T imet UK, one of the world’s majorsuppliers of high quality titanium, has
taken delivery of a large, special-purposeCutmaster semi-automatic abrasive disccut-off machine for its production site inSwansea.
The new abrasive sawing system isdesigned to fast-cut 13-105 mm titaniumbar direct from the production line tospecific customer requirement and toprovide samples for laboratory testing.
CONSISTENT HIGH QUALITYTimet needs to ensure the consistent highquality of bar stock leaving theproduction line, so a length of titaniumbar from every batch produced is testedbefore material is put into stock fordelivery.
Using a 600 mm diameter abrasivewheel, the cut-off machine is designedfor heavy duty, high speed production, where high quality titanium has to becut-to-length quickly, accurately andcleanly. During the cutting operation,

materials are held firmly in position bysingle or twin spring return hydraulicvices.
Data for hydraulic pressure and flow, along with cut and return times, can beoptimised and programmed into a PLCdata register, allowing the operator tobatch cut any number of materialspecifications at the touch of a button. The interface screen also provides
intelligent manual control of the cuttingcycle.
Designed, manufactured and suppliedby Birkett Cutmaster, the new Cutmastersemi-automatic chop-stroke abrasive cut-off machine incorporates an integral dustand fume filter system to ensure fullcompliance with Health & Safetyrequirements.
Shown for the first time at last
month’s EMO exhibition (full review andproduct launch supplement next issue)was theKaltenbach KDS1015/KBS1010DGstructural steel close-coupledbandsawing/multi-axis drilling line. It is ahighly efficient medium to heavy-dutyprocessing centre that operates from asingle touch-screen CNC control console.
FAST AND SHARPENABLEThe KDS uses the company’s new own-brand, specially developed ‘solid-carbide’drills. Solid-carbide drills cut atphenomenally high speeds; five timesfaster than HSS and twice as fast as TCT,with the significant benefit that they canbe sharpened many times, unlike TCT.The KDS is claimed to be the fasteststructural drill in the world.
The 3-axis, 15-tool drilling system hasbeen developed from the established KDrange, and upgraded to make best use ofthe far higher cutting speeds of solid-

Push-me-pull-you saw concept
The new Saws UK Alligator All Wheel Drive (AWD) range of bandsaws is capable ofcutting material to a tolerance of 0.1 mm with an exceptional surface finish.
The Alligator CNC controlled bandsaw is available in four variations; the AWD 4.2CNC, the 6.2 CNC, 8.2 CNC and the 10.2 CNC with a cutting diameter in 90° of 410, 620 ,820 and 1,020 mm, respectively.
The AWD concept sees the blade pulled as well as pushed. This delivers anincreased level of power that considerably enhances cutting performance, improvesblade life, productivity and accuracy while reducing noise levels.

carbide drills. The new machine seesspindle power increased to 15 kW; feedrates of up to 1,000 mm/min; positionalspeeds doubled; and machine stabilityfurther enhanced to readily support thehigher cutting loads.
The KBS band sawing range cutsstraight and on the mitre, left and right, across a range of material capacities from420, 620, 750 and 1,010 mm wide when90º cutting, achieving a clean, accuratecut-to-length finish.
A new auto-sorting table is anoptional extra for adding to the saws’output side to automatically sortprocessed parts and short pieces.
Remote operation was alsodemonstrated, enabling fully remoteoperator control via the Internet, withvisual management via strategicallyplaced cameras.
Another key feature and optionallyintegrated item for the KDS and KD
drilling systems, is ‘contour marking’ aspecially developed etching process, driven by high-speed pneumatics. It canmark either the full profile or cornerpositions, as preferred, of any fittings orplates, etc, to be welded or attached tostructural columns, beams or channels. The process removes one of the lastremaining labour intensive operationswithin the steel fabrication industry.
PROCESSING STREAMLINER Steel stockholder Hall & Pickles’ Poynton,Manchester, facility has installed its firstautomatic bandsaw to help streamlinethe processing of the 1,500 tonnes ofmainly BS4360-43A and -50B steel ithandles each month.
The German-built machine KASTOtecA4 replaces two manually operatedbandsaws from the same manufacturerthat have been operating successfully forover 25 years.
Production planning and controlmanager Ian Wilson comments: "Theprogrammable KASTOtec A4, which usesconventional bimetal blades, is able tosaw twice as much stock as one of ourmanual machines. It cuts much faster butthe main saving is in setting up themachine for the next job. The new CNCsaw can be programmed to cut asequence of up to 30 orders defined bypart length and number required. Themachine is then left to run with minimalattendance.
"The control knows the downfeedspeed and band speed to use to optimiseproductivity for each type of material andits cross section. Downfeed is slowedautomatically as the blade enters andleaves the material. The software evencalculates cycle time to complete the cut.
“Accuracy of cut is also better with theautomatic machine, as human error istaken out of the equation."■■
