Comparar a Michel con un camaleón es lo primero que me vino a la cabeza al terminar mi charla con él. En la mejor

acepción del término, Michel es un camaleón por su capacidad de adap-

tación. Como él dice «llegas a un sitio con unas ideas, pero poco a poco todo

va cambiando, y cambian tus ideas porque tú también cambias… Te muda

hasta la piel».

Su relación con el mar también ha seguido una adapta-ción que empezó en los veranos de su infancia, cuando viajaba desde Bélgica, donde residía, hasta Grecia, para visitar a parte de su familia. Ahí empezó su andadura en el buceo y el windsurf, por su propio pie, ya que en su familia no había afición por los deportes náuticos.A los 24 años (1986) vino por primera vez a Fuerteventura de vacaciones y quedó enamorado. Al regresar a Bélgica, no tardó ni dos meses en conseguir una furgoneta y venir-se a vivir a las playas majoreras. Empezó trabajando en el bar Coco Banana, que en la actuali-dad se conoce como Rock Island, y después trabajó en Shoo-ting Gallery, una tienda de windsurf en el Muelle Chico de Corralejo, a la vez que empezaba a pintar, con su compañera de aquella época, camisetas con plantillas, que poco a poco irían transformando en la primera empresa de serigrafía de Fuerteventura, con trabajos para No Work Team, René Egli y muchos otros. Después, la vida le llevó a dejar ese negocio y

empezar con el alquiler de tablas de surf de calidad: Surftech Fuerteventura, para ofrecerle a los visitantes la opción de no tener que viajar con sus tablas y poder alquilarlas aquí, pro-yecto que continúa activo a día de hoy.Pero sus cambios en la vida no han sido solo laborales; en relación a los deportes su afición por el windsurf se fue transformando en afición por el surf. Michel fue de los pri-meros en ir a surfear a Lobos; recuerda cómo con Jürgen Hönscheid iban a surfear hasta el islote, con una embarca-ción que Jürgen se había fabricado con dos tablas de wind. Al principio no se atrevían a subir a la ola de arriba y se quedaban en El Marrajo. ¡Los dos solos en medio de seme-jante paraje natural! «Era una época en la que buscabas a gente para no tener que ir al agua solo. En general se solía surfear en los alrededores de Corralejo: El Bristol, El Muelle, Punta Helena cuando entraba, y Mejillones. Poco a poco empezaron a venir ingleses y empezaron a tirarse en El Hierro. Y dicen que los alemanes descubrieron La Derecha

Comparing Michel to a chameleon was the first thing that came to my mind after finishing my conversation with him. Considering the best meaning of this word, Michel is a chameleon because of his adaptability. As he says «you get to a place with ideas that change little by little because you change too... even your skin changes».

His relationship and adaptation to the sea started in his childhood Summers, when he travelled from Belgium, where he lived, to Greece, in order to visit some relatives of his. There he started his surfing and diving experiences on his own, as there was no passion for water sports in his family. When he was 24 (1986) he came to Fuerteventura on holiday for the first time and he stayed, in love with the island. After returning to Belgium he didn’t even take two months to get a van and come to settle on «majorera» beaches. He started working at Coco Banana Bar, which nowadays is known as Rock Island, and then he worked at Shooting Gallery, a surf shop in muelle chico, Corralejo, as he was starting out in painting, with his partner then, making t-shirts with template, and little by little this would become the first screen printing company in Fuerteventura, working for No Work Team, René Egli and many others. Then life made him leave this business and start with quality surfboards rental: Surftech Fuerteventura, in order to offer visitors the option to travel without their boards and hire them here, a project still working nowadays. But his changes in life have not only been related to work; regarding sports, his passion for windsurf turned into a passion for surf. Michel was one of the first people surfing in Lobos; he remembers how he and Jürgen Hönscheid went to the islet to surf, on a boat that

