STUDIO PROFILE

MAB Arquitectura is an architectural firm founded by Floriana Marotta and

Massimo Basile in 2004 and based in Barcelona and Milan.

The office works within the private and public field, moving between the ar-

chitecture of residential buildings, schools, offices and planning at urban

and landscape scale.

The two founders studied both in Italy at the University of Architecture of

Palermo and later in Marseille, at the École d’Architecture de Luminy. In

1999, Floriana Marotta started collaborating with the Établissement Pub-

lique d’Aménagement Urbain Euromediterranée in Marseille. In Barcelona,

they worked in the offices of Oriol Bohigas (MBM Arquitectes) and Carlos

Ferrater (OAB), developing projects in Spain, Italy and France. These pro-

fessional experiences deeply shaped the formation of the two young archi-

tects. After 2009, MAB started a deep collaboration with LAPS Architecture

, a Paris-based office, working on a wide range of operations in France,

and with Beretta Associati studio, based in Milan, for italian projects.

The approach of the office is based on the research of a unique, pragmatic

and site-specific architecture imbued with a strong identity, developed

from user needs and totally respectful with the urban conditions where it is

conceived. The studio research focuses on the eco-neighbourhood topic,

the reuse and transformation of buildings and brownfields as a contempo-

rary requirement and as a sustainable development strategy.

Among the most relevant works, the Social Housing and Public Park

project in via Gallarate, Milan, The Patronage Laïque, Cultural

Centre and social housing for young workers in Paris, Leone XIII resi-

dential building in Milan, Borgo Italiano, residential and commercial

complex in Timisoara - Rumania.

The Via Gallarate project was invited at the Italian Pavilion “AILATI - Ri-

flessi dal futuro” at the XIIth Biennale di Architettura of Venice,

2010, and was exhibited in several expositions in Milan and published on

several world-known magazine, such as Domus, Casabella, A+T, Bauwelt.

It was awarded with the INARCH-ANCE 2011 Prize and nominated for

the Mies van der Rohe Award 2011.

The Patronage Laïque was exposed in the exhibition Habiter 2011 at the

Pavillon de l’Arsenal (Paris, 2012) and at the XIVth Biennale of Archi-

tecture in Venice(2014) Italian Pavillion, in the section Grafting/In-

nesti. The Patronage Laïque was awarded with the INARCH-ANCE 2014

Prize, and with the CNAPPC Prize Honourable Mention.

RECOVERING THE PUBLIC AND COMMUNAL DOMAIN OF THE NEIGHBORHOOD

The main aim was to create a new ‘urbanity’ inside a marginal and suburban area of

the city through a new and innovative concept of neighbourhood.

CREATION OF A NEW URBAN AND SOCIAL CONSCIOUSNESS

PARK+ APARTMENTS+PUBLIC SERVICES+RETAIL

The park is designed with a strong connection with the city and the public spaces,

creating a direct relation with the newly constructed blocks. The density of the

buildings allows a good distance between the blocks , in a way that they don’t face

the already existing residential slabs.

SUSTAINABLE DEVELOPMENT AND HI-QUALITY CONSTRUCTION STANDARDS

“CasaClima classe B” standard; acoustic protection of the park and of the blocks;

elimination of the vis-à-vis between the blocks; high-performance shell; local

SOCIAL HOUSING – SETTIMO TORINESE – TORINO

IDENTITY OF THE NEW DISTRICT is determined by a balanced synthesis

between public, mixed and urban density functions. The Boulevard

assumes a central role in the definition of urban identity.

THE STRATEGY OF THE PROJECT is the result of studying the fluxes. The project

of void spaces,

the impalpable movement of people, social spaces,… determine a virtual grid

where the volumes will be strategically placed. Three aspects determine the quality

of the intervention: the ratio between the built volume and the empty space, the

urban typologies that define semi-private spaces within a larger system and the

volumetric articulation of buildings

sketching the new district skyline.

CASCINA MERLATA RESIDENTIAL BLOCK

Cascina Merlata is an eleven-storey apartment building located on the South side

of a new residential, offi ce and cultural masterplan close to the Expo 2015 site.

The building accommodates 92 apartments for sale and two levels of underground

parking.

The block has a wonderful position on the masterplan: totally surrounded by the

green of the park, has beautiful sights towards the countryside on the East and

West side, and moreover for its proximity to the old “Cascina Merlata”, an histori-

cal place soon to be transformed in cultural centre.

AIMS

- Compact and recognizable plot

- Clearly defi ned public, common and private spaces

- New physical and visual connection with Cascina Merlata, the park and Via Gal-

larate

- High construction standard for new and lasting urban models.

