Make your vote count for God
Soon we will be given the oppor-
tunity to vote in the General
Election on 7th May. We all have
a responsibility to vote and to
pray for those in office in Parlia-
ment and those in Government. Amos, an Old
Testament prophet, gives us good meditation
material. He describes God giving a vision of
Himself holding a plumb line among his people
to see how they measure up against His stan-
dards. (Amos 7:7-8). A plum line is used by build-
ers to see how straight a wall is being built.
In Coventry Cathedral there is a sculpture of
Amos’ plum line over the city of Coventry de-
signed by Clarke Fitz-Gerald, which all MP candi-
dates and ourselves should see. It would help us
to measure up to his vision for living our lives in
an ethical, honest, transparent way and resolve
to serve others in a sincere way. Amos saw
much dishonesty and injustice in his society with
the wealthy “buying the poor for silver and the
needy for the price of a pair of shoes” (Amos
8:6). Amos hoped for a nation where justice
would “roll down as waters, and righteousness as
a mighty stream” (Amos 5:24) Amos has a great
deal to say of the judgment of God on a corrupt
nation but he ends on a very promising hopeful
prophecy of how “ruined cities can be rebuilt”
and people can live in them in an abundant
way with prosperity, “planting vineyards and
drinking their wine”, “making gardens and eat-
ing their fruit” (Amos 9:14), an image of the na-
tion blessed by God with justice and opportunity
for all, with a people happy and usefully em-
ployed, and the needs of the poor taken care
of. Let us pray for such blessings on our nation.

I have had the privilege of visiting the Church of the Ascension on the Mount of Olives. The guides pointed out to our party the “footmark of Jesus” imprinted in the stone, said to be left when Jesus was lifted up into heaven. But do we need such “evidence” to show Jesus was here on this earth and ascended into heaven? There is reliable evidence outside of the Bible in the early Roman writings that prove Jesus was crucified in Pontius Pilate’s jurisdiction but for the Christian believer proof is not necessary. Jesus says to the doubting disciple Thomas who had asked to put his finger into the nail wounds of Christ: “Because you have seen me you have believed. Blessed are those who have not seen and yet have believed.” (John 20:29). We also have proof of the Resurrection in the changed lives of the believers. But the Ascen-sion of Jesus into heaven is something that cannot be proved. It requires a leap of faith on our part to believe what the apostles say happened – that He was taken up before their eyes and a cloud hid Him from sight (Acts 1:9). The cloud is the Shekinah glory of the presence of God that the Israelites experienced in the exodus from Egypt (Exodus 14:19). The Ascension marks the transition of the resurrected Jesus, no longer confined to one spot, to the glory of heaven where He reigns as King and can be everywhere in Spirit. This means Jesus can be always with us where we are and we can always be with Him where He is in heaven, where He hears and answers our prayers and where He continually prays for us, and sends the Holy Spirit to strengthen us to live for Him. Graham Gittings Christ’s Ascension into heaven is noted within Acts as being 40 days after His Resurrection, and is therefore celebrated on the 6th Thursday of Easter, this year falling on Thursday 14th May.
After his suffering, he presented himself to them and gave many convincing proofs that he was
alive. He appeared to them over a period of forty days and spoke about the kingdom of God.
On one occasion, while he was eating with them, he gave them this command: “Do not leave
Jerusalem, but wait for the gift my Father promised, which you have heard me speak about. For
John baptized with water, but in a few days you will be baptized with the Holy Spirit.”
Then they gathered around him and asked him, “Lord, are you at this time going to restore the
kingdom to Israel?”
He said to them: “It is not for you to know the times or dates the Father has set by his own author-
ity. But you will receive power when the Holy Spirit comes on you; and you will be my witnesses in
Jerusalem, and in all Judea and Samaria, and to the ends of the earth.”
After he said this, he was taken up before their very eyes, and a cloud hid him from their sight.
They were looking intently up into the sky as he was going, when suddenly two men dressed in
white stood beside them. “Men of Galilee,” they said, “why do you stand here looking into the
sky? This same Jesus, who has been taken from you into heaven, will come back in the same way
you have seen him go into heaven.”

