A Gulfstream III repossessed by CIT

Group Financial Services recently

underwent a major overhaul at

Jet Aviation’s West Palm Beach facility.

The aircraft – stored at Executive

Airport in Fort Lauderdale for almost

two years was stripped of its interior,

covered with mold and was not even

airworthy. “The aircraft was found

completely gutted with the exception of the cockpit

and the baggage compartment,” said Kurt Thompson,

special projects coordinator at Jet Aviation West

Palm Beach. “It was also revealed through our initial

log book research that the aircraft had not been

flown in nearly two years.”

Thompson, Senior Crew Chief Kenneth White and

Technician Hamsa Paranhos performed a thorough

inspection. “After a few repairs and once we were

confident that the aircraft was airworthy, an FAA

Designated Airframe Representative (DER) was called

to authorize a one-time ferry flight to Jet Aviation

West Palm Beach,” reported Thompson. “The landing

gear was secured in the down position and the aircraft

flown under Visual Flight Rules (VFR) to our facility.”

The aircraft then underwent month and landing

inspections, hour items and the APU was overhauled.

Over 100 X-rays were performed on the aircraft, and

over 200 discrepancies were corrected. The landing

gear was removed and replaced with overhauled

units, and the aircraft interior was reinstalled. In total,

the project represented 4,000 hours of work. The aircraft

has since been flown, and is scheduled for a complete

exterior paint job.

“The crew that worked on

the project completed

this job ahead of schedule

and under budget,” noted

Thompson.

A new airborne TV system,

designed for multi-region

satellite reception was

recently installed into a BBJ

aircraft by Jet Aviation

Basel in conjunction with

Jet Aviation Engineering

Services (JAES). The Collins Tailwind 550 Airborne

TV System was developed by Airshow, a division

of Rockwell Collins who was the first company

to perfect this technology.

“The new satellite multi-region TV system represents

a significant breakthrough in airborne TV and we are

pleased to offer our customers the new installation

into multiple types of aircraft such as Airbus, BBJ,

Gulfstream, Falcon and Hawker aircraft.” says

Rainer Albecker, vice president and general manager

of Jet Aviation Basel. “What customers appreciate

most about this system is the consistent and reliable

reception and smooth transitions from one

geographic service provider to the next. Especially

in the Middle East where until recently, satellite

reception was difficult to achieve,” Rainer Albecker adds.

The heart of the system is a large

rotating antenna atop the aircraft

covered by a dome. The installation of

such a large mass item on the

exterior of the aircraft must meet

stringent certification and engineering

requirements. Because this was a major

modification and the first installation

of its type, JAES worked closely with the local

FAA office and the Seattle FAA Director. “We’ve

already begun the engineering portion to install the

same unit in another customer’s wide-bodied

aircraft,” said Michael Girps, general manager of

Jet Aviation Engineering Services. “Installation for that

aircraft should be completed by the end of the year.”

Seating for 44 passengers

The BBJ seats up to 44 passengers and 5

crewmembers, has a first-class section, forward

and aft club seating and a forward lounge with

two berthable three-person fabric divans.

Sophisticated cabin management and entertainment

systems equipment topped off the completion

and includes a six-channel SATCOM complete

with an Airshow 400. The lounge and the

forward and aft club seating areas were equipped

with large monitors in each section and smaller

drop-down and wall monitors were installed in

the first-class section.

“To complete the aircraft on time – within a

10-month time frame – we began the preparation

and production stages simultaneously,” said Rainer

Albecker, general manager of Jet Aviation Basel.

Another project recently completed at Jet Aviation’s

Basel facility was an A319 Corporate Jetliner –

the sixth Airbus completed by the facility within

the last three years. A special feature of this

head-of-state aircraft is the bulletproof cockpit

door, strengthened with stainless steel.

The head-of-state aircraft seats up to 38 passengers

and houses an executive seating

area, office, adjoining private

bathroom, conference room,

business class seating, crew rest

compartment and forward and aft

galleys and lavatories. The project

also included a full exterior paint

job. State-of-the-art entertainment

and communications systems were

installed along with an aircraft

wide LAN system – connected to

a high-speed data transfer unit – the

first unit ever to be installed in an

A319 Corporate Jetliner allowing

in-flight e-mail and internet

communication for passengers.

Page 10: MAGAZINE - Jet Aviation · VIP airliner style. The completion included a full exterior paint job and application of the customer’s specialized corporate logo at the Basel facility’s

As the safety and security of passengers continues

to be an issue and further terror threats are all but

imminent – the installation of automated antimissile

defense systems is not far from a real consideration

for aircraft owners and operators.