STRATEGY

- Volumetric articulation

- Best solar illumination possible

- Visual connection towards the landscape

- Reduction of the ‘vis-à-vis’

- Creation of a skyline, adding complexity and richness to the intervention

- Strong and recognizable external shell and warmer materials in the patio, creating

a closer and more intimate space.

URBAN STRUCTURE OF THE AREA: The project aims to defi ne and arrange

the current structure of the Manzù street, restore the alignment of the road and

provide the area with some quality public spaces giving a unitary reading of this

badly articulate area.

RAILWAY AND NORTH BUILDINGS: The project takes into account the presence

of the railway line and the buildings on the north side, minimizing the visual

impact and noise on the area. This was achieved through the creation of two

green fi lter areas, the strategic location of the volumes within the lot, the study

of the sections, the heights and the visuals.

ACCESS AND CIRCULATION: the access to the area is located in the intersection

of Pestagalli and Manzù Street. The vehicular traffi c is led to an interior street

accessing the underground parking. The movement within the area is exclusively

pedestrian.

VOLUMETRIC ARTICULATION: The project proposes linear buildings GF+ 4

and GF+11 storey towers, creating a rich volumetric composition, ensuring the

best possible insulation and controlling the shadows between the buildings .

REALIZATION BY PHASES: Possibility to divide the intervention site into three

areas so as to be able to proceed in stages for the design and construction of

the project.

VIA PIRANESI RESIDENTIAL TOWERS

Beretta Associati won the 1st prize for this competition launched by Generali Real

Estate in 2009.

MAB Arquitectura joined the team in the following phase, collaborating in the study

and development of the façade, the drawing of the balconies and the defi nition of

the ground fl oor and of the common public space.

A continuous canopy allows an uninterrupted lecture of the whole complex, creat-

ing a covered passage to the entrances of the residential towers.

The patio garden was drawn keeping in mind the reference to Milan historic courts,

reading it with an innovative and contemporary concept, characterized by sinuous

and natural lines. The material alternation of the garden defi nes the different func-

tional areas; below the towers and the patio lies the underground parking.

The façades have two kind of languages: the ones facing the urban front, towards

the street, keep the clarity of the volumes and are enriched by loggias hollowed out

in the building shell; the ones towards the interior court, open with large balco-

nies defi ned by a curvilinear geometry that respond to a geometric rule that varies

at each level. The solar protection of the balconies is obtained through sliding

wooden shutters.

RESIDENTIAL COMPLEX IN MOSNITA NOUA

The project is located in an area of further expansion of the city. It is a residential

hi-standard housing scheme including 87 villas, a club house with restaurant,

private swimming pool, playground areas for children, and a commercial centre.

The intervention offers a high functional diversity through the integration of com-

mercial areas, public spaces, and playground and sport facilities. A huge attention

is given to the landscape and green areas concept, optimizing the construction

systems and the separation of public and private spaces.

The project turns the strictly linear structure of the allotment into a compelling

radial structure, reducing so the vis-à-vis between the houses and giving a high

landscape quality.

All the different typologies of houses (family houses, semidetached, row houses)

were designed with simple systems to accelerate the execution time and to opti-

mize the realization of the home. Each unit opens towards a large garden which

achieves a high level of privacy. All the houses are designed for a Classe A label

(KlimaHouse standard) and will be constructed with high-performance thermic

shell, wood roof structure and solar panels.

The project adapts the existing spaces of the Ragen House to accommodate the

new program. The current covering of the court will be replaced by a double skin

glass roof supported by a steel structure.

The extension of the School of Music is a compact building covering the area

of the competition, leaving the garden as an intermediate space between the two

buildings.

The image of the project will be a pure white volume in harmony with the sur-

roundings. This abstract shape will be covered with a white jealousy; because

of its simplicity and purity it emphasizes the grandeur of the Ragen house and

the buildings that surround it. Inside, the wooden finitures provide warmth to the

classrooms and hallways.

The project was created specifi cally for minimal interventions on the existing

structures. The project proposes a compact volume with a pitched roof that adapts

itself in order to connect and integrate with the existing building. The idea is the

one of a complex single building, rich in exchanges between fl uxes and functions.

All trees in the courtyard are preserved and activity islands are created around

them with a rubber colored pavement, this way all the outdoor functions of the

school will be fulfi lled.

RIVP - ILOT DES MARINIERS BROUSSAIS 14ème

This project is part of a major urban development of the old Broissas Hopital,

including the construction of a new green promenade that will cover the Petite

Ceinture, and a new masterplan where the functional, cultural and social mix is

the main aim.

