Surfing Australia High Performance Centre CampDuring Activities Week 2019 a group of aspiring, competitive surfing students from Maclean High School were lucky enough to have the opportunity to experience the life of an Olympic superstar.

The group attended a gruelling training camp at the Surfing Australia High Performance Centre which is the facility our Australian Olympic team will use in preparation for the inaugural entrance of surfing into the summer Olympics being held in Japan in August this year.

The students surfed early, then through video analysis of surfing technique, skills were evaluated with the support of a professional surfing coach. This was followed by a training regime utilising trampoline work, skateboards and ramps with the ability to safely engage in more technical aerial skills with the use of inflatable mats and foam pits. Then it was back to the ocean to employ the skills learnt and a final video to analyse improvements and skills identified as needing further work.

The discipline approach to these skills was enthusiastically embraced by our boys and after two days it was obvious everyone was enjoying the experience, gaining more confidence and an understanding of how to improve their surfing. Mr Ramsey, Miss Fisher and Mr Obst.

A great deal of time, effort and thought has gone into the process of student placement for the 2020 school year. Careful consideration was given to input from staff and families as well as student learning styles. Classrooms have been balanced academically and socially. Our class lists are structured to provide equitable class sizes at each year level. Moving students is difficult without causing imbalances and inequities.

All of our staff work hard to make school a positive experience for all students. Maclean High School is eagerly looking forward to enriching your student’s life. Thank you for understanding that it can take a few weeks for a student to adjust to a new year, peer group and teachers.

Thank you to all who are helping prepare for the new school year. Your commitment to ensuring that Maclean High School remains a celebrated and successful school is awe-inspiring. I eagerly look forward to greeting students and families again. It remains an honour and privilege to serve as your Principal. Together, I know we will make this school year one of growth and achievement for all students.

Parent involvement is a vital key to the education of students at school. We encourage parents to monitor student progress regularly. We send out progress reports and report cards throughout the year. Parents are welcome to set up appointments to meet and discuss the progress of their students.

The entire staff at Maclean High School is working towards the same goal to provide an opportunity for each student to succeed and to complete requirements for achievement. We welcome your suggestions and questions. Consider being a part of our school P&C, school canteen and participate in the exciting changes and further development of our program. Mr Greg Court, Principal.

The computer based test helps universities to select applicants with the most appropriate abilities and professional behaviours required for new doctors and dentists to be susccessful in their clinical careers. It is used in collaboration with other admissions processes such as interviews and academic qualifications. Not all universities use this test so you should check out specific courses more closely. Welcome Back to 2020Welcome back to returning students for 2020, and a warm welcome to all of our new students and their families. This year I will be Relieving Deputy Principal whilst Mrs Kelsey enjoys some leave. Please feel free to discuss any questions that you may have with me.

Some of you may know that I have moved up from the Head Teacher Special Education role, which Mrs Naomi Court is diligently fulfilling in my absence. I will be focussing on Literacy Development, working closely with Ms Hamilton, specifically looking at vocabulary and comprehension.

If you require access to Sentral Parent Portal, please let me know.

I look forward to meeting some of you at our Welcome to Year 7 Barbecue on Thursday, 13th February. I will try to add some helpful tips or literacy ideas in each of our newsletters.

Mrs Linda Martin, Relieving Deputy Principal.

TIP:Instead of asking your child how their day was (often to get a one-word reply - which tells you very little), try asking an open-ended question, such as “What did you learn today?”, “What was the best part of the day?” or “Who is your favourite teacher/staff member/helper/friend?”. Asky WHY? to hopefully get an extended answer.

Year 7 Welcome BBQYear 7 students and their families are invited to a “Getting to Know You” welcome barbecue on Thursday, 13th February from 5pm until 7pm.

This is an opportunity for you to meet the parents of other children in your child’s class, various staff and P&C representatives. The sausage sizzle will be held under the hanger. It would be helpful for catering purposes to RSVP by returning the note which is being sent home. We are looking forward to seeing as many of you as possible. Mrs Angela Dehnert, Year 7 Year Adviser.

Kayaking for Year 10 PASS ClassAt the end of 2019, students in the Year 10 Physical Activity and Sports Studies (PASS) class, participated in a 2 day kayaking expedition to Palmers Island.

Using kayaks from the school and implementing the skills they learnt throughout a term long outdoor education unit, students paddled from Maclean High School along the river to Palmers Island Fishing Haven Caravan Park and back again the following day.

The group focused on teamwork, navigation, environment, nutrition and camping skills to ensure the expedition was successful. Students commented on how lucky they were to have such amazing landscapes at their backdoor. The group would like to thank Matt and the team at Fishing Haven Caravan Park for accommodating the group overnight.
