Lanzhou , covers 13,100 km2 , has a population of 2.89 million , once a significant city on the Silk Road , now a transportation center in Northwest , and also has a well-developed oil Refinery industry .

On the right is Yellow River , it passes across my city . As to Yellow River , it contains extraordinarily large amount of sand which outweighs that of any other rivers in the world .

That’s half water , half sand .

This is a typical topography of Yellow Plateau

Rain water rushes sand ,clay, which can’t be hold by land itself without plants’ ability of absorbing water, into rivers .

That’s why it became yellow .

Before the liberation of our country , there were no trees on the two mountain ranges ,however , after decades of hard work , now the two sides are covered with green .

The river bank was once the most dirty and smelly part , but now , it has turned out to be a resort area .

Before 1998 , duststorms only happened in some regular years , but now , it occurs frequently , especially in spring and winter , and the span has been increasing , our people have suffered a lot from the disaster directly.

In the past , every family had a stove to warm the house in winter , that had released a large amount of smoke and poisonous gas into atmosphere . Now , with the development of Central Heating System , family stoves have disappeared .

These two photos show the largest electricity plant whose hot water can be reused as the main resource by the Heating System .
