The Holey Dollar story

In 1813 Governor LachlanMacquarie overcame an acutecurrency shortage by purchasingSpanish silver dollars, punchingout the centres and creating two

new coins - the Holey Dollar andthe Dump. This single move notonly doubled the number of coinsin circulation but increased theirtotal worth by 25 per cent andprevented the coins from leavingthe colony.