Memories from John Harp as PCC Member
With many thanks to John who has served as PCC member
for fifty-three years, from 1961 to 2014
I thought it may be useful to put down a few thoughts and memories of my 50 years as a
PCC member.
Elected in April 1961, the Parish had three Churches, St. Peter’s, St. Andrew’s, Meir Hay,
and St. Philip’s, Werrington.
On the advice of the Archdeacon, Venerable Percy Harthill (Mintons), Werrington was
made into a separate administrative district with its own PCC, Churchwardens etc., but
still within the Parish. PCC members could still attend either PCC.
The incumbent was Reverend Victor Yates, the Parish had three readers and a Curate.
The major mission project was Pinewood. Pinewood, where a lot of houses had been
built, a plot of land had been put aside for a Church.
Christian Stewardship had been introduced with the decline in income from the Church
Commissioners.
Sadly, Victor Yates was in poor health and died in 1966 of kidney failure.
At this point, I was elected Chairman of the PCC at the age of 24, quite a task.
In 1967, the property which is now St. Andrew’s came on the market and the PCC re-
solved to buy it.
We had funds of £400 set aside for Pinewood, sadly it was decided to switch these to
Weston Coyney because of a rapid growth in housing.
Patrick Yowell arrived as incumbent and, with the sale of the Curate’s house and help
from Lichfield Diocese, we were able to buy the site and build St. Peter’s Centre.
Malcolm Sowden was Curate at the time and agreed to live in the semi-derelict house
on the site.
The Centre at Weston Coyney has a Chapel, which was furnished by Trentham Parish.
In 1968, I was seconded to the Christian Stewardship department at Lichfield. I did this
work for 15 years, during which, with a small team, we created 22,000 Covenants across
the Diocese. The rest of my time was taking part in Parish activities with particular interest
in schools.
Being a believer is a great gift from God. I found Christianity adds a richness to life.
Standing up and saying what we believe can be a great help to others.
John Harp

Prayer to Love Neighbour as Yourself
Hear our prayers, O Lord, and consider our desires. Give unto us true humility, a meek and quiet spirit, a loving and a friendly, a holy and a useful manner of life; bearing the burdens of our neighbours, denying ourselves, and studying to benefit others, and to please Thee in all things. Grant us to be righteous in performing promises, loving to our relatives, careful of our charges, slow to anger, and readily prepared for every good work. Amen. (Jeremy Taylor, 1613-1667)