PROGRAM

Two housing blocks with apartments for sale, a student housing block, two social

housing blocks, a kindergarten and a community centre.

AN ARCHITECTURAL ENSAMBLE FOR A STRONG IDENTITY

Facing the different architectures that surround the plot, the new intervention has

to appear without adding visual and architectural confusion to the heterogeneous

character of the urban tissue.

COMPOSITION THROUGH VOIDS

The keywords are: fl uidity, fl exibility, transparency, permeability.

Its composition is based on a river metaphor. The river splits the trapezoidal plot,

ramifying in two smaller streams on the North-South axe (between the promenade

and rue des Mariniers) and fl ood into the foyer of rue Diderot. A valley is created

by the fl ow of the river.

The banks are surrounded by a succession of terraced levels: terrazas and prom-

ontories are created, shaped by the fantasy of the erosion. The territory is irrigated

by many canals letting a fl owing organization; the geography of the voids works

as connecting network.

Thanks to this approach you can stroll through the block and light, air, sights can

fl ow freely. The interior breathes despite its density; the variation of the heights and

the terraced fl oors break the composure of the façade; the interior void gets bigger.

The block is totally permeable.

THE NEW CITÉ: A NEW ENSEMBLE, A NEW UNITY

The project defi nes a new organization for the Cité Universitaire trying to solve its

actual disgregation, through a redefi nition of the exterior spaces and of the ground

fl oor redefi ned as connection between the campus buildings.

THE PORCH AS CONNECTING ELEMENT

The designed covered connection, the main element of the project, defi nes at the

same time the internal borders of the park, the external borders of the existent

campus and the accesses, moreover, defi nes and embrace all the new building. It

is an element with a strong identity that enlightens and strengthens the true core of

the Cité: the park and its paths.

THE NEW STUDENT HOUSING

The new block is the result of a refl ection over the common spaces and the re-

lations between the students, It is composed by an aggregation of living units,

organized around a space expanded and compressed by an interior street, the

public ground of each fl oor. Some huge triple-height spaces create visual and as

well physical relations between students living on different levels.

Inside the framework of the restricted competition for the new Bologna Railway and

the reorganization of the surrounding areas, MAB has developed the program of

the new Directional Centre, along with a new luxury hotel and a congress hall, for

a total built surface of 90.000 sqm. For this intervention, MAB decided working

on an urban scheme based on a block-patio-street element, typical of the city of

Bologna.

The pure geometry of the complex answers to three strong rules:

- the continue façade towards the railway tracks and the city

- the reconstruction of an urban front towards the railway, through the creation of

a new linear park

- the porosity on the ground fl oor that allows the fl uidity of the connections through

different blocks.

The blocks rise punctually with 40-meters-high towers, that give an interesting

and dynamic perspective for the ones that arrive with the train and for the people

walking along the street.

The glazed towers, with a brise-soleil system working with vertical translucent

blades, host all the executive functions, while the three-storey block work as me-

diator between the city and the human scale.

URBAN MIX

The refl ection over the contemporary city as a place of coexistence of different

uses and different activities let us think that creating a new part of the city means

combining all these different functions inside the same buildings. This complexity

is refl ected in the image of the project.

- GROUND FLOOR, PUBLIC AND RETAIL SPACES

The public character of the ground fl oor, transparent and permeable, create a

strong network of social relations and urban connections, and host the commercial

and service areas. The shifting between the façade of the ground fl oor and the one

of the building above create a porch with changing width.

- FIRST FLOOR, OFFICES

A continuous passageway creates a lively urban front, accommodating all the

entrances to the offi ces, working as a lifted public space.

- RESIDENTIAL FLOORS

The movement of the volumes and the different treatment of the façade defi ne and

underline the changes in the program.

- THE SLENDER GLAZED TOWER

The whole complex is dominated by this residential glazed tower, icon of the whole

AIMS

Convert a suburban and residual area of the city.

Resolve the connections between the urban and the rural milieu.

STRATEGIES

- Generation of a new topography

- Reinterpretation of an existing landscape, without the imposition of out-of-scale/

out-of-site objects

- Connection and linking of the different pedestrian fl uxes

- Connection of isolated areas

A TOPOGRAPHYC-GENERATED BUILDING

The park is lifted and generates two small hills that host all the requested program.

This proposal tries to solve the needs of the people living in the neighbourhood:

it is not necessary to create a new space, but to improve and handle the intrinsic

qualities and solve the problems of the site. The central space, public and conti-

nuous, organizes the fl uxes, remembering the shape and topography of a valley.
