, In November last year, Tamilnadu

Electricity Board had announced that it willinstall ‘Smart Meters’ in 1.44 lakh houses in T.Nagar.

But since then there has been no progress onthis front. May I appeal to TNEB to clarifywhen it will implement the ‘Smart Meter’ projectin T. Nagar. V. S. Narayanaswamy, MotilalStreet, T. Nagar

Overhead barricade without crossbarserves no purposeBy Our Staff Reporter

The damaged crossbar of an overhead barricade at the entrance to the bridge acrossDuraisamy Subway (T. Nagar) was removed a year back.

But it has not been replaced and heavy vehicles are entering the service lane to take a U-turn over the bridge.

The crossbar at the other end of the bridge is also damaged.According to nearby residents and some vendors, the bridge was not designed to withstand

the load of heavy vehicles and their regular plying over it may weaken the bridge. They have appealed to Chennai Corporation to install the missing crossbar and also replace

the damaged one immediately.

More payment gateways to ease bookingunder ‘Dial for Water’ serviceBy Our Staff Reporter

Following complaints about difficulty in booking water tankersonline, Metrowater plans to add more payment gateways to resolveonline payment issues in its ‘Dial for Water 2.0’ service.

The new service was launched a month back to prevent duplicationof booking from the same premises and reduce waiting time for delivery.

However, Metrowater received a number of complaints regardingdifficulty in booking as well as online payment which included inabilityto open the website and non-receipt of OTP for both booking andpayment. In several incidents, though the payment got debited, thebooking was not completed.
