Civil Engineering faculty, Missouri Asphalt Pavement Association (MAPA) Endowed Professor.

Research, industry and teaching experiences are in the area of infrastructure sustainability with applications in

pavement design, materials, and performance. Focus is on the interdisciplinarity aspects of infrastructure

sustainability; making civil engineering more fundamental and more scientific. Integrating research into

educational programs. National and international recognition. Service in national committees on

construction/pavement areas. An expert in asphalt modifications including the use of recycled modifiers in

The NSF CAREER award has provided support to develop new courses and to restructure other courses to

include infrastructure sustainability components in the civil engineering curriculum. Developed the

following courses at NDSU:

• CE499/696 Infrastructure Sustainability and Recycling (2012). Elective/graduate level course on

material recycling as an aspect of infrastructure sustainability. Updated as CE4001 Infrastructure

Sustainability through Recycling at Missouri S&T.

• CE793 Modeling Recycled Base Layer (2012). Advanced graduate-level course on modeling base

layer in a flexible pavement system with a focus on the use of recycled materials in the base layer.

• ENGR291 Introduction to World-class Engineering (2013-2014, co-developer). First Year

Engineering Experience pilot program.

• CE757 Pavement Evaluation and Rehabilitation (2009). Training in management skills and

advanced engineering tools. Updated as CE6001 Pavement management and Rehabilitation at

Missouri S&T.

• CE458/658 Bituminous Materials and Mixtures (2005). Training on advanced testing protocols

and hands-on-experience with state-of-the-practice techniques in asphalt testing. Updated as CE5112

Bituminous Materials at Missouri S&T.

Restructured the following Courses at NDSU:

• CE419/619 Pavement Design (2013). Emphasis on the use of engineering fundamentals and

theoretical approaches in pavement design and analysis.

• CE303/L Civil Engineering Materials and Lab (2012). The course links material properties to

infrastructure applications.

• CE457 Pavement Management Systems (2006). Management tools, such as Life-Cycle-Cost

analysis, and communication tools, such as report preparations, and state-of-the-art software

training.

Updated Lab Facilities-NDSU

• Developed new Superpave lab that is equipped with state-of-the-art equipment for both educational and

research applications. Added new capabilities for testing and characterizing base materials for research and

graduate courses.

Co-curricular Advising/Student Leadership

• Advisor of the American Society of Civil Engineers (ASCE) Student Chapter (2005-2014). During

my tenure as advisor, the team has won three national championships.

Interaction with Asphalt and its Effect on Final Properties. Dr. Ghavibazoo is currently a research

Behavior of Reclaimed Asphalt Pavement as Base Layer. Dr. Attia is currently an Assistant
