Purpose of the film magazine?• The purpose of a film magazine is to promote films which are

yet to be released and ones that already exist that are being show in cinemas or on DVD.

• It targets the people who are interested in film, whether in industry or not.

• They inform viewers about the film processes, (pre-production, production and post-production).

• As a part of the marketing process of films, they're used to market and promote the film before its release date.

• They include key features which release to the genre of the film and gain special offers and prizes.

How are magazine covers attractive to the audience?

• Magazine covers attract the audience as they give more insight about the film. This is done through, facts, interviews, reviews, exclusive details from behind the scenes e.g photos.

• For example, magazines targeted for males usually have attractive female models or muscular male models, as they are often admired (e.g GQ, Men’sHealth)

• The majority of magazines that are targeted for a female audience are focused on certain products such as cosmetics and fashion(e.g ELLE, VOGUE).

• The attraction differs depending on the theme of the magazine, film magazines utilise the main character to encourage the fan base for that particular character and/or actor.

Conventions of a magazine

Page 11: Magazine cover research

Main ImageThe main image varies from close up, mid and long shots depending on the style and theme of the magazine.

The main image is also usually of the feature article as it entices the audience and helps it sell.

The shot on this beauty magazine cover is close up in order to draw attention to the woman's makeup and hair.

This shot on this cover is a mid shot, this shot is used so that the audience can see the characters costume and the props.

Mast HeadThe mast head is usually a different font so it recognisable and the audience is able to establish a difference between the magazines.

It also stands out from the rest of the taglines and features on the front cover (font is bigger).

It is used to establish what the magazine is about. For example, ‘Billboard’ is distinguishable as a music magazine and ‘Vogue’ is identified as a fashion magazine.

Feature Article

The feature article is usually based on the main image of the magazine, the main image is usually a picture of who the article is about.

Cover Lines

The cover lines on the front page indicate others articles which will be features inside of the magazine itself.

This makes it easy to establish why customers should buy the magazine if it is of interest to them.

Colour Palette

The mast head is usually a different colour to the rest text to stand out.

The colour palette on the cover magazine is usually consistent, and is only two or three different colours.

Similarities and differences between magazines?

• The majority of magazines have the same conventions, they use the main character/person that the feature is about as the main image on the cover.

• A difference is that in some case, some films use the ‘direct gaze’ (person looking straight at camera)while others don’t, this is dependent on the genre or theme of the magazine.

• There is always a barcode, date and price on the magazines but they are often arranged differently.

• The colour palette is similar as all magazines use a variety of colours but use a different combination of them according to the genre or theme.

• Another difference if the taglines as some magazines such as ‘Gossip Magazine’ have a lot of text and features on the front cover to attract a variety of audiences whilst others can have 2 of the features.

What do some magazine covers prioritise?

• Three things that magazine covers prioritise are:• The title- which is bold and identifiable for loyal consumers.• Name of the feature they are promoting-so the audience are

able to recognise what the magazine is about, whether fashion or film.

• The image on the front cover- the main selling strategy of selling the magazine and attracting the audience.