The threat of surface-to-air missiles (SAMs), also

known as Man Portable Air Defense Systems

(MANPADs), has existed for many years.

However, extensive publicity has sparked new

concern after the FBI foiled a plot by an alleged

arms dealer to smuggle SAMs into the U.S. for

use against civilian airliners and private aircraft.

As an added precaution aircraft operators are

beginning to seriously explore the possibility of

adding this technology to their aircraft. “We have

been approached by operators of VIP and

head-of-state aircraft, as well as system providers

to help determine the feasibility of installing and

certifying missile defense systems,” says Michael

Girps, general manager of Jet Aviation

Engineering Services. The various systems, often

referred to as IRCMs, infrared counter-measures,

use sensors to detect the launch or flight of a

missile. A processor then evaluates the sensor’s

signal to determine whether the object is a threat.

Depending on the type of system, it either

generates a heat signature that diverts the missile

away from the aircraft or a laser beam that jams

the missile's guidance system – causing it to veer

of course.

According to Girps, once the engineering portion

has been certified, the system can be installed at

any one of Jet Aviation’s heavy maintenance

facilities – worldwide. “Currently, we are in

negotiations with several aircraft owners who

have expressed an interest in acquiring an IRCM

system,” Girps added.

The first large display Electronic Flight

Instrument System (EFIS) was recently installed by

Jet Aviation into a classic B747 at its Basel facility,

using high-resolution, wide viewing angle 6” x 8”

Active Matrix Liquid Crystal Displays (AMLCDs).

The EFIS, manufactured by Astronautics

Corporation of America, replaced the aircraft’s

electro-mechanical flight instruments and now

provides B747-400 functionality of primary flight

and navigation. The displays, accepting digital

and existing synchro and analog inputs, are

capable of receiving and processing FMS,

INAS/ADIRU, TCAS, TAWS/EGPWS, navigation

radios, Air Data, Radio Altimeter Systems, weather,

traffic, terrain and other systems.

Minimum aircraft downtime

“It is the first time that a classic B747 has been

equipped with such state-of-the-art avionics

equipment,” said Rainer Albecker, vice president

and general manager of Jet Aviation Basel, “The

development of this highly sophisticated avionics

package allows us to now offer our customers the

installation of an EFIS into their aircraft with

minimum downtime to the aircraft – about four to

six weeks.”

The research portion of the project lasted nearly

one full year and involved almost 50,000 hours of

engineering. Together with JRG Design Inc.

(USA), Jet Aviation Basel designed, engineered

and certified the EFIS integration and more than

300 interfaces under multiple Supplemental Type

Certificates (STCs). The company performed

major design and systems engineering in close

cooperation with the FAA and delivered all

requirements for the avionics to the system’s

manufacturer. The EFIS has four electronic flight

instrument displays, control panels, a hardware kit

and software. Extensive ground and flight testing

was required prior to certification by JRG Design

Inc. and the FAA.

In addition, Jet Aviation Basel performed major

avionics upgrades, including new HF transceivers,

Teledyne ACARS and an Airborne Data Loader.

Also installed were new air data computers, a

triple FMS and an EGWPS. Technicians completed

the project with a D-check. “These new cockpit

features and upgrades are value-added and will

provide the aircraft a higher resale assessment,”

said Albecker.

Dallas, TX, and Teterboro, NJ were

recently named Exxon Mobil Premier

Spirit award winners. Of the 750 fixed

base operations (FBO) considered –

Jet Aviation Bedford and Jet Aviation

Teterboro were among the top with a

gold rating.

“The Premier Spirit program is highly

competitive and extremely beneficial as it

challenges Exxon Mobil Aviation-branded

FBOs to deliver the highest caliber

customer care in the general aviation

industry,” said Melissa Lenkerd, business

development manager, Exxon Mobil

Aviation. “Winners like Jet Aviation have

earned the utmost respect and praise from

the people we value most – our customers.”

The Premier Spirit program – which is in

its 14th year, asks customers to rate FBOs

in four categories: customer service,

image, quality control and business

performance. Winners are determined by

outstanding customer service delivery as

rated in all four categories. This year,

nearly 25,000 surveys were completed.

Better days may be ahead for the aircraft market,

if a rejuvenated stock market and upbeat earnings

announcements are any indication, “Activity is up

and some market segments are improving,” said

Walt Wakefield, vice president of aircraft sales

at Jet Aviation. “These factors combined with

attractive values and low interest rates are making

a very compelling case for buyers to move off

the sidelines.”

