Calculation of Site Response for the PSEG Site ESP 1. Objectives of analysis. Calculate amplification factors at the top of the Competent Layer, using as inputs the 1E-4, 1E-5, and 1E-6 High-Frequency (HF) and Low-Frequency (LF) motions (for 5% damping) and 60 artificial shear-wave velocity profiles, G/Gmax curves, and damping curves. 2. Inputs.

1. 1E-4, 1E-5, and 1E-6 HF and LF spectra (for 5% damping) and hazard de-aggregation results from Ref. 1.

2. Detailed de-aggregation results (M-R-epsilon graphs) from Refs. 10-12 3. Six sets of 60 artificial shear-wave velocity profiles, with associated G/Gmax curves,

and damping curves, from Ref. 2. 3. Literature search and background information. The application of RVT to site response has been studied by Schneider et al. (1991; Ref. 3), Stepp et al. (1991; Ref. 4), Silva et al. (1997; Ref. 5), and Rathje and Ozbey (2006; Ref. 6). The dynamic response of a layer of fill concrete may be treated in the same manner. 4. Assumptions and basis.

1. The assumption of vertically-propagating shear waves is appropriate for the characterization of site response at the PSEG Site. The basis is that this is the same procedure that is implemented in the SHAKE program and that constitutes the standard practice for site-response calculations.

2. The use of RVT for equivalent-linear site-response calculations yields valid results. The basis is the results in Refs. 3-6.

3. In the calculation of ground motion duration, values of crustal shear-wave velocity and seismic stress drop typical of Eastern North America will be used. The basis is that the site is located in this region.

5. Computer calculations: RVTSITE v.1.2 was used to perform all calculations. Calculations are performed separately for annual exceedence probabilities of 1E-4, 1E-5, and 1E-6. These inputs are specified as occurring on an “outcrop” of the bedrock material. Calculations are performed for the 60 artificial profiles developed in Ref. 2 for each FIRS location and profile. Other RVTSITE inputs not listed above are developed below.

The strong-motion durations are needed as inputs to RVTSITE. They are calculated from the mean magnitudes and distances from the de-aggregation using the following expressions from ground-motion RVT (see Ref. 6):

where β is the crustal shear-wave velocity (3.5 km/s) and σ∆ is the stress drop (120 bars). These values are typical of eastern US earthquakes. The intermediate steps and results from these calculations are tabulated below.

The table also contains the calculation of the effective strain ratio, which is calculated using the expression (M-1)/10 (Idriss and Sun, 1992; Ref. 7). Values greater than 0.65 were brought into the 0.5-0.65 range, which is the range recommended by Kramer (1996; Ref. 8). Input and Output Files, Graphical Results, and Discussion Ref. 9 contains the input files for RVTSITE, as well as the main output files (containing echo of inputs), and complete results. Key outputs from RVTSITE are in the form of csv files. These files are contained in sub-directories 1E-*_*. Figures 1 and 2 display the amplification factors in graphical form, as well as the associated logarithmic standard deviations. These results are contained in file Hope_CreekTabular_Results_GMRS*.xls). Graphical results in the form of amplification factors for all profiles, summary statistics of the amplification factors, and material properties vs. depth for all profiles are shown in Appendix A. 6.