Dearly Beloved, All that that the Messiah suffered was for you! There was a great exchange made for you. Isaiah 53:4-6 says, “Yet it was our grief he bore, our sorrows that weighed him down. And we thought his troubles were a punishment from God, for his own sins! But he was wounded and bruised for our sins. He was beaten that we might have peace; he was lashed-and we were healed! We - every one of us - have strayed away like sheep! We, who left God's paths to follow our own. Yet God laid on him the guilt and sins of every one of us!” (The Living Bible). Listed here are some of the major exchanges Jesus made for us that we may enjoy. 1. Jesus was punished that we might be forgiven (Isaiah 53: 4-5, Ephesians 4:32, Colos-
sians 2:13). 2. Jesus was wounded that we might be healed (Isaiah 53:4-5, Matthew 8:16-17, 1 Peter
2:24). 3. Jesus was made sin with our sinfulness that we might be made righteous with His
righteousness (Isaiah 53:10, 2 Corinthians 5:21 'the righteousness of God'). Right-eousness means to be in good standing with God (Romans 3:22, Romans 4:6, Romans 10:10).
4. Jesus died our death that we might share His life. (Romans 6:23, Hebrews 2:9, John
8:52). 5. Jesus was made a curse that we might receive His blessing (Galatians 3:13-14, Deuter-
onomy 21:22-23, Deuteronomy 28:1-13). 6. Jesus endured our poverty that we might receive His provision (2 Corinthians 8:9 and
9:8). 7. Jesus bore our shame that we might share His glory (Matthew 27:35-36). Hebrews
2:10 says that Jesus brings many sons to glory. 8. Jesus endured our rejection that we might have His acceptance with the Father
(Matthew 27:45-51). The Father hid His face from Jesus and rejected Him for us. Ephesians 1:6 says we are accepted by the Father.
9. Jesus was cut off from the Father by death that we might enjoy God’s presence eter-
PAGE 11 CAVERSWALL, DILHORNE & WESTON COYNEY POS T
nally (Matthew 27:46, Isaiah 53:8, Hebrews 10:21-22, Jude 24, Colossians 1:27, Ephe-sians 3:16-20).
10. Our old man (sin nature) was put to death in Him, that the new man (Christ’s nature)
might come to life in us (Romans 6:6, Galatians 2:20). 11. Jesus experienced our sorrows and bore our griefs that we might have gladness and
joy (Isaiah 53, Isaiah 35:10, Isaiah 51:11). 12. Jesus kept the law for us so that we could live by His grace (Romans 7:6 and 8:1-4,
Ephesians 2:8-9, Galatians 3:1-3). 13. Jesus was tormented that we might enjoy peace (Isaiah 53:5, Philippians 4:7). 14. Jesus was made insignificant that we might have significance. He was sold for the
price of a slave (Matthew 26:15, 1 Peter 1:18-19). The price God paid for us makes us significant.
15. Evil was conquered. Jesus (appeared to have) suffered defeat by evil that we might
enjoy victory over evil. The crucifixion was absolute. It disarmed and defeated Satan. Colossians 2:13-15 says, “When you were stuck in your old sin-dead life, you were incapable of responding to God. God brought you alive - right along with Christ! Think of it! All sins forgiven, the slate wiped clean, that old arrest warrant cancelled and nailed to Christ's Cross. He stripped all the spiritual tyrants in the universe of their sham authority at the Cross and marched them naked through the streets.” (The Message) Praise the Lord! Hallelujah! So have a wonderful resurrection celebration in the love of Christ, George, Joyce, Amen and Chrioni Irwin Please continue to keep Pastor George, Joyce, his family and their ministries in your prayers.
‘ By His power God raised the Lord from the dead, and He will raise us also ’.

Pray for Two Christians Caught Carrying Bibles - Algeria On March 16, a 33-year-old pastor and a fellow church member in Tiaret, Algeria, were arrested after being caught transporting Bibles and Christian books. The two were interrogated for several hours be-fore police submitted their report to the general prosecutor for fur-ther processing. While charges have not yet been filed, the Christians are expected to be charged with proselytizing and transporting Christian materials without permission. Pray for the two men as they await word on possible charges. Pray for Iraqi Refugee Families in Jordan - Jordan Many Iraqis were forced to leave everything behind when Islamic State militants over-ran their cities. VOM is providing Iraqi refugees in Jordan with food and household ne-cessities like mattresses, pillows, blankets, carpets, fireplaces and cookers. A VOM partner has asked that we pray for the refugee children who cannot attend school. Pray for Christian University Students Attacked by al-Shabab - Kenya Four gunmen from the Islamist group al-Shabab stormed Garissa University on April 2, killing at least 148 people. The militants forced their way into the university in the early morning hours with the intention of holding Christians hostage. A student who escaped the attack said he could hear the militants opening doors, asking students if they were Muslim or Christian and immediately shooting those who replied that they were Christian. The four militants were killed by police more than 15 hours after the attack began. Pray for Mariam, Abandoned by Husband - Cote d'Ivoire A Christian woman in Cote d'Ivoire was expelled from her home by her Muslim hus-band because she refused to renounce her Christian faith. Mariam, who is pregnant and due to give birth soon, is being cared for by church members. When she became a Christian, in 2012, her Muslim family attacked her and she was forced to live on the streets. Pray for Christians Harassed by Local Authorities – Laos On March 18, local authorities shut down a large evangelical event being held at a soc-cer field. The Gospel Music Festival, hosted by the Lao Evangelical Church (LEC), at-tracted pastors from all 16 of the country’s provinces, as well as pastors and musicians from outside Laos. Although the event had been approved by the central government, local police shut down the event, citing the "illegal" presence of foreign musicians and pastors. The festival was temporarily allowed to continue indoors at a nearby church, but police later arrived in two trucks and attempted to arrest the pastor who was speaking. The event was immediately cancelled. The Lao government has since apolo-gized for police interference and has invited the LEC to reschedule the event.