Pricing in the pre-owned market which has

declined since the summer of 1998 appears to

have finally stabilized – as interest rates continue

to be historically low. Currently, older aircraft

are 30-40% below peak values and newer aircraft

are 15-25% off peak values. New tax incentives

in the form of a 50% bonus depreciation on the

purchase price for new aircraft and capital

expenditures made on pre-owned aircraft are also

stimulating demand.

Pointing out that interest in corporate aircraft

ownership has never been higher, Wakefield

believes there is more upside potential today for

price appreciation than in the wake of the last

economic downturn. “Corporate aircraft ownership

today – is viewed as a necessary business tool,”

said Wakefield, “and the difficulties in airline

travel and security concerns are likely to stimulate

even more demand in the future.”

current fractional aircraft owners – they are upgrading

to full ownership. “Some of it is related to the

new tax laws,” said Bruce McNeely, head

of Jet Aviation’s U.S. management division,

acknowledging that aircraft values are at an all-time

low. “The recent tax law allows owners to take a

deduction equal to 50% of the adjusted basis in the

year that the aircraft is first placed in service.

Others are simply starting to grow their businesses,

and are flying more, in either case, whole aircraft

ownership simply makes better business sense for the

fractional aircraft owner.”

The recent additions

in the U.S. include a

Canadair Challenger

based in Boston, MA; a

Gulfstream IV-SP and

Gulfstream V-SP, both

based in White Plains,

NY; a Gulfstream III based

in Chicago, IL; a Falcon

900EX based in Denver,

CO; and two Global

Express aircraft, one based

in Hagerstown, MD, and

another in Teterboro, NJ.

According to Jürg Reuthinger, vice president of

Jet Aviation’s aircraft management division in

Europe, the Middle and Far East, the story is

much the same. “Due to the latest signs of

recovery of the worldwide economy, we have

received several requests for quotes on aircraft

management contracts and the outlook for the

next few months is promising. We recently

signed a contract that added a Boeing 727 and a

Global Express to our managed fleet and we

are strengthening our ties to our U.S. aircraft

management division – to create synergies.”

Commercial airline passengers had few alternatives

during the recent Northeast blackout when their

flights were cancelled. However, an aviation

executive – originally scheduled on a flight out of

LaGuardia Airport in New York City – contacted

Jet Aviation on August 14th at 7 p.m. with an

urgent request to be in South America for an

important business meeting the following morning.

Jet Aviation’s charter team swung into action and

arranged for chartered aircraft and crew members

to standby to perform the 9-hour flight. With most

bridges closed and traffic at a veritable standstill,

the passenger finally arrived at Jet Aviation’s

Teterboro FBO at 1 a.m. to board the aircraft.

In another request, Jet Aviation’s Private Fleet

Sikorsky helicopter was scheduled to pick up a

Wall Street executive at the 34th Street helipad.

The passenger requested that several colleagues –

stranded in the city accompany him to the

White Plains airport. Due to the extraordinary

circumstances, the helicopter and pilot remained

on standby to assist throughout the night and

into the following day – just another example

of Jet Aviation’s outstanding commitment to

customer service.

CHARTER

Jet Aviation is now using its Falcon 50

charter aircraft to perform flights to and from

Lugano, Switzerland and London City

Airport. The topographical situation of both

airports requires steep approaches and both

are rated as special airports; in addition, the

London City Airport is characterized by a

short runway.

Aircraft landing at these airports must be

certified for steep approaches by the aircraft

manufacturer and pilots undergo special training.

Jet Aviation provides its Falcon 50 flight crews

with specialized training including additional

theory, special technique for steep approaches

and simulator training. For Lugano Airport

landings, pilots attend practical flight training

at the airport prior to receiving the license

extension. According to Martin Bernegger,

vice president and general manager aircraft charter

for Jet Aviation Europe, the Middle and Far

East, “The location of both airports is of strategic

importance. Lugano is a popular gateway for

the north Italian market, while the London City

Airport is significant to business customers.”

Bedford - Jet Aviation’s facility in

Bedford, Massachusetts recently

underwent successful DCA and JAA

inspections – which took a full day

to complete as all aspects of the

facilities repair station were audited.

“A JAA or DCA base inspection is

very thorough,” said Gerald Maney,

chief inspector at Jet Aviation

Bedford, pointing out that JAA is

currently in transition to the European

Aviation Safety Agency (EASA).

“There is no sacrifice of safety and

airworthiness when you are under

their guidance.”