de los alemanes, aunque debería llamarse La Derecha del belga —comenta entre risas—, porque estuve surfeando allí, prácticamente solo, durante 4 o 5 años». Michel fue también pionero con el SUP en la isla. En cuan-to estalló la fiebre del SUP en Europa, se hizo con una tabla y un remo, y comenzó a aventurarse en una nue-va evolución camaleónica de su surfing. Esto le permitió volver a sentir la sensación de antaño, cuando surfeaba prácticamente solo, pues había nuevos picos que explotar para esta nueva disciplina acuática.Al preguntarle que cómo ha vivido la masificación que tene-mos ahora en muchos spots, nos dice amablemente que «la evolución que ha seguido la isla con el surfing es la evolusurfing es la evolusurfing -ción normal que debía seguir. Se han descubierto olas bue-nas y, aunque antes era una maravilla ir a surfear casi solo, tenemos la responsabilidad de compartir este paraíso con todos los que nos quieran visitar, más aún teniendo claro que en un sitio como este debemos estar muy agradecidos a toda esta gente que nos visita, porque en realidad ellos son los que hacen posible que vivamos aquí». En relación al localismo defiende la existencia de unas normas de respeto y seguridad en el agua, pero no comparte los métodos alterados y agresivos de muchos «locales», ya que opina que todo se puede enseñar con

buenos modos y educación. «Yo el localismo lo compa-ro al cortejo de una mujer, aunque parezca un comenta-rio un poco machista: hay muchos machos esperando la misma ola y entran en juego orgullos humanos, la nece-sidad de destacar, la chulería… y eso es algo que tiene más que ver con orgullo que con normas de surf.»En la actualidad Michel regenta El Arco Surf Café de La-jares, un rinconcito acogedor donde ofrecen deliciosos desayunos y comidas, en un ambiente ameno y surfero, y que se ha transformado en una profesión que le gusta cada día más.En Macaronesia te agradecemos que compartas tu historia de tantos años en la isla con todos nosotros y esperamos que siempre encuentres nuevas motivaciones que te ha-gan seguir evolucionando y adaptándote, con esa tem-planza que te caracteriza.

Jürgen had made himself out of two wind boards. In the beginning he didn’t dare go to the further wave and he stayed in El Marrajo. Just the two of them in the middle of such natural beauty! «It was a time when you looked for people not to go alone into the water. Generally people used to surf around Corralejo: El Bristol, El Muelle, Punta Helena when it was there, and Mejillones. Then British people started to come and surf in El Hierro. It’s said that German people found out «La Derecha de los alemanes» (the right of the German), although it should be called «la Derecha del Belga» (the right of the Belgian) —he says as he giggles—, as I was surfing there on my own for at least four or five years». Michel was also a pioneer of SUP in the island. When the SUP rush sprang in Europe, he got a board and an oar and he started to experience a new chameleonic evolution of his surfing. This allowed him to experience again that old-time feeling, when he surfed almost on his own, as there were new spots to exploit for this new water sport. When we asked him about how he had experienced the wen we have now in many spots, he says very kindly «the evolution of the island regarding surfing is the normal evolution it should follow. Great waves have been found out and although before it was a wonder to surf almost

on your own we have the responsibility to share this paradise with all the people who want to visit us, most of all bearing in mind that in a place such as this one we must be grateful to all our visitors, as they are the ones who make it possible for us to live here». Regarding localism, he supports the existence of rules of respect and security in the water, but he doesn’t share the aggressive and pushy methods practised by many «locals», as he thinks that everything can be taught with good moods and kindness. «I compare localism to the wooing of a woman, although it may seem a male chauvinist comment: there are lots of men waiting for the same wave and human pride comes into play, the need to stand out, insolence... which have to do with pride rather than with surf rules». Nowadays Michel runs Arco Surf Café in Lajares, a cosy slice of paradise where he offers delicious breakfast and other meals in an enjoyable surfer atmosphere, and this has become a profession he is enjoying more and more every day. As we have already known for some time, the situation in the real estate market is now most profitable as far as the purchase of dwellings is concerned, as prices, after having been falling for years, have reached their limits, even some of them have started to increase due to the growing demand of people who have lost their fear to invest in Spain, and because of the provision of appropriations by financial institutions, who want to grant mortgages and make new clients, thus invigorating the economy.

For some months now we have had a Professional language school in Lajares, where they teach French and Spanish for foreigners.

