In our quest to learn how we could improve our culture of challenge and student understanding of how to learn, we have examined the work of John Hattie, Douglas Fisher, Nancy Frey, Jo Boalar and other educational research, including James Anderson’s and Carol Dweck’s work on mindsets. One of the key areas we want to continue to grow and develop is ensuring every student at Maclean Public is provided with regular opportunities to be challenged in their learning. We are striving to further build the culture where productive struggle is welcomed, and our learners are comfortable with making mistakes and conquering challenging tasks. We want to help our students to develop the skills and mindset necessary to tackle complex tasks. To support our students, we introduced Learner Dispositions throughout the school at the beginning of Term 2. I shared these dispositions via a previous newsletter and would like to share them with you again at this time, in the hope that together we can continue to promote these learning behaviours in order for students to better understand the way they learn. How can I support my child at home? To support our work in school on developing a language of learning, we would encourage you to discuss learning at home. Here are some ideas of questions you might like to use at home: • What was the best thing that happened at school

today? • Tell me something that made you smile at

school. • Tell me about something you learned or

something you did. • Was there anything you found really tricky?

What strategies did you use to help you in your learning?

• Tell me one thing you learned at school today and I’ll tell you one thing I learned at work.

• What are you looking forward to at school tomorrow?

• Did you make any mistakes at school today? Tell me what you learned from them.

• What challenged you most today? • What was the nicest thing you did for someone

else today?

Kinder Orientation We are all looking forward to tomorrow’s kinder orientation day. Ms Sanders has an exciting day of activities planned. Please drop your child at the kindergarten room at 9:15am and you may collect them at the same spot between 3:00pm and 3:15pm.

Healthy Harold The Life Education van will be visiting our school on November 18, 19 and 20. All students received a permission note last week with session information. This year we have been able to take advantage of a 50% price reduction, which reduces the cost to $5 per child.

Book Fair Thanks for supporting our book fair this week. We were able to raise $393.58 to purchase books for our school.

Boat Safety We are very fortunate to live in such a beautiful part of the world, with such a vast waterway and as such it is very important that we are safety aware. Staff from the NSW Maritime Division will be visiting our school on Friday November 15 as part of the 'Clarence River School Boating Safety Awareness Week'. Students in years 4 - 6 will participate in a free boating safety presentation and activity session designed to reinforce the important boating safety message.

Student Leaders 2020 Maclean Public School has been very privileged to have such capable and passionate school leaders this year and we will be sad to see them leave. Year 5 students will have the opportunity to stand for the four leadership positions for 2020. It is important that our school leaders, lead with pride and set the example for all of our student body. Students will deliver a speech on Friday November 22 at the whole school assembly, after which all of the students will vote. Parents and carers are very welcome to attend. Presentation Assemblies Our year 6 Graduation assembly is on December 6 at 11.45am and our K-6 presentation will be held on December 13 at 11.45am. Everyone welcome, we would love to see you there.