Its owner, Charmet Pascale, Bachelor in Literature and Spanish and Latin American Civilizations, has a wide experience as a Spanish teacher in different centres in France and Spain, and in her courses she follows the syllabus offered by «El Instituto Cervantes». The language school is placed in a privilege setting, with breathtaking views in an ecological zone under Calderón Hondo volcano. The educational offer follows two different lines: one line is focused on residents who want to learn Spanish or French on weekly lessons or on an intensive course; group classes (no more than six people) or one-to-one lessons. A second line is focused on foreigners who want to come to Fuerteventura to learn Spanish, combining this teaching with the practice of the star sports in the island, taught at several schools in Lajares by the well-known windsurf champion Raoul Lequertier. There are all kind of accommodation offers at everybody’s reach (from just renting a room to an apartment with all conveniences), and they also offer the possibility to put up students (18-45 years old) at several resident families, so they can really immerse themselves in the learning of the Spanish language and culture (if you are interested in being one of these families contact Pascale).

Hace 6 meses abrió sus puertas en Corralejo esta clínica dental, dirigida por el dentista tinerfeño Jonay Carazo Oramas, residente en nuestra querida Fuerteventura desde hace ahora 10 años.

Jonay lleva la vocación en los genes, ya que su abuelo era también dentista y su tío sigue ejerciendo en Tenerife. Al llegar a Fuerteventura y enamorarse del encanto de esta isla, Jonay ha estado trabajando durante 10 años en una clínica de Puerto del Rosario. Pero a él siempre le gustó la vida del norte, así que, tras darle algunas vueltas, decidió montar una clínica dental en Corralejo, ya que muchos de los pacientes que le llegaban a Puerto del Rosario iban desde esta zona de la isla, y pensó en ofrecerles un servicio de calidad mucho más cerca de sus hogares.Nada más entrar en CDC te invade una sensación de sa-lud, limpieza, y también de familiaridad porque, lejos de la idea que muchos tienen del dentista como alguien serio y distante, en CDC, el equipo de profesionales enseguida te da confianza. Además hablan en español, alemán, inglés y también un poco de italiano, para que la comprensión sea total.

Colaboran con la clínica cuatro dentistas, dos ortodon-cistas y otros dos implantólogos, cubriendo así todas las especialidades; y además cuentan también con dos higie-nistas. Jonay nos revela que en CDC se trabaja con lo mejor de lo mejor; maquinaria de última generación, implantes de las marcas más punteras del mercado (Straumann y NobelBio-care), ortodoncia invisible (Invisalign)… Y además ofrece una garantía en todos sus tratamientos, seguro de la cali-dad de su servicio. Al preguntarle algún consejo como dentista, nos comenta que la prevención es lo más importante, ya que la boca es fundamental para todos los aspectos de nuestra vida diaria. Acudir al dentista habitualmente es la mejor ma-nera de evitarnos la aparición de problemas mayores. Nos asegura, que llevando un control periódico, visitando al dentista al menos una vez al año, muchos problemas pue-den ser detectados en fase leve, de manera que la solución sea más fácil y cómoda. Six months ago this dental surgery opened its doors in Corralejo, run by a dentist from Tenerife, Joany Carazo Oramas, resident in our dear Fuerteventura for ten years now.

Jonay’s profession runs in his genes, as his grandfather was also a dentist, and his uncle still works as a dentist in Tenerife. After getting to Fuerteventura and falling in love with this island’s charm, Jonay settled down and he has been working for ten years at a dental surgery in Puerto del Rosario. But he always liked the life in the North, so after thinking it over he decided to set up a dental surgery in Corralejo, as lots of his patients in Puerto del Rosario came from this part of the island and he thought about offering them a quality service much closer to their homes. As soon as you get into CDC, a feeling of health, cleanliness, and familiarity overcomes you, and far from what many people think about a dentist being serious and distant, the professional team in CDC is very friendly. Besides, they speak Spanish, German, English and a little Italian, so

they can communicate with all their clients. Four dentists collaborate with this dental surgery, two orthodontists and two implantologists, thus covering every odontological speciality; they also count on two hygienists.Jonay reveals us that in CDC they work with top quality equipment: new generation machinery, implants of the most challenger brands in the market (Straumann and NobelBiocare), invisible orthodontics (Invisalign).. and moreover they offer a guarantee in all their treatments, confident of the quality of their service.
